The returning Hayfield players have to understand that their team doesn’t suck anymore, they are going to be coached a lot harder and have to become tougher. Violating FCPS policy? Do go on…

How is W-L going to look next year considering they went 9-2 which was an historic season for them? As well as Yorktown, Westfield, Centerville etc

My thoughts:

W-L: Built their record against weak opposition - which showed when they were promptly crushed by Westfield in the first round of the playoffs. If I am not mistaken, there had a lot of seniors so it is probably back to their usual this season.

Yorktown: Played like a dark horse at the end of the season and sprang a huge upset on South Lakes but then fell to Westfield in a competitive game. I think they were running on a high note to get as far as they did. Not sure what the have coming back.

Westfield: Very solid at the skill positions and a senior laden secondary coming back, but the lines are an unknown. Add in that they have a new coach and we have to see what happens. If Madison does not reload, I see either Westfield or Madison as potential regional finalists.

Centreville: Extremely young and small last year so another year of maturation will help them climb back to respectability, but they are still going to be middle of the pack.

Others-As mentioned above, both Madison and South County looked sharp in the 7v7 at South County over the past few weeks. The Madison QB and RB will carry them a long way. I think both teams will be solid again this fall and should make good playoff runs. The biggest question is what happens with Hayfield now that Overton has moved his football factory from Freedom to Hayfield. They become automatically a regional and state level threat if all the alleged transfers are there this fall. And as with Madison, an All State RB will win a lot of games, especially in the National district. Sucks for a lot of the Hayfield kids who stuck with the team the past 2-3 years since most of them are not going to play now. Then their is the transfer legality question, but we all know nothing will be done to truly dig into that one.

Continued from the above post: We all know kids transfer all the time. Most do so legitimately and follow the rules. But how many parents really have the money to move closer to Washington DC with the higher prices of homes and rents? Or want to uproot other family members and leave long term family friends just for a year or two of high school football? Some certainly do possess the means to move but with so many alleged transfers I think that extremely unlikely that they all have the capability and desire. Also, if a kid is looking to play college ball and is good enough it really does not matter who they play for-college coaches will find you.

We’ve talked extensively about Overton cheating or violating rules. Now that we’ve basically placed judgement and conviction on Hayfield, who’s ready to talk about the other schools and coaches that do the exact same thing?
- if transfers that come to your school for a sport is a bad thing, I’m sure that doesn’t just apply negatively only at Hayfield. Do we want to discuss Lake Braddock, Fairfax and South County transfers over the last few years including this upcoming season.
- are there any other programs that have violated ‘FCPS Policy’ or we just want to continue to focus on Overton

Very good point about PWC kids moving to Fairfax and the price of housing being higher. I’ve heard that Hayfield has gotten quite a few private school transfer who legitimately live in the district and transferred in with the coach change

The focus on Overton is a little ridiculous. Mickey Thompson, Kyle Simmons, Pannoni from South County, Henderson at various schools, my guess is 70% of coaches break the rules in some way but Overton is just more flashy with it

THANK YOU!!! Like I said before! Westfield, Centreville, even Chantilly in the day! They ALL prospered off of players moving up Route 28 into FFX and it’s been NO PROBLEM!! Soon as Overton is getting ready to do the same on the other side it’s the end of the world! Cry me a river! Pannoni gotta be pissed he can’t sneak in any more Lake Ridge kids!!

Comparing what Overton is doing at Hayfield to what other schools have done or are doing is apples and oranges. Some may have turned a blind eye to a kid or two over a multiple year span, but Overton is bringing in 25+ kids and is actively involved in trying to deceive the county with bogus addresses. He is also actively pushing current kids out of Hayfield. They have the text messages and I’ll be shocked if he makes it to August.

My guess is Overton, AD, principal, DSS, and school registar are all going down. Unfortunately, some will be collateral damage because of a few idiots.

If the coach did what was alleged a few posts earlier, he will be relieved of his duties and the DSA, Principal, etc. will be safe.

I'm gonna have to call a bit of bs here. There is no comparison between what those schools did and what Overton is doing. I think in Simmons entire 13 years at Westfield there was only 2 or maybe 3 players transfer that had played football at another school.

