Where can I buy guns around Fairfax?
Posted by: Bender ()
Date: March 18, 2008 10:34PM

Yeah Im looking to invest in a nice Glock before this worthless dollar loses all its value. Im a first time buyer, so Im clueless. Where would I find a gun shop in the NOVA area? And am I required to get any special licenses or anything?

planning on shooting up a university campus?

or "defending yourself". face it, you dont NEED a gun to defend yourself, there ARE alternatives you know.

its kind of hard to find a shop here but i'm sure theres some somewhere, perhaps it'll be easier to find such shops in West Virginia or some more *cough*"redneck"*cough* suited area....

Shooters Paradise in Lake Ridge. Get on 123 and keep driving until you get bored and there it is.

Shooters paradise is no more. I recommend that everyone arm themselves. Reckoning day will be here soon.

Unless you are in a hurry or have extra cash wait for the next gun show at Dulles. Might save you up to $100. Pay cash instead of a check or credit card and save even more.

BTW if you have never handled a semi auto better take lessons. Too many fools have accidential discharges by forgetting the round in the chamber. Removing the magazine still leaves one live round ready to go unless you clear it.

I say a gun show is your best bet....or Virginia Arms in Manassas...they're pretty good. Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly is way overpriced IMO.

Virginia Arms, Manassas is good.

Gilbert Small Arms, Terminal Rd. in Lorton near the I95 interchange with FFx Co Parkway is another, and it has an indoor range. Their website has directions.

Also, in the same industrial park as Gilbert's is 10-8 Duty Gear, which carries pistols, but they cater mainly to cops and don't have a range.

There used to be two gun shops in Old Towne, but I think they are both gone. I know one of them, Potomac Arms, I think it was called, is gone.

You could also wait for the next gun show, but it's nicer to have a local dealer so that you take it right back if you have problems, and gun show dealers generally don't give great deals, especially at the Dulles show, which is usually packed. Gun shows are great for accesories, though. Once you get the pistol you like, go to a gun show, cash in pocket, and try out several holsters to find one that really fits best, and shop around.

Other thing you can do, if you don't mind a little driving, is take a trip down to Gander Mountain sporting goods down around Fredericksburg, somewhere. You can google it.

In this area Virginia Arms in Manzssas is very highly regarded, they have probably the best selection in this area and I was pleasesd after dealing with them. You can also go the internet route if you prefer, some cheaper guns will be found that way. By law they have to ship to a FFL who then runs a check on you and does the paperwork then you pay a transfer fee. If you are interested PM me, I can point you in the direction of FFLs and websites I have used in the past. Most gun shops will also have an FFL. I know Virginia Arms does and I believe Gilberts does as well. The transfer fee is usually 25-30 bucks and two bucks for the state background check.

Nope, just running it through a state police database, hopefully not offshore.

Look in the yellow pages under "Guns". There are no special licenses needed
as we live in the great state of Virginia. Training is a good idea as suggested
by a previous reply if you are completely unfamiliar with semi-s, but if you
already know how to operate and fire a revolver, a little familiarization is
fine. There are also indoor and outdoor ranges available locally. If you do
buy a Glock at the Dulles Expo Center gun show, I'd recommend buying from a
local dealer. For example, if you buy it from a dealer based in Richmond and
have a problem with it, having it fixed will be much more convenient.

Yes there was a fire. Last word was that the owners are still in business, but by appointment only until they either get the store fixed or find a new one.

I have an AWESOME 44 mag for sale. It is a large frame, 4 inch barrel, stainless steel. It has Walnut grips and I also have Hogue and Packmyr grips for it and a hard, plastic S&W case. The gun is a Smith and Wesson model 629.
I had it for years, but it only had 12 rounds fired from it and it is in PERFECT shape. I would take $475 for it.
Seriously, the gun is perfect and beautiful. It's a great deal. It's just too big for me and my wife is giving me guff anyhow about keeping a firearm.

This woman is attempting to deny your 2nd Amendment rights. Dispose
of her appropriately. The .44 mag is very powerful and the recoil
is punishing for some. I suggest trading your wife for a 9mm or
38 Special.

Since the IP addresses are all being logged, can the moderators just send the list of those on this forum to the police, since gun owners are more likely to commit crimes.

I’m a woman and have a conceal carry permit.

