Does Fairfax Really Need Another Sub Shop?

Seriously? I guess with the dozens of Subway shops, Quiznos, Firehouse subs, and many others, there's another one headed our way. Jersey Mike's is coming to Fairfax. They'll be located in the shopping center across from K-Mart in Fairfax. Their sign is already up, so I assume they'll open soon.

Many of you might remember, this is the same small strip where the Blimipies was ... and, lasted about one whole year before closing and turning into Luigi's Pizza. I've never tried Jersey Mike's, but I've heard from others who have and thought they were just mediocre.

Doesn't anyone conduct focus groups anymore? Heck, pay us $25.00 a piece, put us in a room for an hour to answer questions to these owners and marketers of products. We'll be able to tell them what will survive and what will not. My bet is that this place might make it a year or two, then disappear. That is, unless, they're getting subsidized by other locations to stay in business.

No more chain restaurants!!

I was looking at a report of the top 100 franchises. Quizno's closed down 600 locations in 2010. Not gooood!

Before Luigi's that spot was:

Z-Pizza
Manhattan Bagel
Blimpies

Actually, Luigi's pizza is still in the end location of the strip mall. The Jersey Mike's is taking over a spot in the middle of the strip of 5 or so shops.

In regards to Quiznos, I've heard that the initial investment is $200K to get it up and running. Then, you're advised that you won't be profitable for at least two years. Also, that information is about 7 years old, now, so I can only imagine how much worse the climate is today with all the competition. Franchises such as Subway are over-selling and they appear as if they really don't care if one shop cannibalizes another one two blocks away.

I guess that's life in the big city.

Seems like several Potbelly's going up in each town. I live with 2 miles of 3 stores.

Jersey Mike's is a lot better than Subway, Quizno's and Blimpie's. Best of luck to the Fairfax location. It is not on one of my regular routes, but I would probably go somewhat out of my way on occasion.

Jersey Mike's is pretty good...Very similar to Blimpie. I said the same thing about another sub shop, when I stopped by Sports Authority the other day. They're about to open up another Subway right next door.

Personally, I think Firehouse is the best.

The new Walmart might create a lot of traffic in that strip, certainly a lot more than Bloom and the long vacant Expo store does now.

Jersey Mikes is outstanding. Steps above the Subway/Blimpie. It will do well.

I only see Blimpies at ghetto gas stations, I had not idea it even had a following. I think the Pot Belly closed that was in Fairfax City where there was also a Panera. I don't fancy spending close to 10 dollars on their processed, shitty sandwiches that inexplicably have 10,000 calories Cosi's sandwiches are the worst, although I think they have a healthier line now. It is hard to justify spending money on a sandwich when the same amount of money can buy a loaf a bread, pound of deli meat, lettuce and a tomato. However when it is the only option, Subway is the best of all the options for price and calories.

The processed, shitty, expensive and calorie bomb diatribe was directed towards Panera.

My only exposure to Blimpie is that the only one I know if is located in the Mobile/Exxon in Herndon. There's no way I'm eating a sub that's made in a gas station.

I wish I could find a good Philly style cheese steak - Geno's style - around here. There was a good place called Al's in Alexandria that I used to go to back in the day, but I haven't found a replacement around central Fairfax.

There's your free focus group info from me.

Starvin Marvin's in Alexandria used to be the best back in the 90's.

"The Deli" by the Kmart has been there since at least the 80's. I stop in for a Hog or Super Deli when I'm hungry in that part of the City.

Not sure if all the Quiznos did this, but the one that I used to frequent suddenly started using waaayyy less meat in their subs. This was around late 2009/early 2010. So I stopped going there completely 'cause I wasnt about to pay more than Subway prices for two pieces of toasted bread with mayo on it.

If all the other franchisees did the same, then that would explain the high number of closures in '10.

I grew up in Philly and it is hard to find a good cheesesteak anywhere but Philly. I do like the cheesesteak at Buon Appetito in Chantilly. It is and has been owned and run my the Merone brothers, real Italians. I order it the way a real cheesesteak should be.....with onions and cheese only. A REAL cheesesteak NEVER has tomatoes and lettuce. I do add hot peppers to mine. Buon Appetito fills it with meat and cheese, most places give you a certain amount of beef and when u don't get the garden on it you are left with a thin sandwich. The roll is good but not the real Philly roll, but close.

I just had one of their Italian sandwiches tonight. It was good, actually. It was also my first time eating at Firehouse. I wonder what the special sauce was that made the sub so tasty? Mmm ...

Ah, I'm not a Communist. I'm simply pointing out that there is essentially little creativity anymore in people. They go for that chain or franchise mentality.

Call me simple-minded, but I thought the new Subway BBQ sandwich was fairly decent for a big chain like that.

As mentioned in other threads, Tonys in Fair Lakes has great subs. I also like the Deli place next to Kmart, although I am used to sub shops being owned by Italians!

Your response is part of my point. I was - to a point, commenting about the number of sub shops. Essentially, though, I was mainly pointing out the chains or franchises that plague every strip mall in northern Virginia. To me, these franchises really don't offer anything exciting. Mom 'n Pop places, on the other hand, offer some creativity - some real elbow grease to start up and operate a place. They use their unique menus and combinations to provide a great service and great food to a customer. A franchise, on the other hand, tends to do everything "text book" style - with little variation. To me, that's too cookie-cutter.

If I want a good Italian sub, I also go to Little Italy in Centreville. Though I believe the place has probably changed hands a few times, they still make a pretty good sub - with some good bread / rolls. A little bit of oil, Boars Heat meat cuts, etc. It's all good.

On the other hand, when I tried Firehouse for the first time, their medium was over $6.00, with tax. Their regular or large was $8.00. For that kind of coin, I'd love to see the Mom 'n Pop or more "authentic" places get my money. In return, I'll tend to get a much better tasting sandwich.

Location, location, location. I've never understood why people constantly open up restaurants in locations where others have failed before. If there is a new restaurant in the same location every two or three years, odds are it is a bad location for a restaurant.

Keep going, please! I'm laughing so hard reading you clowns go on and on about "great subs."

When people start talking about "what makes a great sandwich/sub" I can't help but laugh at their pathetic asses.

You would never catch me dead eating a sandwich. Might as well go put on a pair of socks with sandals.

Keep going! HAHAHA.
