Routing problems at this server's hosting provider caused a total outage between 9:30am and 6:00pm today (9/27/07).
Because of the extreme incompetence of this hosting provider, I have been forced to (temporarily?) change the IP address of this server from "209.249.226.204" to "209.249.176.70" in order to have at least some (limited) connectivity.
This was not a hack or any other attempt to intentionally disrupt this server.
Because of the IP address change most computers/ISPs will still have the old IP address cached and will still be unable to access this site. Only "fresh" hosts will currently be able to access this website.
If anyone knows of a good local co-location provider for a single 4U server offering 1Mbps sustained traffic I would really appreciate it.
Today has made it very clear that I need to change hosting providers immediately.
More information will follow soon.
Update, 9/27 11:00pm: The changes made to DNS have propagated throughout most of the internet, but not the couple ISPs that are most popular in Fairfax County. Most notably, Cox users in Fairfax County are still unable to get to this site.
Also, this server may have a new permanent home tomorrow which may result in more downtime. Details will follow as I figure them out.
To quell any fears, this site/server will never go away. This server does many more things for me than just this site and is vital for me to always have. The small fee it costs me to host this server is a drop in the bucket to the benefits it brings. Just FYI.
Update, 9/28 5:50pm: Due to some emergency circumstances this server will need to go down again at 7:00pm for a few hours while it is moved to its new permanent home at the Equinix facility in Ashburn, VA.
Unforunately, this will once again entail an IP address change which will take some time to propagate throughout the internet. If you have any questions I have set up an off-site email account for use during the transition:
fairfaxunderground@gmail.com
This outage should last a maximum of 2 hours.
Update, 9/28 9:50pm: This server now has a new home with "Pull the Plug Technologies" at the Equinix datacenter in Ashburn. The new IP address of this server is 209.9.228.66.
Before the move, this server had not been restarted for well over a year. I'd ask that you please explore all areas of this site and report to me if you find anything that's not working. Thanks everyone!
For the *nix nerds out there, it hurt me a lot to ruin this streak:
[cary@langsam 6:33pm:~>] uptime
18:33:38 up 597 days, 16:06, 6 users, load average: 0.24, 0.23, 0.13
Update, 9/30 2:25am:
All day yesterday (9/29) there were some continuing intermittent routing problems. These problems affected only certain ISPs. Most notably Cox Communications was affected. These issues have now been resolved. There should no longer be trouble with any aspects of the site. If something's not working please let me know.
cary@fairfaxunderground.com Thanks.