Ok let me help everyone understand, this will more than likely be the only year that THIS MANY transfers will come from out of the area. After that it will likely go back to what he did at Freedom, which was getting the most athletic kids to transfer in before they are varsity players… kind of like the previously mentioned schools who always seemed to have decent parts that moved in before their freshman year… it’s not as hard as you may think to spot the ones that are going to be real players

Not hard to understand really, it’s well known that Townhomes/Appts in Centreville/Chantilly are close enough in price for parents to invest in their kid’s future for 4 years at one of the big FFX programs, been done for years and years because they couldn’t afford to move into Battlefield’s Haymarket and Dominion Valley area… On the Eastern side of things PWC USED to have powerhouses in the 90s and 00s-10s that kept elite kids away until SoCo opened up… Over the past 5-8 years Eastern PWC kids have wanted to play for Overton so they did at Freedom, now they will move here and start collecting wins… Happy for East Fairfax

As for Westfield transfers, their transfers of consequence have been very few over the past 10-15 years and virtually all established legitimate residences in the school's zone. There is one that might be questionable. Your bias against Simmons for being a winning coach is showing.

Simmons is a great coach! I say that sincerely! BUT he’s even better when he gets 2-3 elite athletes to develop as freshman from the west PWC area! Hey, how successful has Simmons been since Patriot has gained momentum with Finnerty or since Gainesville opened??

I don’t follow Lake Braddock too closely but I do know they won their region last and got blown out by some Richmond team. That’s about as good as any team in Fairfax is doing these days. The school is fucking enormous so again, 100 kids showing up for 7 on 7 doesn’t mean too much. I heard they do have another stud QB too. Not sure what passed by means. Maybe they’d get respect if they ever beat south county lol

You must not realize that 2 Hayfield kids have already received their first D1 offers since Overton took over.

Do you really believe Overton got those kids their offers?? Those kids earned those offers and would have gotten them no matter who the coach was. Plus the previous staff is one the who developed them!!

True the previous staff did develop them but Overton brings more attention to the program from college coaches cuz of his connections and prior success, I don’t think those kids get those offers under the former staff, especially in the spring

Because during the vetting process they’ve found many illegal actions that were listed previously. Only reason he hasn’t been fired already is because he’s getting cover from above. I hate to break it to you but you are supporting a guilty party.

Being legally cleared to transfer on paper is easy. Actually following through and living in the district at the address provided is completely different.

Outside of Madison, 6D is gonna be a weak group. Westfield at #2 with no OL and trying to run a wing T O isn't a good recipe.

90% of this blog is about Hayfield and Overton. How do you live with yourself giving a man so much power. Yahll worrying about kids and addresses and it seems they live rent free in your heads with the hate. The Army just moved me and my family to Belvoir. My neighbor told me about this site as a space to understand Fairfax county football and determine where to send my sons to play. Reading these comments seem like Hayfield is the place to develop their skills and live their dreams. Definitely considered south county as my neighbor but Yahll enlightened us with the treachery in these comments.

This is not the space to understand Fairfax County football, unfortunately. You can glean some information but until you understand how this site "works" and what is posted you should be careful in using it to select which school your son attends if football is the main reason. There are only a handful of perennially good football teams in NOVA and there are certainly haves and have nots-the four districts are vastly different in their level of play.

This site has only a few knowledgeable posters. I suggest you find the information here that is posted weekly by a few people who handicap the games weekly once the season starts and look at that. You can also get similar information from a site call Virginia Preps (statewide coverage, and much, much better) but the D6 board isn't heavily followed. As for Overton, he has been very successful but it is how he has done it that irks most people.

PS Retired Army, also worked at Ft Belvoir for many years as MIL and CIV. Welcome.

I will say if your son also plays basketball, Hayfield would be the best fit and they do it the right way

Good point, there’s a handful of people on this forum who contribute. The guy who has been doing the weekly spreads for years is great and a few others are also valuable… Tbh I think some people that post in here are coaches…

Not looking good for those saying he isn’t running the wing T. Hearing all they’ve done at camp this week is work wing T run game and concepts. But let’s keep believing the new style of O lie.