I carry an S&W 38 w/ hollow point bullets. Never leave home without it. I live in one of the safest neighborhoods in Fairfax County. Fairfax cops are good but when seconds count you can’t always wait.

I go to the NRA range or go to The Range in Stafford at least once a month.

I have 3 boys and they know Gun Safety and go to the range also.

Virginia Arms in Manassas is one of the best places to go.

Gander Mountain in Fredericksburg has a nice selection of arms, but the some of the staff are not very knowledgeable.

Shooters Paradise burnt down about 2 years ago.

And I VOTE!

Why a Glock? The trigger can pinch your finger if you shoot alot. Look at several pistols in the cal. you think you want. Combat Tupperware is way over rated.

Your friend is full of crap. I've gone to several guns shows there
and its mostly white middle class Yuppies. There are a number of blacks
and I dont remember seeing any "goths". You are making this up in order
to demonize people you dont like or understand. Suggest you pull you
head out of your behind and attend yourself before you jump to conclusions
based on bullshit. BTW, one of the reasons the Dulles Expo gun shows
are so incredibly successful is due to the fact that Fairfax folks
have plenty of money to spend. The dealers love it. And...
I am a redneck and proud of it. If you dont like that you know what to do.

Whoops, almost forgot. They also sell some very nice jewelry for the
ladies.

Will you be my friend? It's so hard to find women who are willing to make the effort to protect themselves rationally and sensibly. Ty for the info. I was looking for a firing range.

I am for second amendment rights, but lessons learned from the Va Tech incident teach us that people need to be mentally stable to handle firearms. If you want to clean the bathrooms at the range that would be great, but please don't encourage people to hand you a weapon.

Clark Bros. in Warrenton is good. The staff id very knowledgeable, or you can wait for the next gun show at Dulles Expo Center; November 21 - 23. If you've never handled a handgun before, I HIGHLY recommend taking a safety class that's pretty cheap.

Yup....they'll show up just in time to take a picture of your dead rotting corpse, and then go back to writing tickets for flashing your headlights at oncoming traffic. Trust no one but yourself, to protect....yourself and your family.

what's funny is the person who's interested in the guns doesn't really need it at all, and just wants to put everyone around him in danger.

Yeah, us gun owners just want to put others in danger. WTF kind of logic is that? We buy guns to protect ourselves from lunatics like you. If Obama is elected president, he will take away our guns, and trust me, there will be a revolution in this country when that happens.

If this market were to tank another three thousand points and every non essential schlub and affirmative action hire were told to hit the bricks, everyday society would descend into lawlessness rather quick. 25-30% unemployment? Some communities could easily see 50%. Think of all the people that live hand to mouth in this country? In every class of society too. Don't forget what happens when a little taste of panic hits the air. Remember SuperDome 2005? People become uncivilized, and start TAKING what they feel entitled to. Unfortunately, many good people that believe government will be there for them will find out assuredly, how wrong they were.

Now might be a good time to consider how you plan to defend whats yours.

Fairfax makes you wait a week for a handgun. The rest of the state is cash and carry.

Is a separate handgun permit required for handgun ownership in Virginia, or just to carry it concealed? If I had a pistol for home defense, and only carried it outside my home to the range on my belt, in the holster, would I need a separate permit for that?

To understand what goes on in the "open carry" world, here is a

Here the authority for Virginia:

If you conceal a gun, you need a permit.

Anyone can carry a gun in public in a holster on their hip; no permit require, just common sense, ie not in a bank or on government property, etc.

No permit needed to buy a pistol.
Only restriction is that you are limited to purchasing 1 every 30 days.
This limit does not apply to shotguns/rifles.

Open carry is legal without a permit.
Concealed carry requires a permit.
The concealed permit also exempts you from the 1 every 30 days rules

No permit is required in the Commonwealth for carrying a firearm openly. Put it in a holster on your belt and sally forth.

In a car, your firearm must be visible, or locked up, unless you have a permit. Recommend slipping the holster onto the seatbelt of the passenger seat if you're alone, or on your own seat, in case you're stopped.

And Guns & Ammo Warehouse in Manassas is excellent, both in selection and in personnel. They'll help you determine exactly what you want/need.

Hi all, I didn't read the entire thread, so please forgive if this has been covered.

background: I have never owned a gun (I drink and don't trust myself)...but the coming global depression has me scared shitless. I don't care about material things, so I have amassed a considerable fortune just by not buying all the hot trendy shit that everybody else HAS to have (and has to borrow the money for).

