Shooting Ranges

In case anyone will find it useful, I added a page on the wiki about public shooting ranges in the area, with links.

For the record, that would be Bull Run Shooting Center in Centreville, the NRA Range in Fairfax, Gilbert Range in Springfield, and Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly. Check out the page if you're interested, and add any more you know of!

I shoot at the NRA range and it is indeed very nice.

Also, I heard that Shooters' Paradise in Manassas had a fire and closed. Is that rue?

Yes they burned down due to non-gun related fire. They plan to rebuild however so expect to see them back within the next year or so. And as a result, the NRA range suddenly became very popular due to lack of alternatives.

The next closest (after Clarkbrothers) free outdoor ranges in Virginia are over two hours away in Staunton:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/recreation/shooting_ranges/
I was unable to find anything closer (and still free) in MD, PA, or DE but that doesnt mean they dont exist. There are, of course, private clubs or organizations with outdoor ranges but I was only interested in free ranges when I was doing my research.

I took my CCW class at Blue Ridge but did not shoot there. I have never been to Gilberts.

I'm thinking about buying my first gun as a new weekend hobby.
I'm leaning towards a shotgun or a rifle. Are shooting ranges only for handguns?

What's the name of the shotgun from Terminator 2?

Are there woods where you can go shoot at bottles/cans?

There's also the Fairfax Rod & Gun Club, but that's a private club, not open.

Take an NRA class, it'll tell you if you actually want one and what to get. Some ranges, as you can tell from the link, are handguns only, some allow anything. the shotgun from T2 is a SPAS 12 and will run you about $1,000. Generally, you cannot discharge a firearm outdoors in FFX county so no, you can't shoot in the woods.

If you're willing to go as far as Clark Brothers, there's Shady Grove outside Remington for shotgun sports.

Oh - the shotgun from Terminator 2 is a Winchester "Hero", a modified 1887 Winchester single-shot, and from the looks of it may not be legal (as in sawed-off). Besides, to accommodate the cool-looking "spin" to reload, the trigger guard is mostly removed - bad idea, unless you want a lot of accidental discharges.

It can't be a single-shot if it's reloaded by spinning, it would have to be a lever-action repeater. Of course there are single-shot lever-actuated guns, and they might be able to pretend one was a repeater in a movie. In any case, trying to work a shotgun or rifle that way will get you permanently expelled from any shooting range.

Oh yeah, that one. I meant the one at the end in the foundry, nevermind. Arnold also used it in T1.

Oh hell yeah the Shottie from Jurassic Park! thats sweetness there in the pump catagory. Clarks Bro's is a fun place, especially for Trap/skeet shooting...DO IT YOURSELF :)-

You'd probably want an over-and-under or autoloader for clay sports - pumps are no good; the reload cycle time takes too long and pulls you too far off target, especially on doubles and egg-drops.

However, nothing says "deterrence" quite like the "ka-chuck" of a pump.... no mistaking that sound for anything else.

Hahha I'd love to see someone doing that at a range

those ranges must be operated by a bunch of tightwad liberals.

If you criminalize spin-reload sawed-off shotguns, only criminals will have spin-reload sawed-off shotguns.

If you legalize rape, there will be no more rapists.

That is not correct. If you legalize rape, there will still be rapists. They just won't be criminals anymore. If you were trying to make an analogy with what Peace wrote, you missed the mark. Rape by definition violates the rights of the victim. Simply owning a spin-reload sawed-off shotgun (which I don't really agree with or encourage myself) violates no one but is probably quite useful in addressing the problem posed by an attacking rapist.
