why is TODAI sushi restaurant in Fair Oaks Mall so darn expensive?

earlier this week, my friends and I went to TODAI sushi restaurant in Fair Oaks Mall. Why the heck is this place so darn expensive? I don't mind spending a lot of money for food, as long as it's worth it. They had this rediculously small lobster... I've seen bigger jumbo shrimp than that.... Granted, the sushi were all pretty tasty and clean... but it is in a mall....

oh well...

That was probably a crawdad. Lobster, like crabs, have to be a certain minimum size or they have to throw 'em back.

And first class sashimi is going to cost you. The bluefin tuna has been fished almost to extinction. That's why a ONE large tuna can cost up to $60 GRAND wholesale.

As far as I'm concerend Todai is worth it, their quality and selection of food is next to none in this area. I eat my whole entrance fee in tuna sushi everytime.

Don't forget that TODAI is a buffet and you eat all you want for one price. If you find the price to expensive for what you can or want to eat then order Ala Cart from any one of the local Sushi Bars in town. I personally enjoy the variety of offerings at TODAI.
My presonal favorite is Sweet Ginger in the strip mall at the east end of Vienna.

If you want better value and generous portions (i.e.: no 30 lb, clump of rice over paper thin cut of fish), try the sushi buffet at Matsuri in the Reston/Herndon area. It's $11.99 for lunch and is excellent. Todai is only more expensive because of the convenience factor and the high rent per sq. ft. at Fair Oaks Mall. -§

Todai is not what its used to be.

When they openned, it was much much better. Lots more people too.

Now they some mexicans cooking food, and some dude who speaks zero english serving desert dishes.

Real price for it should be in the 15$ range

You've got that backwards. Todai serves large cut fish (even too large for sushi when I went last Sunday) for the small amount of rice. Matsuri uses twice the amount of rice, and if you leave it on your plate they charge you extra (sashimi price). Additionally, the buffet at Matsuri consists of maybe 6 sushi types and 8 side dishes, which pale in comparison to Todai's variety.

You are right on. Come on sushi is made by Mexican. That not only sound bad but taste bad as well.

I have been in many buffet places but all i can say that this place is worst for the money.

That was my birthday and my wife decide to take the family, me, my wife and the two daughters, to the place. Yes, the price was around 30 dollars each. However, came after us a big family who happen to have a close relationship with one of the waiter. Wow that guy just bring them food after food. I had hard time to find those in the service area. If you happen to go to the place, you know that each person is allowing to have only after lobster, to me it is a big shrimp, in every 15 minutes. This guy bring to that family ton.

What can I do, stand up and yell or not to give him tip. At the end we decide to give him tip and promiss that we are not going to be back. To me the price should be 10 each

on a different note, has anyone been creeped by those fuckers standing on the second floor and staring down at people as well as others walking by? Their main hotspot is near the Sears and eb games.

Isn't it obvious that the rent in a mall is fucking outrageous? Don't you guys realize that in order to have a huge space in a pretty good shopping mall costs thousands in rent a month?

On top of that Sushi is pretty expensive in the first place. I've seen 4-6 rolls for 7 bucks. This is an all you can eat buffet. I can easily throw back a dozen rolls plus without even flinching cuz Sushi really doesn't fill you up.

High rent, expensive product (in portrayal at least), all you can eat aspect, with so many people trying to be high rollers these days = high price.

For example, Reuhl jeans are just jeans, but name brand + trendiness + location in G-town = $200 blue jeans.

Get over it. Some things are overpriced, and if you don't like it, don't eat there.

LOL @ those of you who think it should be $10-15 for dinner. Have you ever been to a real sushi joint? That's like the cost of two rolls. It's a freaking buffet! Granted it's not the best sushi but it's not packed with rice like other places. The variety of food is pretty decent. The only buffet that rivals it is the one that was next to Plaza America on the first floor of that office building. It's now closed. I'm curious how good the Todai in Honolulu is.

Dog is not expensive (except of course for poodle and chocolate labrador).

Best canine choice is Collie (sauteed) and Beagle (lightly fried).

If any of you think Todai is even remotely worth it then you just haven't been to a decent sushi joint. Even the Korean Sushi/Sashimi joints in Centreville blow away Todai. I gave them 2 chances and both times the fish was dry and small and tasted like it had been sitting out for several hours. Service was poor except the 1 time I knew the server. I will never go back and any of you think that place is good need to get out more.

Milk Vapor Inhalation
# Another way milk can reportedly attract tapeworms out of the body is via the nasal cavity. The Welsh Health Systems Newsletter website says to heat up a bowl of milk and inhale the vapors that rise up from the milk so that the tapeworm will smell the milk and exit the body from the nose.

God Jesus! I would not want one of those things crawling through my nasal cavity...

I'd opt for the milk bath....

Let me first address the dynamics of a buffet restaurant. Like previously stated: TODAI is a buffet! You are paying for volume, selection, and better-than-average quality Americanized "sushi"/Asian food. Granted this place is far better quality than your standard buffet and they do serve raw fish, but by no means is this good sushi. When I want real sushi, I'm going to a sushi restaurant, and paying sushi prices.

Concerning TODAI’s prices, one would expect that being located in Fair Oaks, coupled with serving sushi, costs would get directly past down to the customer. However, I would rather take my $30 and go to an authentic place to get my fix. No offense, but once you eat real sushi and Korean food, it’s hard to go back to the Americanized stuff meant for a less-discriminating buffet audience.

I've been to the TODAI in Los Angles and the difference is night and day. Apparently they were founded out there and quality may have suffered upon venturing to the East coast. (Per my Korean girlfriend--TODAI is Korean owned as with almost all sushi joints in the DC area. You’d be hard pressed to find a Japanese place, but that’s another topic.)

So, after all this rambling, I think TODAI is overpriced for the quality. But if you’re looking to gorge, Asian style, then this is your place. However, that same $30 will blow your mind via a real sushi lunch or Korean BBQ elsewhere.

Next time you’re in any buffet (TODAI, Old Country, whatever), look around at your fellow diners for a glimpse of our obesity epidemic in the flesh.

Agree with Zak, sushi buffets always suck. This is news?

Sushi Yama in Vienna and Ariake in Reston are both very good. They will cost you though.

Arigato is good and has great atmosphere. It's on par with Tsunami Sushi in Fair Lakes which I think is excellent. I think they might be owned by the same person/company.

Dika Dika you're a pussy and/or you have parasitophobia.

There is this new thing going around called salmonella, it's much more common than all these sushi parasites you're so afraid of. There can be parasites in water too! OMG! Don't drink water! Grow a pair. Wimp.

I agree with your observation and may add their west coast buffet is better quality.
