Chris Warren and Andy Heck also played basketball at Robinson and WTW, respectively.

I forget the tournament, but Chris made a shot to defeat the Cavs and to dash their hopes to return to state for the first time since 1966.

In 1984-85, Red Jenkins had a tremendous team featuring Heck and Greg Kimball. The least talented member of the squad played at Duke. Both played only football after high school. Heck went onto Notre Dame and Kimmball went to William & Mary. I think both were captains, but I could be wrong about that.

No the least talented player was Steve Rye and he went to American..it helped he was 6'9" but weighed 160. George Burgin, on the other hand, was 7'1" or some ungodly height and he went to Duke. He had a tad bit more talent then Rye....

I do remember watching Warren dunk over Heck at a game at WTW. Heck had about 4" on Warren but they both probably weighed about 220-230lbs.

Red had some good players.

One is now the men's coach at Harvard.

You probably know who he is.

Are you referring to the former Michigan coach?

Red was a great HS coach, and had the talent to take teams deep in the playoffs.

This is veering off topic from the original post, though.

Yes, these posts did veer off topic.

Yes, I am referring to Tommy Amaker. I met his mother once and had a long conversation with her. She said that they were related to James Lee (the black man who owned much of the land on Annandale Road in Falls Church. She also had reason to believe that James Lee was part of the family of Robert E. Lee (not sure of the dynamics there) and you know what that means.

Red Jenkins certainly did have some talented players. I don't know if it is a knock on Red or his players, but they never put it together. Look at the team on which Heck and Kimball played. The two best players on the team never played a minute of college basketball. The least talented player (I am sticking with Bergin, a good guy by all accounts) got a full ride to ACC powerhouse Duke. There were a few others -forget the name of the other guard besides Kimball- who never played a minute of college basketball and they could have.

Heck had plenty of options to play college hoops. I was at Woodson his senior year and played basketball (not on the varsity) and remember getting dressed for a game in the locker room and there was a letter from San Diego State for him. I remember it clearly because it started off with "The Age of the Cage is over" refering to the fact that Michael Cage had graduated. The guard you're thinking of was Jim V...something Italian.

Where I used to spend some time in Petersburg, VA, they had Moses Malone (Was in the same graduating class as my Aunt, who knew him). VA as a whole has some serious bball talent.

If we are talking HOOPS here, then the greatest H.S. and college player of all time (no, not Lew Alcindor) comes from the great state of VA. Big Ralph Sampson was a 4 time All American and went to Harrisonburg H.S. before going to UVA. He was part of the twin towers with Olajuwon until he fizzled out.

Sampson hurt his back in a fall in a playoff game against the Celtics and that is what led to his fizzling out.

That accelerated his "fizzling out", but there were numerous reasons for it. Some of them started in college, where he had shit for a coach. He never bulked up enough to be as dominant as he could have been in the NBA. Being one of the twin towers was not good for his career. The last thing a 7'4" center should want is to share the spotlight with another 7' center who had already established himself as a dominant big-man.

Sievers attended the University of Maryland and ironically, wasn't the best tight end. John Tice was also there during that time, and he had a better NFL career than Sievers did. Perhaps even more ironically was that former Vikings Coach Mike Tice was the quarterback for Marylan then, and he also had a better NFL career than Sievers did. And he played tight end in the NFL.

Charlie Garner might be the most accomplished one from FFX, at least in the 80's 90's and 2000's.

7000 rushing yards, 3700 recieving yards. 1 probowl. 1 superbowl appearance. One of the best small running backs to ever play in the NFL.

"Mike Causin-W. Spfd. practice squad, but plated in some pre-season games."

Mike Caussin, lettered three yrs at West Springfield playing WR. Then: full ride at JMU playing WR, free agent signed to Jaguars practice squad as a TE, then Bills practice squad, activated mid 2011 season by the Bills, played a few games, now on IR.

Mike Bragg, punter, Skins. JEB Stuart in the '60's.

Chris Warren might have been one of the all time greats, set a pro-bowl rushing record.

6'3", 230 Lbs, ran a sub 4.4 forty, unfortunately, failed out of UVa, then went to Ferrum, and played with some so-so NFL teams.

As a high schooler, USC thought of him as the next great USC tailback.

Nickname was "smooth", or, smoooov...cause he was so damn...

Could have been a Herschel Walker type talent, but nonetheless still was a pretty damn good player.

Staying in the basketball vein... I was Red Jenkins' assistant coach during the mid 80's... he was an awesome HS coach. It was always pretty cool when Morgan Wooten (DeMatha) would 'stop by' and when Red would wax on with Tommy Amaker, Pete Holbert, or Red Auerbach stories. I was coaching the year you all mentioned, 1984 .... George Burgin, Steve Rye, Andy Heck, Greg Kimball, and Jim Bartelloni. Truly an awesome team...only to be stopped by Chris Warren and the Rams in RegionalFinal. If I remember, Warren hit a jumper to win it at the end. Two stories: our preseason tournament was in Myrtle Beach, the Beach Ball Classic. Andy Heck was our entry in the dunk contest over George and Steve. He pulled off this dunk called the 'Gorilla Snare' ..where he grabs the bottom of the backboard, swings like a gorilla under the rim and jams it on the other side. The place went nuts and I think he finished second to some guy's 'peek-a-boo' dunk. Michael Irvin sticks in my head for some reason. Second story is about Jim Bartelloni, the guard no one could remember.... we were practicing one day, having the guards feed the big men and Jimbo was getting pi**ed off. Seems he thought the big guys always bricked or lost the ball inside. He complained to Red and Red stopped practice, cleared the floor and got one of the big guys, Burgin, I believe to stand in the lane. Red ordered Bartelloni to feed him 10 balls and we would keep track of the makes. Jimbo feeds him 10 and he makes 8. Red is in his glory...80% shooting is pretty good. Now Red tell Jimbo to fan around the top of the key and he would feed him jumpers. Well, Jim was a REAL competitor, he walks back to where Kimball and I are standing between the circles and says... 'Watch this'... proceeds to hit 10 out of 10 and we are all on the floor. Red says 'anyone can get lucky' and tells the guys to go the hell home. True story. @Your Daddy, do you know where Coach Jeff Knoche is these days? He was your JV coach, correct?

I think Rocky Belk once ran a wind-aided 9.46 in the 100 yard dash at the Dogwood Relays ~ at UVA perhaps.
