If the statements about targeting the Special Ed kids is true, then that is the most disturbing aspect of this whole thing. It is the result of poor parenting, poor education, poor value development, poor everything. Cancelling prom and other senior activities is nothing compared to what happened. It speaks volumns about the state of our society.

Speaking of prom, has anyone ever stopped and considered the astronomical costs associated with the prom? One year, and this quite a few years ago, I did a very cursory survey of how much money was spent on prom. First is the money raised by the class to help pay for the venue, which "ain't cheap". Then each couple's costs, flower, tux rental, new dress, shoes, dinner, limo or other transportation, after prom activities. It amounted to over $600 per couple, I'm guessing with inflation $600 is low. So how many couples go to the prom at WSHS, 200, 300? I have no idea. But let's say 200, that amounts to $120,000 plus the cost of the venue, which could run another $40,000. Anyway, we are approaching $150,000 for one night, at one school. How many high schools in FCPS, 25 or so. So what is probably a conservative estimate of $3,000,000 for one night in FCPS. And this doesn't include the hidden costs of the hours spent by administrators and teachers in planning and preparing for the event during the contract day, not to speak of the "volunteer" hours spent chaparoning.

Seems like an extravagent waste to me.

Don't be a party downer.

A lot of fun things cost money.

You can go to the prom on many different budgets.

It is all how you want to spend your money.

After being in the grip of the FCPS who would not want to let loose.

Plus it is safer since adults are in charge.

All the lunch rooms have SE kids and it was just a food fight by the seniors. No group was targeted.

It's a lot of money but it's also a lot of money going out to local businesses, or at least businesses locally, so it's not really that bad a thing. Also it's kind of like a wedding. It's something you spend money on to have a special night where you dress up and get all nice and have a real "adult" night out. Some kids, this could be one of the highlights of their lives.

Many, of course, decide to eventually drop all the "classiness" of the event and get hammered, but then that's what happens a lot at weddings too.

so let me see if I get this straight - the Special Ed students shouldnt have the "LUXURY" of having lunch then, is that it? cause some kids want to start throwing food, chairs and trash cans?

Accountability works both ways, my friend - which is why there may not be a prom for the Spartans....................................

The LD kids that were attacked are not returning to the school. They have told their parents they don't feel safe at West Springfield High. Their lawyer instructed them not to return. The school has not officially cancelled the senior class activities and this has really pissed off the LD parents. It is sad that the administration and principal is so weak. They thought the threat of cancelling would be enough. They are to afraid of the parents (who bitch about an $100 athletic fee then spend a thousand dollars or more on limos, dinners and class trip/party). The principal has NO BALLS! These selfish punks (students if you want to call them students) were all boys who attacked the LD kids.

If it were me I would get these punks shave their heads and have them picking cigarette butts and trash around the school parking lot.

My kids are home schooled. My seventeen and fifteen year old are going up to West Springfield all this week looking for any of these punks who want to give them some lip so they can try out some of their gold glove training. And I encourage it!

Interesting tally of costs you created. And I'm sure there are people out there that spend that amount, but not everyone, by any means. Some kids already have Tuxes from music or other commitments, and a nice suit works as well. The dress etc costs can vary widely. One dress may cost $50 while another could be $300, it depends on the parents and what they are willing to spend. I know a family that spent over $600 for their daughter to go to some country concert at Jiffy Lube Live last year, new clothes, boots, hat, the tickets, money for food there and souvenirs, etc. I also know someone else who paid for lawn seats for the same concert and gave their kid $20 to buy some food, but nothing else. Different strokes for different folks.

Personally, I think it's stupid that people rent a freaking limo for prom. What a huge waste of money. If you're really well off and you can do that regularly, go for it, but these middle class idiots that are spending oodles of cash for one silly dance just astound me.

A big part of the extravagance is the mix of income levels here. THere are plenty of people with a healthy bank balance and plenty more that want to pretend they have that much cash too. Other areas aren't so insane for their senior activities. It's just high school people.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

Sending your older sons to school to pick a fight is going to land them in jail.

What kind of mother are you to encourage this?

Let the school and or police handle it.

You also need some psyc help too. You don't seem to have a lid on your anger.

You see Derry; my daughter was one of the ones targeted. Their brothers are going there not to pick a fight but end one. They don't want fight anyone but the punks who assaulted their sister, and they will, I can't stop them. Since they are juveniles, they won't be going to jail. I have already checked my insurance policy and I'm covered if one of my boys causes any real damage. They are young men and that’s what men do. They settle issues for themselves; a broken nose will heal their sisters wounds may never. If you had a son you would understand that this matter HAS to be settled to their satisfaction, what kind of young man would let these punks do this to their sister?

