I was looking for info on the earthquake today and saw your posts. We live in the Buffalo, NY area and our 3-story office building actually shook back and forth a few times around 1:55pm today. We thought it might be an earthquake but are amazed to find out that the epicenter was as far away as the Virginia/Washington,DC area as we thought it would have been closer to us.

A lot of office buildings are being closed, so they can check for damage. Buildings here aren't built for earthquakes, so they're being extra cautious, and besides, the lawyers said it was the thing to do. Rush hour is early today.

We get home to Sully Station from Fairfax and get a frantic call from our relative saying "EARTHQUAKE!".
We didn't feel a thing - in car during the entire episode.
Apparently the neighborhood, however, majorly felt and heard it.

I live on Litchfield Turnpike (RT 69) here in Connecticut. I am near the town boarders between Woodbridge & New Haven and at 1:52pm on Aug 23, 2011 I experienced my first earthquake. As I sat in my apartment, I began to feel the whole house here moving back and forth and then I saw my tv swaying back and forth. The whole event lasted no more than 10 seconds. It was my first earth quake and I am 49 yrs old. Cool! Except, well, does this have anything to do with the end of the world in 2012? Cause an earth quake that was felt over almost 1/2 of the U.S.A. seems like a prophetic moment to me.

that was an awsome quake to be honest. I stayed in my room holding my tv from falling off. At first it felt like heavy steps, or like a jackhammer, then it just felt like a shake from left to right.
what saddens me is how many people in VA (not just nova) realize we have tectonic plates and minor fault lines near fredericksburg,va. granted we just got rocked by the highest quake all-time, i just think people are stupid to think this would never happen here.

I left work early when the quake happened and was heading to Safeway off Willard before going home. They closed the store. I looked in and products were scattered everywhere. Workers there were cleaning it up. Didn't look too bad. Someone said they were only closed long enough to clean up. Makes sense.

All I have to say is, God help us if anything serious ever happens around here. 911 lines were flooded with frantic reports that the earth shook! What do you asshats want emergency services to do about the earth shaking? People were screaming and evacuating buildings because the earth trembled for 15 seconds! I did experience the cell phone issue as a woman said her cell wasn't working. I looked at mine and had 5 bars and handed mine to her. Calls were not connecting. I did find that I could text and email though and simply sent a txt to my home and asked if all was ok. It was.

Crazy shit, I was sitting in the car, and it felt like someone was pushing the car up and down for thirty seconds. The car swung side to side, but it was mostly an up and down motion. At first I thought someone was fucking with me, and after looking around, that's when it dawned-earthquake. Kick ass experience, glad no one is seriously hurt.
