Not in a traffic kind of way, but I did notice the air in Fairfax being unusually heavy with a feeling of oppression and Socialism wafting in the breeze.

I didn't know anything about it until I read this post. Where was
this "Town Hall"? Was it open to the public or held in a gated community
with only Dems with connections are invited?

Socialism is not the same thing as Communism. I trust you can research and learn the difference.

I almost wish it had been Hillary Clinton who had won the Democratic nomination instead. Disappointment with Obama was inevitable.

Doesn't matter. Obama's failures have exacerbated the economy, and I wish he'd stay at the WH instead of coming out here to pollute our fine air with his nasty rhetoric.

And since Cuba IS a socialist state, what, exactly, is your point?

Article I just googled said one million....20% of the work force. WOW, hope we don't get our next wave of illegal immigrants....

But really that's O.K. it's the jobs we don't want, right???

Wrong! They are the jobs we REFUSE to do.

Not exactly "refuse to do." It's more like now you can't send your teenager to work at the McDonalds on Richmond Highway because they'd be surrounded by hostile people who barely speak English. The quality of the work environment has become so bad that most middle class American teens cannot do those jobs anymore. Less than 20 years ago, even upper middle class suburban teens were able to take those jobs and their parents felt like they were safe while at work. Not anymore.

Often times, though, the lines between the two do become blurry.

The best examples of the two are the NAZIs vs. the Soviets. The former were Socialists, while the latter were Communists. They both hated each other as well.

Btw, I found it ironic that Obama held his backyard brouhaha at what appeared to be a rather affluent residence, yet he was speaking about helping the middle class.

Actually they were a socialist state turned totalitarian communist state in 1959. My point was it (socialism, communism) didn't work. One could argue that it may be working well for N. Korea and China right now, but eventually the people will grow tired of tyranny and grow balls enough to revolt and fuck things up.

The President goes to a PRIVATE home in MANTUA to tell the nation that we can't afford to not raise taxes?

Isn't Mantua the home of Gerry Connolly?

Wasn't Gerry Connolly standing next to him?

Someone should post a screen capture of that CNN page, because right next to Obama pushing for cancelling the tax cuts is the headline:

"Connolly Says Extend Tax Cuts for Now"

WE CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP. No one would believe it.

The presence of Gerry Connolly at the "middle class" backyard townhall in Mantua was curiously kept low profile.

Obama is not a "people's person." He is a person for the political Machiavellis who work behind the scenes. As much as people LOVE to hate on George W Bush, he connected to regular Americans far more than Obama can. Obama comes off as more pampered/privileged. You could never see him out driving a truck or doing manual labor.

Who the hell strives to become one of these "regular Americans"? Like you want to grow up in a world where you can use your poor communication skills and barely adequate high school education to shovel dirt and dig ditches all day for substandard wages? "Regular Americans" like that shouldn't be representing this country at all. Just look what that Joe The Plumber dumbass did for the McCain campaign.

Who says someone who knows how to work with their hands has poor communication skills? The so-called "intellectuals" here who cannot do any of their house maintenance, but must pay the plumber/mower/housecleaner, etc. are really unable to survive outside of their little narrow-minded bubble.

It is a false notion that everyone with practical skills has no education.

For those of you who think that hard work, manual labor and communiction skills are mutually exclusive I'd suggest you try expanding your realm a little. Try reading Studs Terkel or Eric Hoffer.

I recall reading about a small college president who spent a couple of weeks every year working on a trash truck, just to keep himself grounded. Remember..."ignorance plus ego equals arrogance" and arrogance is not in short supply.

I guess the "middle class" was redefined yesterday. This "middle class" house that Obama visited was purchased in 1997 for $323K and is currently, even after the housing downturn, assessed at more than $712K.

I'd love to see the press run with the explanation of how having almost $400K in equity still qualifies as middle class. Or if there isn't ~$400K in equity remaining, the Republicans are to blame.

Meeper, the world does not revolve around northern Virginia/DC values. I know this must come as a shock to you, but it's true.

Believe it or not, some people with college educations know how to mow their lawn (or have their teens do the job), change the oil in the car, and do basic plumbing/repair work in the house. And we do it because we don't hold ourselves above such tasks.

Whoa. Obama comes to Mantua to support Connolly. Obama says we can't extend tax cuts. Connolly says he changed his view and now supports extending tax cuts for one year so he can be reelected. They do this while standing next to each other smiling.

I live in Mantua, I think it's a pretty representative neighborhood of the county. Mostly government workers really and yes, there are plenty of houses that are practically falling down in the neighborhood. Just drive up and down Barkley. I drove home to pick up lunch yesterday afternoon, there were many police officers but was not delayed or inconvenienced in any way