Thought it was hilarious when people were acting like he was going to modernize his style bc of “athletes”, this isn’t the 2000s or 2010s as a matter of fact I’m willing to bet one of the reasons they landed on Vossler was the fact they wanted a guy that could maximize the team with the few ELITE athletes they have.

I agree it was comical that people thought he'd change. However, I disagree the Wing T will maximize the teams talent. Probably will just lead to a drain of talent and them going elsewhere.

5-5 is a real possibility but would guess 6-7 regular season wins based on previous staff player development. Patriot, LB, Madison, Chantilly, Centreville, and South Lakes all could beat them.

My son plays for west Springfield and they had 7v7 at Thomas Jefferson over the weekend.I did get a chance to see a team called PME wearing green and these kids were coaches up.From the information I got they loss the first 3 games then went on to win the tournament. My son told me they did it without any of they’re upper class men I guess Seniors and Jrs they all wanted to meet the RB. They actually beat the team we loss to to win the ship and from what I saw they are well coached we couldn’t figure out how to line up against a Wing T in 7v7 they didn’t even struggle . I say that to say I think some coaches are worried because these guys really know what they’re doing just my two cents was a great Saturday and we had fun my son even said he would love to be coached by those guys which made me think are coaches actually teaching our kids to be their best or trying to satisfy us as parents .

You are partially correct about Vossler implementing the Wing T. The formations Westfield will use will look a lot like what has historically been used, but the blocking schemes will change to more like those used in the Wing T (no more zone blocking, I am told). All of this is designed to speed up the pace of play. I cannot complain about that since I don't know how many times I felt the play was too slow in developing. We will see.

West Springfield losing to rising freshmen/sophomore team is something else, assuming your kid is a varsity player

We had two teams this weekend my son plays Varsity, we didn’t play them . We lost to a D.C Team running a wing T. From what my son says the kids were Hayfield kids he saw playing last year just better coached.

Sounds like a new Westfield coach coming here to defend lying about not running the wing T.

A Fairfax county team (Hayfield) will be in contention playing with kids from everywhere except Fairfax county. Overton and his staff are frauds.

Really sad whats happened at justice/jeb. It was only a few years ago that the program was getting 5,6,7,8 wins a season. Complete fall off especially after covid. Not many kids coming out to play football despite the large student population.

Someone posted something about Justice earlier in the thread, they have some nice houses but I’m sure all those kids go to private school and Justice is left with the foreigners from Skyline Towers who don’t play football

They had a Qb who was slinging it and a couple defensive players who were playing extremely aggressive against good WR groups. They should be pretty solid and it didn’t really look like they had everyone with them.

You Freedom guys are so insecure, even though you have two state championships you would still come on here, and bash fcps coaches. Shit coaches who recruit kids doesn’t make you a good coach. Sadly, your own kids will be screwed over and lose their eligibilty.

This is an incredibly scathing article. How do these men keep jobs after something like this is released? If even a few of the allegations are true how can they be allowed to compete in the fall?

Youre exactly right. Almost all the families that can afford it send their kids to oconnell, gonzaga, potomac, etc from the justice district. There are some nice neighborhoods but the school is so bad they go to private schools instead. JEB might be at least respectable if those students enrolled and football (athletics in general) had proper turnout. A tragedy imo.

Overton has been coaching in the fashion for a long time and has been investigated before. I suspect he’ll get away with it…again. Even though he shouldnt. That article reads like an indictment.

Everyone involved in that article should be embarrassed, centered around a mothers complaints who is upset that the standards were changing for her son to play football, just like the rest of the “sources” that were interviewed… Nothing in that article is new nor is any of it going to lead to any firings or consequential suspensions, the only difference is of course FFX county money has so much power the complainers convinced 2 writers to waste their time on it…. West Springfield is still on the clock, we will see if the mentioned transfer even sees the field

If you read that article and you are on board with that type of behavior, you belong nowhere near student athletes In Fairfax County, the mistreatment of players and circumvention of the rules are awful lessons to teach our young kids. I hope it proves to be in accurate, but there is smoke there is usually fire. These guys need to go back to Prince William county.