You sound like public school trash. In fact one of the police officers told the boys "I would not blame you if you went looking for the punks who hit your sister". My boys are fine young men who are hell bent on making sure the punks at West Springfield High know exactly how they feel, sorry if this upsets you but blood is thicker than water, something you don't know or care about.

What kind of mom would not let their boys stick up for their sister, they have been boxing for ten years each and are brown and black belts respectively, so this mom is not concerned for their safety? It was my husband who I had to calm down, and I feel sorry for the dads of these punks when my husband finds out who they are. He will find them and beat the shit out of them unless they get down on their knees and beg for forgiveness for raising a punk who assaults learning disabled girl.

wow.............that's kinda scary. Let me see if I get this straight. Your husband would "beat the shit" out of another parent until they beg for forgiveness?

That's just fascinating..................

You ask "What kind of mom would not let their boys stick up for their sister?"

well, I answer you: ONE WITH ANY LICK OF GODDAMN COMMON SENSE IF SHE SERIOUSLY THOUGHT HER SONS WERE GOING TO TRULY GO OUT AND ASSAULT OTHER CHILDREN WHEN THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE SIGN OF DANGER!!

Listen to me, and LISTEN GOOD, lady - your attitude is gonna get yr boys locked up and if you give a FUCK about them, you'll make sure they dont put their hands on another child

a) they have no reason to be on Spartan campus if they dont go there - so criminal trespass right off the bat - and if you think they could go there and start fighting with other students and not end up in jail over it, yr a cpl of passengers shy of an HOV lane

b) if yr boys fuck up and attack the wrong student, then they are just as stupid and violent as the a-holes who attacked the girl. And since they dont go there, how are they going to find who did it? And KNOW THEY ARE BEING GIVEN ACCURATE INFO?

c) In case you havent noticed, they make bullets out of Kryptonite these days - and yr Superman husband would be well pressed to take his head out his ass and focus on taking care of his daughter more than go out for vengence. Cause I know how I would handle someone coming to my house and putting his hands on me for something my kid did instead of listening to how I've already beat the crap out of my kid for being such an a-hole prick in the firstplace.

d) if they do go to WS, they could end up starting an even BIGGER problem than the one we are dealing with now. Way to go, moms..............

if yr daughter is injured, have a police report been filed?

cont.

also, if they willingly go to campus after the fact of the fight, then YES, they ARE going there to pick a fight.

Personally, I hope to GOD that all the kids involved in this are kicked out of school (i.e. no graduation) and if it can happen, are prosecuted to the FULLEST EXTENT of the law.

That being said...........IT IS ASININE TO CONTINUE THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE!!

IT IS STUPIDITY IN AND OF ITSELF FOR A PARENT TO ACT LIKE THEIR CHILD SEEKING VENGEANCE IS A RESPONSIBLE ACT!!

Heck, I've been debating all day on another thread over pretty much the EXACT same issue - only difference on that one is that we have an 18 yr old in the ground over it - and not too far from where you live, lady.

And if you want that to happen (maybe yr boys do the killing, maybe they do the dying) then you are as clueless as clueless can be.

cant predict how a streetfight will end - and to allow/support yr CHILDREN to get involved in one.........................DAMN, still shaking my head in disbelief.............................damn, my head is going to explode today.

The school is on alert for two rednecks who do not belong on school property.

Plus a seventeen year old can be charged as an adult. Since you agreed to it you could go to jail too.

If you were not at the school that day, and you do not have all of the facts, stay out of this!

This matter concerns the individual parents of the students involved and the students themselves.

I do have a Senior that attends WSHS that wasn't involved.

There are 600 to 800 seniors at WSHS. I doubt that all of them were involved or planned this.

I'm a senior at West Springfield and am getting so tired of coming on sites like this and seeing dumbass parents who have no idea what they are talking about making up crap about us.

To say that we were "targeting" special ed kids just makes you sound like a sick, sadistic asshole. In no way shape or form were they being "targeted" and whoever is saying that is an idiot who has no idea what they are talking about. It's very sad but the special-ed kids were just caught in the crossfire of a prank gone wrong. Believe me, we are doing our part to make amends with the kids in the FLEX program affected by this. I can confidently say whoever said that we were throwing food at them has no soul.

Parents of students at WSHS that are underclassmen writing on this forum get the hell out of here. Your precious sons and daughters were just as guilty as we are as far as food throwing so take your bias opinions and piss off.

It's said that grown people like you guys, who I'm guessing are the loser parents at every PTSA meeting, have nothing better to do than come on a forum and start making up bullshit about my class trying to make us look like even more of villains than we already do. Every parent that has condemned us on this forum is a loser that seriously needs a life if they have nothing better to do than go online and talk shit about high school kids that made a mistake, you are not perfect so quit acting like it.

