Ancient Riverbed on Mars
Posted by: Ito ()

NASA’s Curiosity rover has found evidence that the area in Gale crater it is traveling through once had vigorously flowing water for perhaps thousands or millions of years. Scientists don’t know exactly how long ago this river would have flowed but it would likely be billions of years in the past.

We are many. We are one. We are the Praelanthor. You know us as the Soul Cube. Free us from our eternal prison, and we will help you. Vanquish our enemies and we grow stronger. Listen for our call, and then free us, to strike down the evil.

Destroying evil gives us life, and makes us stronger. Unleash us when you hear our call. We will pass the lifeforce of those we slay to you.

We foresee a great battle. The outcome is not clear. We are the only way to destroy Hell's mightiest warrior.

How deep can Curiosity dig? Seems it would have dig fairly deep to find fossils or bones or bacteria.

Nevertheless, this is great news.

It boggles my mind to be able to look at incredibly detailed pictures of the surface of another planet. Simply amazing.

We haven't finished trashing the moon.
Focus, Focus
But great pictures if you like rocks.

I'm not buying it yet.

Different atmospheres can provide different rates of erosion by wind. I think NASA is being a bit hasty. They're trying to find water instead of objectively looking at the planet.

Probably the medias fault, still incredibly amazing.

Republicans and their crap about American exceptionalism. They must be talking about their own lack of skill.

Me thinks if you can land a piece of trash( already outdated tech) on a planet a couple miles from earth, then you might know a thing or two about rocks.
Besides you already bought it.

When I saw the first article about this, I scratched my head looking at the image and said "How did they come to THAT conclusion!?"

It turns out they came to that conclusion because the image is of (1) sedimentary rock and (2) the pebble size and shape inside the layers of the sedimentary rock gives the "experts" information about BOTH depth and flow speed of what shaped the pebbles!

Guess ya gotta REALLY be into rocks to know such things a priori...

Science is cool.

+1 to this!

I read all the John Carter of Mars books as a kid. Its a shame the movie was such a piece of crap.

I'm ecstatic that billions of my tax monies are being spent so wisely. That money certainly couldnt be better spent trying to improve the planet we actually live on.

Let yourself dream a little. The problems on this planet won't go away any time soon.

You read about how they're looking for planets like earth (or, more probably, were or will be like earth) to find life. They keep saying how perfect earth is.

But Earth is perfect for life because life evolved to exploit Earth. So all this Earth like talk is well and good for finding planets for us to exploit. I kind of figure life can spring up and evolve in a massive range of conditions.

Amazing how many rules we use to describe Our reality, break down in space or on other planets, but evolution may be a universal constant.

You are right, we dont even have the funds to keep open or maintain our National park system, our wise leaders are too busy shoveling greenbacks to Nasa, defense contractors, Iraq and Afghanistan. You know all the folks who are sooo appreciative and give so much back to us.

The entire NASA budget is 0.48% of Federal spending. It is one of the few things that you can point to that actually produces something tangible.

The only thing I guess you could say was tangible is that we beat the Russians to the moon, again if that is tangible, oh ya and Tang.

I'd agree. In contrast to, at least as stated in the article, wind certainly can move rocks much larger than those shown and you find similar wind and vibration-based fan-type traces on Earth.

Big-ass rock moved by wind:

The mechanics:

Saltation-mechanics.gif

Hey, whaddaya know... a big-ass rock moved by wind with a bunch of smaller pebbles around it just like in the article:

500px-Bradley_1930_dreikanter.jpg

I'm sure at least somebody at NASA knows that since the first picture is from their own planetary sciences program.

Here is a video that explains why NASA believes the stones were part of a water system.