But soon, their credit cards will be maxed out, or canceled, and that's what worries me! These spoiled motherfuckers aren't used to hearing "NO!" and might come after me and mine.

What IO really want is several Protecta shotguns (streetsweepers) which thanks to the crack dealers are on some special "dangerous" list now.

This gun was designed by a South African whose wife and kids were murdered by newly liberated post-Apartheid folks that wanted his property, and would kill to get it....EXACTLY WHAT I"M WORRIED ABOUT when our financial meltdown is complete!

So, you experts, are these weapons available? I think I read there is some kind of US Govt fee tacked on....I want at least four, because I've read their main shortcoming is slow reloading.

Any info is greatly appreciated, TIA.

I think this gun is the best way to fight guys that are coming through your front door. And what load is best, 00 buckshot or deer slugs?

While I think you might be a bit on the radical-fringe side of things, because of your reference to a story that you probably could only find on a militia or neo-nazi website about a guy defending his family from the rampaging niggers in post-aparthied S Africa, I'll let you in on a littl secret:

You can own a fully automatic assualt rifle. You jut needs a class III weapons permit. It allows you to own either an automatic weapon or a silencer for a weapon. It is a quite involved process, but if you are an upstanding citizen willing to go through a rigourous process of background checks and IRS reviews, etc, and also willing to be subject to random visits by the ATF or local police anytime an automatic weapon is used in a crime, to present both your weapon and your permit, it will offer you the protection you seek.

You are still restricted to rules about magazine capacity, but that doesn't mean you can't have 100 magazines sitting on the credenza in your foyer.

Hey Bob, wise ass, I read on Wikipedia that the Protecta is a South African weapon...who knows, maybe that's not true, given the nature of that website.

Anyway, if I'm able to obtain one of these guns, can I try it out on your sorry ass?

Yeah, I was being a wise ass. I merely wanted to make clear that your reference about the whole "people wanting to take his property" reference sounds a bit fringe/racially intolerant.

However, I wasn't being facetious or sarcastic about the better option of legally owning an automatic rifle. http://www.recguns.com/Sources/IIF1.html

Yes, if you can obtain a streetsweeper, feel free to try it out on my sorry ass, but keep in mind that I know the process of obtaining an automatic weapon, and may know the process because I took the time to go through it.

Cocky bluster aside, never make threats when you know you have no way to follow through.

I don't think race is going to matter in the next Great Depression....there are going to be hungry people of all races that will be desperate enough to do whatever it takes. People today aren't like they were in the 30's...they have a sense of entitlement and will not suffer in silence like the Okies.

I think food and ammo is all that is going to matter this time around....and I got food covered. I have been an avid gardener for more than 30 years now. Produce from my 9 acres in Southern Fairfax might have even made it to your table. I've sold some of my "boutique" crops to Giant Food and of course lots of common crops at local Farmers' Markets.

So, you have a machine gun and know how to use it? Well, maybe we can team up then?

I really think it's going to get ugly....

I always tell people to never say anything definitive about owning an automatic rifle. It's not a good thing for other people to know about. Just like I would never tell my neighbors that I own a handgun, if I did.

I still think you might be over reacting, or a bit on the reactionary side, with all this "the shit's going to hit the fan" talk.

It doesn't hurt to have a basic level of self defense, and considering you can always produce your own food with the land you own, I wouldn't get too worked up about anything.

I know that both parties and the powerfully wealthy people who are going under have tried to make it seem like you have to approve of their bailout now, or the whole world will collpase around you. But all they've been doing is putting a metaphorical gun to your head.

It is not like you're going to go to bed one night the way things are now, and wake up the next day to marauding bandits with high powered weapons trying to take your property.

First off, they can't "take your property", since there are land records, they can only do that by counterfeiting land records, not by charging your house. Secondly, most law abiding citizens are against owning guns. Criminals have owned illegal guns forever, and this has not happened so far.

"This, too, will pass." That's a good thing to tell yourself whenever things start to seem hopeless.

To get an automatic it must have been made before 1986 and you need to be prepared to pay an extreme premium.