I think the true misunderstanding here stems from a lot of people in Fairfax having such a closed lens, you guys barely play OOD games outside of Fairfax you guys act like places like Stafford and Woodbridge are worlds away, the funniest part of that article was the “source” who said… “ This is the biggest HS recruiting scandal in the history of our state,” adding, “It’s blatant cheating.” Lolllllll biggest recruiting scandal? Please check in to the 757 or Richmond where they openly create Pics to celebrate players transferring in to their schools every spring… I agree there likely won’t be much from this than discussing the article itself

I’m just confused at all the pushback, what exactly has the eastern side of this county won recently in football other than that stacked SoCo team?? Probably means the status quo fucking sucked at developing our kids not only in high school but in terms of getting them ready for that next level

The article makes it seem charging an activity fee is illegal. It’s actual pretty common. Fairfax County only pays for refs and transportation to games, everything else including equipment is the teams responsibility. However all the cash floating around does raise red flags.

They shouldn’t even make it to the season at this point. It’s obvious that anyone on here defending the bullshit is tied to the bullshitters. These scumbags are clearly scared of competition and can’t get a private school job because of how they operate. Football has been embarrassing enough in this area for a while now. Now we have a staff proudly proclaiming “we can’t coach or win without a roster full of 3 and 4 star recruits”. Which of you fools are going to argue with this? lol pathetic.

So as the article reads:
- Dorsey said her son transferred to South County High School in Lorton.
- another player, slated to now transfer to West Springfield High School.

So an entire article about transfers but it’s ok that 2 players (probably more) are transferring to other schools for reasons clearly because they are unhappy with there football situation.

The article details fundraisers (totally legal), and funds asked for from parents detailing exactly what they are for…… and there’s a problem with that? They even state that Overton made 29k and the fundraising source made 3k, I’m not a genius but sounds accurate.

It sounds like this reporter ran with a lot of information from a very emotional parent without even attempting to validate.

FYI- a bit of factual information, soco has had 20+ football transfer over the last 2 years, and nobody cares, including at a minimum 1 new transfer this season per this article.

A common tactic of guilty people is to accuse others of the the same illegal behavior and say “they did it too”. While it may feel good in the moment you are admitting guilt. Good luck with that defense.

Exactly, you don’t excuse bad behavior by pointing out others bad behavior. Oddly enough there seems to some unscrupulous people who condone Overtons way of conducting his business which is no surprise cuz if you knew how they conducted their business, just two peas in a pod. Even stranger is that Overton doesn’t want their headache sons on his team.

I hate to break it to the loser coaches and gatekeepers of FCPS Football, but a trashy article fueled by a hurt mom won’t be costing Overton a job, on several occasions it simply take the accusations to a comical level… over 30 transfers??? Really lmaoooo, you honestly believe that this staff has the funds to get some van and bus them up and down 95? Lmaoo, I think someone said it earlier but this county is way too guarded and too goofy to shoes, ALL OF THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED AND HANDLED. Lol the moms kid even reached to staff calling his MOTHER out of line lollll this lady even proceeded to sign her SAME KID up for Overtons PME 7v7 team, and there are people who believe he’s gone, I can promise you DO and his staff got a great laugh this morning then they worked like hell with their kids… Hubbys money and Daddy’s money can do so much #Hayfieldby50

The guy wasn’t even allowed in the building at freedom because he took money from the program. He wins his 1st ring, which is amazing, and the county gives him a peace prize. So now freedom can’t fire him like they wanted. The guys been doing it for years. Takes money from his HS players, his PME org, to pay his salary. Idk why he decides to stay in public school, but we know where the big time players live. And it ain’t in Alexandria. Too bad for the players who followed their coach. Will end up losing a year of eligibility for lying about where they lived. You’d think you’d try and protect the kids. Dude just wants to be Deion so bad. Oh well.

