Elf on a Shelf?

I've only heard about this recently, is this really a Christmas fad?

Elf on a Shelf?

Kids have enough magical paranoia about Santa, is it really beneficial to introduce some creepy puppet into their lives?

And how do you explain both characters? If you reveal Elf on the Shelf to your child, will your kid still fall for the whole Santa racket?

It's worse than creepy - as I understand it, the Elf on the Shelf is nothing less than a snitch. Strange thing to raise your child thinking this is normal.