The tax ($200) isn't the problem.
The expense is going to be the gun itself.
Here is an idea of the prices you will pay for 25+ year old guns:

Fairfax does not make you wait a week. If you can provide appropriate ID and the background check comes back clean, you take it with you. The issue is if the background check does not come back completely clean -- it can take 3-7 days to get approved.

I'm trying to sell my Dan Wesson .357 for $800. It comes with (2) six inch barrels, original wood grip, (1) two inch barrel, paddle holster for for the 2 inch barrel, original paperwork, original box, leaf guage, break down tool, (1) speed loader, cleaning kit, 26 rounds of Winchester .357 mags and the hogue contour grip that is already on the firearm. This piece, tools, and barrels are in great shape. Pics upon request. VA residents only! You have to love the state of Virginia just for this reason!!

You can still find some for under $1,000. But the average cost is probably more like $3,000 for something really basic and not as popular as the more exotic weapons.

I worked customer service at sports authority during college, and did all the fishing and hunting licenses, and called in background checks to the state police. It almost always took 3 days. We told people to call before coming in to pick up their gun, just in case, but 95% of the time when they called we never had to say "no word yet".

Sports Authority hasnt carred firearms in years. Thats why I longer
shop there. Of the 3 guns I've bought in Fairfax in the past 3 years,
its never taken more than 15 minutes to get approval.

I have bought at least 5 guns in the last two years. I always go outside and smoke after handing my paperwork in. In each of those five purchases, the approval was recieved before I finished my smoke.

A couple questions:

1. Ok, so you open carry into a bar/restaurant. Does that mean you're not allowed to drink?

2. Are there laws about intoxication and carrying (open or concealed)? Is there a certain BAC that you have to be under for it to be OK, or is it any alcohol in your blood, period?

3. If you CC up to the door, show your ID and switch to OC, can the door guy tell you that you're not allowed to bring it in? Or does a sign have to be posted?

4. Do liquor stores count under the statute? I mean, duh, it's an ABC store, but it also says something about "on-site consumption."

1 and 2: I'm pretty sure it's illegal to drink and handle a firearm.
If not than it should be.
3: Yes. It's private property. Nod different than any other private property.
4: No idea.

#1 and #2, I remember hearing that you can carry, as long as you're not drinking, but that's not spelled out in any legalese that I can find. I don't think there's harm in someone having a beer while open carrying, but you shouldn't be getting smashed while packin' in public.

I figured as much on #3.

#4, I think the way it's written that it's fine for a liquor store, but I'd like a little confirmation from people more experienced in this than I.

Anybody else?

When did Bin Laden throw his hat into this presidential race? Do you really think he has a chance at winning? I mean, Barrack Obama is already in the lead. I don't think Bin Laden can gain that many supporters in such a short time.

I highly recommend this book for firearms laws in VA

Buy fast before Mr. Hussein is elected. The standard Glock magazines will almost certainly be prohibited (again) given his gun-grabbing history.

On the other hand, you might want to save your money. Why buy something only to have to give it up to the gun grabbers not that long after?

The letter says "on premise consumption." You don't drink at the liquor store.

Bob, you're probably one of those "isawyourmommalickem" mutha fuckers huh?? When I mentioned "bin laden" I was referring to that sorry ass obama. I guess you'll be one of the sorry ass people that will vote for this "post turtle". If you don't know what that is, look it up. If you still have troubles finding what a post turtle is, I can send you the info. I've read some of your other posts and I find you to be informative and smart. Don't be a dumb ass on this post. Keep the common sense and good logic.

I'd say it's a really bad idea. It's illegal to hunt or carry concealed while intoxicated.

"J1. Any person permitted to carry a concealed handgun, who is under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while carrying such handgun in a public place, shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor."

> 2. Are there laws about intoxication and carrying

This is all I can find in addition to the above: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-28

But my search has not been very detailed...

They can tell you. It's their property (if they are the owner or an agent of the owner).

> 4. Do liquor stores count under the statute? I
> mean, duh, it's an ABC store, but it also says
> something about "on-site consumption."

I don't believe so. The relevant statute for concealed carry is § 18.2-308.:

J3. No person shall carry a concealed handgun onto the premises of any restaurant or club as defined in § 4.1-100 for which a license to sell and serve alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption has been granted by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board under Title 4.1 of the Code of Virginia; however, nothing herein shall prohibit any sworn law-enforcement officer from carrying a concealed handgun on the premises of such restaurant or club or any owner or event sponsor or his employees from carrying a concealed handgun while on duty at such restaurant or club if such person has a concealed handgun permit.

