From Chili's site:
"Advance Notice: This particular Chili's Restaurant will be permanently shutting down operations on December 28th"

IIRC the Mac Grill @ Reston was closed and then reopened, but don't know why..(I know it's not on the website anymore)

Two reasons.

One, I called them and they said they were still open.
Two, my friend was there the day it was posted buying gift cards.
Just thought of a third; because you didn't link to the lease listing.

It may be true. But I am skeptical.

SOME of the food is pretty good but they can't get any orders right. Tried delivery a couple of times and there was almost always something missing.

First time I did carryout, the order was correct but I understood what was going on there - its run by kids.

The second (and last time) I tried carryout I ordered pretty standard stuff, shwarma, hummus, etc. and they brought me two jalapeno-and-pineapple pizzas. Then they re-made the whole order and a dish was STILL missing.

Basically, you have to go in there and sit down for table service for them to get anything right.

I met one of the Fritzbees owners back in the day. He said they catered to the college crowd and got killed when the drinking age went from 18 to 21. They went on to open a few other successful restaurants (sorry, I can't remember the names).

They are the Great American Restaurant Group, who own and operate Sweetwater Tavern (several locations), Carlyle (Shirlington), Mike's American Grill (Springfield), Coastal Flats (several), Artie's (Fairfax), Jackson's (Reston Town Center), and probably a couple that I cannot recall. A few other successful restaurants, indeed! Those original owners are now loaded...

Add Ozzie's at Fairfax Corner and Silverado in Annandale (which began as a Fritzbee's).

> Those original owners are now loaded...

Well one of them (Mike) is dead, and one of them (Jim) is retired and moved away. GAR is still family-owned and family-run though, so nobody's hurting very much. They came up with a winning formula and have seen it succeed well beyond what anyone could have imagined back in they day. They still do a great job.

Man, everything is closing.

#1 Sears lost 580 million dollars in the fourth quarter of 2015 alone, and they are scheduled to close at least 50 more “unprofitable stores” by the end of this year.

#2 It is being reported that Sports Authority will file for bankruptcy in March. Some news reports have indicated that around 200 stores may close, but at this point it is not known how many of their 450 stores will be able to stay open.

#3 For decades, Kohl’s has been growing aggressively, but now it plans to shutter 18 stores in 2016.

#4 Target has just finished closing 13 stores in the United States.

#5 Best Buy closed 30 stores last year, and it says that more store closings are likely in the months to come.

#6 Office Depot plans to close a total of 400 stores by the end of 2016.

#7 Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores, including 154 inside the United States.

#8 K-Mart is closing down more than two dozen stores over the next several months.

#9 J.C. Penney will be permanently shutting down 47 more stores after closing a total of 40 stores in 2015.

#10 Macy’s has decided that it needs to shutter 36 stores and lay off approximately 2,500 employees.

#11 The Gap is in the process of closing 175 stores in North America.

#12 Aeropostale is in the process of closing 84 stores all across America.

#13 Finish Line has announced that 150 stores will be shutting down over the next few years.

That's just the reality of what we're facing now. Maybe at some point, people will realize the 4.9% unemployment rate being reported is pure bunk.

It's really not. Many of those are relatively routine or relatively insignificant. What we're seeing is change, not closing. Brick and mortar giving way to digital, old business models giving way to new.

The Wal-mart closings, for instance, were a result of them doing away with their small Wal-Mart Express offerings. They're planning to open 400 real Wal-Marts this year.

While there are pains with change, this is just fearmongering.

Right now, 36 states have higher unemployment rates than in 2007, prior to going into the recession. What kind of recovery is that? Further proof that the stated unemployment rate is a farce.

When Mike's American Grill opened in the late 80's it was a really unique and fun place to eat. Now, it's just dated.

GAR group serves good not great food at overly inflated, unreasonable prices. Also, every one of their joints is loud as fuck.

In some ways, GAR's businesses really are the "perfect" NOVA restaurants...

True.

I don't know what it is about all of their places being so loud. It's almost like they pipe in extra ambient noise.

Luciano's in Tyson's Mall closed a couple of weeks ago. It may have been the last of the originals stores; the sign in the window said "Thanks for letting us serve you for 42 years, please visit our other restaurant in Fair Oaks Mall."

No, it's just all the people who are drawn to average quality food served at inflated, unreasonable prices. LOL!