Bottom line: we made a mistake, we will pay for the mistake, get over it, move on.

If your son or daughter is still bitching about getting hit with food tell them to get over it and shut the hell up. So did the other 800 kids in the cafeteria.

While I have no idea if the LD kids were targeted in this case, it is certainly believable. I drove a "big bus", but due to "mainstreaming", I transported a fair number of LD kids over the years.

Many of the "normal" kids were incredibly cruel to them. These animals took great pleasure in upsetting the LD kids.

In fact, the parents who assume that all "LD" or "Special Ed" kids are helpless retarded children are doing more damage in perpetuating that ridiculous stereotype than any of you did by accidentally pelting them with a fry or two. If you want the reason the WSHS kids acted up, look no further than their stifling, asshole of a principal. He brought this about by being totally out of tune with his students, staff, and parents.

To ex fcps driver and Shadow,

You two have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. It's 2011, picking on mentally challenged kids does not happen as much as you dipshits think especially not at West Springfield. For you idiots to accuse us of picking on kids in the FLEX program is uncalled for and obnoxious. You guys are losers hoping to create a reaction out of people on this forum and for that I simply say GET A LIFE.

You assholes probably have no idea the close relationship students have with kids in the FLEX program by attending monthly Buddy's Club meetings where we hang out with these kids and participate in activities with them. Niether of you go to our school so stop acting like you know what the fuck is going on. You do not know shit about the senior class or WSHS for that matter if you think we are bullying kids in the FLEX program.

And FYI...if you are going to try to accuse the WSHS students for picking on the FLEX kids think of a better name than "ex fcps driver". Why the hell does anybody care about the opinion of a driver?? Do something with your life and we might respect your opinion and quit talking crap about us when you obviously haven't accomplished anything in your pathetic life.

OK folks - A good spirited, stress relieving, relatively advertised event with no malicious intent had some regrettable second order effects. Apologies all around. Punish as needed by the PC police. Lets move on.

@teacher - um, you are the only one with that stereotype of the LD students. REPEAT: THE ONLY ONE! And your response is one of the most asinine ones posted on this thread. Yeah, it's the Principal's fault, you see. That's like saying that if a murder happens, it's the cops fault for not being there at the time. Grow up cause aint nobody here painted the Special Ed kids as anything like what you painted AT ALL!

@Get a life - nobody is accusing ALL the Spartans for doing this. And it sucks that all the seniors are paying the price. But some of y'all started this, and doesnt sound like ANY of y'all helped to stop it. If y'all so close to the FLEX students, how come nobody thought to help them when this all went down? What's up with the chairs and trash cans?

We had food fights when I was in high school a cpl times, but NOBODY GOT HURT IN THEM

sorry, kiddo - but based on yr posts here, sounds like you could care about other ppl, their feelings and stuff

Tell my to fuck off all you want it it makes you feel better - but yr tone and choice of words - if you are truly an example of the seniors of Spartan Country, you are making them look not so good, especially in light of recent events.

And you're seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. No, it doesn't happen like you see on TV, but it does happen. It's more subtle, but I was making the point that people pick on others all the time. Hell, you can see that on this site on other threads quite easily. If it didn't happen there wouldn't be such a PC-push to create awareness about bullying. There are programs in many schools, including here in FCPS, trying to get kids to understand what it is and that its wrong. Still happens though. And as for not having an idea of what I'm talking about, I had a kid in special ed here in FCPS, so, yeah, I have a clue.

BTW, I never said the kids at WSHS targeted the special ed kids, I merely pointed out that people do pick on others.

And Get a Life, you yourself just picked on/bullied ex fcps driver. Proves my point. For all you know, they were a driver because they had been a special ed student and that's the best they could do. Doesn't mean their opinion isn't worthwhile.

Hell if you have a pimple it is a bad day school.

I am sure they would rather have their own school.

They will panic and send you right to a mental hospital.

Um, we are talking about a food fight right? Its not like there was a heroine ring or kids making crush videos - its a food fight.

If a food fight is the biggest problem the school has I would have to say the Principal is doing a better than average job. Is he perfect - I have absolutely no idea but claiming a food fight is the downfall of modern education speaks more about the parents than the administration.

Lighten-up for heaven's sake...

Sadly tomorrow after the monster announcement during 2nd period..the students will whine how this is completely unfair and unwarranted...I have no doubt that members of the student body will respond this way...you just knew the everythings canceled idea was never going to happen...this is the next best course hopefully it repairs the damage to the schools rep. However since we live in a world of I only care about me I can see some kids saying how they shouldn't have to help this who have less...its sad but there are likely kids in the school with that mindset and that is scarier then what the staff has termed last weeks food riot.

