Upscale shopping came to a halt in Fairfax County on Thursday when power went out at Tysons Galleria and some of the surrounding area.

“So many hot trends here that we blew a fuse!” the mall’s Facebook page mused.

About 4 p.m., 109 customers in the area lost power because of an “underground equipment failure,” said Dan Genest, a Dominion Virginia Power spokesman.

He said he was not sure what caused the failure.

The company rerouted power around the equipment and restored electricity to most of its customers in about 30 minutes, Genest said. But about three dozen customers were still without power about 6 p.m., he said.

Although many stores closed because of the outage, some stayed open and customers lingered, said Aba Kwawu, a mall spokesperson. Those looking for dinner were probably turned away — the side of the building with restaurants was dark, Kwawu said.

Dominion told mall officials that power would be fully restored between 7 and 9 p.m.