There are people who will get pissed off at the success of anyone or anything. Sometimes, we call these people "losers."

Like mattress stores, a lot of them seem to be from Falls Church.

So, the Old Outback in Fairfax City is under construction. Looks like whatevers going in there is almost ready to open. Any one know what restaurant is going in there? No name on the place yet. And btw, the old Victoria Station used to be where the CVS is now, but next door to the old Outback.

Also, the "other" Old Ruby Tuesdays (on rt50) on the west side of the city is also under construction, behind the Wendy's, down the street from the new Lowes (old K-mart). It almost looks like its gonna be a Buffalo Wild Wings but that's just my pure speculation.

Yes your right I saw in the Patch it will be a wing joint. Sure liked Rays steak and seafood that was there after ruby Tuesday's. Sure closed quick. Maybe high rent.

More like the food was terrible. Ate there once and never returned. Not paying for bad food especially when there are more options to choose from.

Rays is a steak restaurant in Arlington.

The place you are referring to, was called Marlin and Rays. The place is owned by Ruby Tuesday's. It failed just like Ruby Tuesday's did for a lot more reasons than high rent.

The building that you see under construction is becoming a Buffalo Wild Wings.

The old Outback in Fairfax is becoming Hooters, which will move from it's current location.

Yeah your right. I couldn't think of the exact name. I liked that place. Better than ruby Tuesday's even if they are related. Oh well. Not a wing fan so Proa Bly won't eat there.

I wonder if they will tear down that strip mall after Hooters moves. It sure needs a facelift.

There's been a desire to replace it for a while, especially since the fire, and things are definitely shutting down and not coming back. But I'm not aware of any specific plans.

Patriot's Cafe seems to be the only successful business in that strip mall. Do you think they will be able to re-locate?

And don't understand how that Baskin Robins can stay in business. It's been there as long as I can remember, 40 plus years, but don't see too many people in there especially during the winter.

Looks like they're still leasing space there:

http://www.regencycenters.com/retail-space/va/fairfax/fairfax-shopping-center#.Vt3_I5zyuUk

But it does say "Potential redevelopment opportunity" so I guess they're open to "if you want the whole thing, we can talk about kicking out who's there and we can re-do it all!"

Ironically, the Basking Robins site has also survived through all of the frozen yogurt shops that have come and gone in the past 2 years.

While I feel bad for employees who've lost their jobs, I have to agree their closure is no great loss. I remember having an allergic reaction after eating at Old Country Buffet due to cross-contamination. I never went back.

So stuff it Crybaby with your weak allergic reaction and P.C crap about people losing jobs "Alligator Tears".... You have a problem with the place go elsewhere and quit bitchen asshole. If you were not such a fat pig with your plate filled to the max with fried chicken over and over, you would have been alright.. and so would OCB..

Lots of people will miss the place. Its a Great loss to many of us..If you could control what you put on your plate you could eat a decent meal with a good salad for a cheap price. But Fatties..Overeaters .. Democrat Pigs.... You can never please them..Its all FREE or Nothing..

Fanfare Eatery at Fairfax Corner closed, sometime between February 5th and today. It's no longer listed on their web site as a location.

I'll miss it. I found the food decent and it was inexpensive. We could take the family there and then hang out at the fountain during the warm months, especially before a movie.

I imagine that the one in Greenbriar Town Center will not be far behind. The parking lot for that place is empty every time I pass by.

The last time we ate there was for lunch during the middle of the week. There was a man who didn't look showered sitting at a table and talking (ranting) to himself while he ate plate after plate of food. And of course there were always the professional eaters who went in there and ate and ate and ate and ate - made me sick to watch them. I'm not exactly skinny myself but those people grossed me out. Sorry.

The food was cheap cafeteria food, not great but not bad, and there was a nice variety to choose from. And, yes, you could even get a fairly healthy meal there between the salad bar, veggies and lean meat. The service was decent and the employees all really nice. But some of the customers in that place....yeesh, they made me lose my appetite. After the dirty ranting guy we never went back.

The Akasaka restaurant has been open for 20 years... I doubt they closed cause of lack of business, they seemed pretty popular.. There's a notice on the door talking about an agreement made in 2005 with the landlord and it ended in 2015... Maybe a 10 year lease that the landlord didn't wanna renew?
