check arrest/ticket search before you buy a house

I was about to make an offer on a $900,000 house in Fairfax Station until a friend told me about this search engine. I queried the street I was about to buy on and found 57 infractions on a street with 30 homes. The "nice quiet neighbors" next to the house I was interested in had a older couple with four major speeding tickets (reckless) a domestic assault charge and a telephone harassment charge, On the other side were a couple with a 32 and 28 year old convicted drunk drivers still living at home, I thanked my friend for informing me and I'm going offer the sellers $200k less to make up for living next to these speeding and drunk assholes. This search is a MUST before making a major purchase like a home. There is also a convicted child molester on a neighboring street, He did twenty years in prison for abduction and rape of a child and her mother. He now lives with his mother and step dad. These kind of guys have a chip on their shoulder and are guaranteed to strike again. I'm well justified in a lower offer to buy this particular house because of the neighbors records. If I buy I will always have to worry about this guy (the child rapist) when I let my kids walk to the pool or ball field or fishing at the lake.

While I understand the child molester concern, I don't see how speeding tickets or DUI qualify people as bad neighbours.

Everybody on the street where I live is pretty much retired and guess what? They ALL have tickets within the last 7 years. I'd be pissed if any of them moved out.

The child molester is a different story however, thank god we don't have one of those within several miles.

I wonder sometimes - how did people live BEFORE there was internet, and even then, before there were publicly available databases dealing with child molesters and crime?

I mean, would you drive into the area and ask - do you know if there are any child molesters in the area?

Another thing to look at, is the FCPD list of crimes online. There is one house a 1/2 mile fom me that has the FCPD out, every other week for noise, etc. I would not buy on that street, or near.

Before we bought our house, we drove through at diffetent times of the day, even taking walks though the community looking and listening for things of concern. While you may never know for sureabout a house you are buying, it may help.

I said major violations all reckless one for 56 in 25. This person would be speeding by my home daily. The drunks would have no other exit other than driving by my home at all hours as well, Your neighbors probably have minor violations like expired tags......not domestic assault. Reckless drivers are a different type of people. They don't care about the safety or well being of others. It is a major character flaw. Speeding on a highway is one thing 56 in a twenty five is insane.x

Before the internet the neighbors usually took care of the child molesters one way or another. Same way they took care of most problems in the neighborhood, you will move if you know what is good for you.

You are exactly correct. All their tickets are for minor traffic violations like expired tags or 5-10 over speeding violations.

Please let us know how your offer goes over.

I knew a guy that applied for a job downtown. He wanted like 40% more than he was making because he'd be inconvenienced by having to commute all the way downtown. You might be surprised to learn that he didn't get that job, as there were plenty of others who either lived closer or were willing to commute for a "normal" salary.

It's also possible that the seller was going to ask 1.1 Million, then did a ticket search and said "gosh, there are speeders that live nearby, I'd better just go ahead and knock 200k off my price". Have you checked what other houses on that street have sold for? Because they ALSO would have those same speeders, so their selling price would reflect this huge neighborhood flaw...

I don't see how anyone having speeding tickets makes them a bad neighbor.

if it's a crime, i would be concerned, it it's a traffic infraction, who cares? yes, DUI/DWI is a crime. for those think DUI/DWI isnt a big deal, ive seen 4 or 5 cars that were parked all smashed into each other because some drunk driver hit the first and just kept pressing the gas or something. hilarious from an outside perspective, sucks if it's where you live (and no, it's not where i live). i think if you get convicted of DUI/DWI, they should seize and then burn your car just to spite you.

Your right. Here is a MSN top ten ad.

10. Not completing your due diligence with a criminal search. In many states, agents are not obliged to tell you if there is a sex offender or other unsavory resident in a neighborhood you're eyeing unless you ask. Do so. They tell you to do your own research. Do so. Check with your area law-enforcement agency about how to access sex-offender lists and other criminal databases for this crucial information.

It is not worth it to live in that neighborhood. The end.

Lisa,

I didn't know where the search engine was and I was just about to ask, when I saw your post. Don't pay any attention to Gravis. He suffers from brain damaged incurred when he fell off his tricycle last spring.

Every street I put in comes back with O results. Do you have to fill out every line?

Gavis, thanks, in advance for your response, retard.

Thanks Daler- I guess that's just how he is- eh?

For getting results- you type in as little as possible.. such as Main street Fairfax just put Main as street and fairfax and then va.. just put the first word- it will find the street (very picky about spelling).. hth!

Right, I forgot about that. It's amazing Gravis is still able to type. He's had so many bumps on the head.

At the moment of his birth, the doctor was busy flirting with a nurse, so Gravis ended up falling head first on the floor. The doctor, shocked, quickly wrapped him up in a blue blanket, despite clear indications that maybe a pink blanket might have been a better choice.

Poor Gravis grew up very confused.