First note that the statue is specific to restaurants or clubs (specifically of a type defined in 4.1-100) AND are licensed for on-premises consumption. First off, the ABC store does not fall into a restaurant or a club definition. Secondly, they do not allow on premises consumption. I find nothing in the statues that prohibits carrying in an ABC store. The ABC letter sent to the VCDL looks like a 'smoke and mirror's' letter. They didn't answer the question asked, they answered a different question.

By the way the Virgina ABC site does list the establishments who have been licensed for on-premises consumption. You can download a list for the whole state. It's mostly the places you think of, but some places, like Wegmans and Whole Foods, you might not have realized were licensed.

Alternatives? You'll use your Tae Kwon Do skillz when 3 dudes with bats roll up in a van to club you for fun. Oh wait, that never happens.

I guess if you never leave mom's basement the chances are slim for you to need to "defend yourself". Or God forbid, someone else.

Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly. As what's left of this nation crumbles into oblivion one has little choice but to be armed.

I used to carry sometimes. Now I carry all the time after this particular Landsdowne murder. I no longer care if anyone sees my gun, or is anxious or nervous about it. Being considerate of anothers' irrational fear was a burden for me and no longer worth the risk.

What happened in 1993? Bill Clinton? I thought he was referring to the coming economic collapse. People who think the market being up for the last week or so means we're out of the woods, makes me LMAO. This country (and thus the world) is so deep into the shit, the only thing that's clear is that we've never seen an economic situation so bad in our entire history as a nation. Yes...I believe the current situation well end up being worse (for the US at least) than the 1930's.

Any MS-13 or Blood member. Tell them what model you want and they will rob the person who has that gun and charge you a small fee.

You ought to start at the range at Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly. You can rent all kinds of semi-autos - glocks, sigs, s&w, etc. I suggest you try a few out before settling on a Glock. I've noticed that some people really like Glocks and some don't like them at all. I'm in the latter category. So, try a few different pistols out before deciding which one you want.

Don't buy from Blue Ridge though -- their prices are too high. I like Loudoun Guns in Leesburg for buying. They have a great selection of handguns, and quite a few rifles as well. Good prices for a retail store.

You can get better prices at gun shows. There's one coming up at the Chantilly Expo Center Friday April 24 through Sunday April 26. It will be very crowded and there are a lot of tables. You'll want to target (ha ha) the tables that have the particular gun(s) you're interested in, so know what you want coming in and don't waste your time. Good prices on ammo at the shows too.

As to the advantage of buying from a local dealer in case you have problems, 9 times out of 10 they'll just tell you to contact the manufacturer, so I think you might as well buy at a show and not worry about dealer service. Just make sure you buy a new gun. (I always prefer new -- you never know how the last person may have treated a used gun...just my opinion).

Definitely take a class to teach you about overall gun safety, and semi-auto operation. Blue Ridge arsenal has classes, and so does the NRA.

So, rent some different ones at the range to see what you like, do some research on the net for prices and details about the guns (like reliability), buy at a show, and take a class or two.

Finally, be safe, and have fun!

I think the idea of people "defending their property" in the event of social/economic collapse is laughable.

Imagine, for a moment, that civil strife does break out, and roving bands of thugs are killing and looting indiscriminately. Or, the government comes to take your house. Either one, because those two happen ALL THE TIME in Fairfax county.

Do you really think, in either situations, that hunkering down, boarding up the windows, and barricading yourself inside is a good idea? If the thugs can't get in, they'll just burn the house down, and the government will just come back with bigger guns and more people.

The best solution for long-term social unrest is having a firm grasp of basic survival skills, and getting away from heavily populated areas. How long do you think the power grid will stay active when everything goes to hell? What about water service? Who's running the grocery stores, if they haven't already been completely looted?

Traveling light and staying on the move is the best idea, at least in the real world.

Excellent points Sir! I have often wondered what mass chaos would be like
in this area considering the fact that we cant even deal with an inch of
snow. I thoroughly agree its best to have your own personal evacuation
plan. An "organized" evacuation would be catastrophic and I have no
confidence in the Feds being able to control the aggressive mindset of
selfish Yuppies. "Traveling light" hits the nail on the head.