@ Special Ed - GREAT MOVIE!

@ Prom - they cant be that effing stupid, can they? LoLz

@ humility - that's pretty sad alright - hopefully, most students will look at all this as a learning expereince and maybe they will be more understanding of the perspective of FLEX students in general after this. I'm praying for that, at least.

This is a message from West Springfield High School. (Sent Tuesday May 17th.)

Update from last Thursday

We want to begin by thanking everyone who has been so supportive of us during the aftermath of our extremely disruptive and dangerous food fight in the cafeteria on Thursday, May 12, 2011. We acknowledge and share your concerns and are extremely optimistic about our plan to move forward as a school and a community.

The following are just some of the facts of Thursday’s food fight:
• 100+ active participants
• 800+ students in C lunch
• It was “raining food” from one end of the cafeteria to the other
• Food thrown included cafeteria lunches as well as items such as raw eggs brought from home
• Partially filled water bottles were also thrown
• Tables and chairs were flipped
• 600+ students were running in a mass exodus, many of them tripping, slipping, and falling
• Special needs students sitting in the middle were traumatized
• A fire alarm was pulled by a student in another part of the building which contributed to the chaos and anxiety
• In the aftermath, students and custodians worked more than eight hours cleaning and sanitizing the cafeteria

Our decision to put all activities “on hold” for the seniors, was done for one and only one reason—safety and security. Our highest obligation to each member of the West Springfield High School community is to provide a safe and secure environment for student learning to take place. We must ensure that daily school activities as well as special events are conducted in an appropriate manner within that safe and secure environment.

After gathering input from students, staff, security, and a representation from the community, we have decided to take the actions outlined below. These actions, we believe, address the challenge at hand: Assess an extremely negative incident, evaluate it fairly, respond in unity, and turn it into a positive learning experience for everyone.

On Saturday, June 4th, we will hold a Community Service Day. Students who participated in this food fight, students who knowingly stayed as willing witnesses, and students who left their classes to go the cafeteria for the food fight are all expected to attend this community service day at WSHS. Those unable to participate on June 4th may complete their community service preparing food for the homeless at organizations such as ECHO or running in a charity race like Race for the Cure (that same morning). Students are also expected to bring at least two of their favorite canned food items to be donated to ECHO’s food bank. You may follow the following links: http://echo-inc.org/Donate/Needs.htm and http://echo-inc.org/Donate/12MonthNeeds.htm.

Students from C Lunch who participate in both the food donation and the community service will once again be eligible for the senior picnic, trip, and prom end-of-year activities that were put on hold on Thursday. That said, some individual students depending on their role, can and will be held out of some of these activities as a consequence.

Not only was this incident extremely wasteful of food, but the food fight and its aftermath cost custodians extra time and labor, blemished our image in the community, and disappointed many of us in each other. We believe our Community Service Day and other community service actions, rather than being strictly or overly punitive, will instead allow students to put their collective efforts into beautification of our school and a much more positive and appropriate use of food. Although we have designed these service opportunities specifically for C Lunch students who chose to engage in or stay around to witness the food fight, all students are welcome and encouraged to participate, again as a sign of our school responding in unity. More details will be coming out from the school in the very near future.

The incident on Thursday is not representative of our school. Friday night’s 2nd Annual Relay for Life was! We had over 1000 walkers, including hundreds of students, here walking for 12 hours on behalf of the American Cancer Society. This year’s Relay raised over $140,000, meaning that over the past two years we have raised over $300,000 as a school and community. That type of activity is what makes WSHS a great school! Moreover, we refuse to let the incident last Thursday define our school, this school year, or the Class of 2011. We have much more to offer, and we believe that engaging in this type of school or community service will not only show the positive side of our school and students but will also help our school community heal. We believe this will allow students to once again do their P.A.R.T. for WSHS!

You shouldn't make assumptions about fcps bus drivers, especially the old white guys. Many of them are retired from very successful careers and only drive buses to get out of the house.

When I was driving, I personally knew a retired Air Force Lt. General, a retired United Airlines 747 captain, a retired Federal bank examiner, a retired FBI agent driving school buses. These guys could buy and sell your mommy and daddy, so don't feel too sorry for them.

I don't fall into the above category, I'm retired from Va State Police and my pension doesn't quite cut it, so I have to work. Driving a bus was fun at the beginning, but it got old after a while. I'm now working in the security dept of a major Interstate trucking company.

And don't tell me I didn't witness punks harrassing LD/ED kids. Granted I never drove at WSHS, but I find it hard to believe that WSHS punks are any smarter than Chantilly punks, Oakton punks or Madison punks.