And to comment on 30 transfers, just check Twitter. The whole freedom team changed their bios to hayfield. Not hard to find at least 20. Plus the St. John’s QB. But hey, we are the ones making shit up.

Recruiting sadly has been going on forever at certain programs. Look at Madison HS baseball and Coach Pudge. They have been recruiting for 25+ years, raiding the best baseball talent from Great Falls and Reston. Pudge and Madison baseball are one of the dirtiest programs imaginable with the way He cheats.

As for Overton, he won’t last more than a year. He really should just coach at a WCAC school and recruit whoever he wants.

Coaches definitely post here. Jason Rowley and Coach guff (fat guy) from Oakton used to post here all the time. I know this because they told us they use it for info, etc.

Yes, he has arthritis of the hand from putting on and taking off his championship rings every day. They are heavy, but necessary burden to carry around to show everyone who’s boss. Not all disabilities are visible, please don’t judge.

Overton is quite possibly both a good coach/leader, but also a rule breaker. I do not deny the fact that the kids and families that have played for him for years truly love and respect all that he has done for their children. Overton has proven he can coach and will take care of his guys. What this group fails to realize is that he breaks the rules in order to accomplish this and in doing so leaves a path of destruction that hurts other kids. In this off-season alone his actions have decimated the Freedom HS program, lead 4-5 former Hayfield players to quit or change schools, and may lead to 20+ kids loosing their eligibility. Why not just coach the kids you had at Hayfield or stay at Freedom where the kids were already enrolled. Trying to have it both ways is not putting kids first. Let’s not forget that Freedom had to forfeit several games during the Covid spring season due to an ineligible player, which kept them out of the playoffs. There is a pattern here. Also, what kind of adult texts a teenager and tells them “Trust is like a mirror, once it’s broken it can’t be fixed.” That is a threat and is fireable by itself. We wouldn’t accept that from any other school employee.

Lots of very good points made here. I just hope when the FCPS "investigation" ends we get to know what was really discovered, proven, or turned out to be a false accusation-and not have it hidden by "confidentiality".

I believe the original poster put it best: both things can be true. Overton can be a good coach and still be breaking the rules. This is a really nuanced conversation that needs to be had.

First, I think a lot of this comes from FCPS established coaches who have been doing this on a smaller scale and are now really upset, possibly out of jealousy. I also think race plays a part in this as well.

The argument from Overton's defenders that everyone else is cheating and they are just doing what private schools do isn't entirely accurate. Not everyone is cheating, and not nearly to the degree he allegedly is. Yes, private schools recruit like crazy, but they operate within their own rules (which are basically non-existent). In contrast, public schools that cheat have administrators who at least look the other way. However, some schools have athletic directors and administrators who won’t turn a blind eye and will enforce the rules.

When you have a school that openly allows you to bring in anyone you want, it's no surprise there's a lot of backlash. Some people suggest that if Overton wants to operate in the way he allegedly is, he should just go to a private school. But again, I think race might play a role in this too. Some schools may not want a coach of his background, which is unfortunate because he has shown he can coach, recruit, and get players noticed. Yet, there seem to be gatekeepers keeping him out.

After watching the news clip, I think the one parent who thought they were supporting Overton may actually cause a big problem for Hayfield. She mentioned that Overton told her they only have seven transfers coming in. At a minimum, this suggests illegal contact with a student. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're not allowed to contact a student who is not enrolled at your school. How would a coach know he has transfers coming in if he had no prior contact?

Just my 2 cents. I'm still skeptical anything will happen anyway.

If you’re a parent and your child wants to play for a coach that can develop you and help your visibility AND you have the means and financial ability to make it happen would you do it?

My thoughts are over the next few years this will continue to be the case. With that being said how does Overton not get accused of recruiting that kid even tho he didn’t recruit him?

I said that to say, 1) Overton will forever be accused of accusations regardless of the situation. 2) The idea that it’s ok to recruit because other schools do it was not the argument. The argument was to say, the article stated that a kid was transferring to Soco and West Springfield and there was no accusation of either student being recruit yet the story was they were pushed out.

No one is coming after Overton for recruiting. That is no longer an issue the VHSL cares about. What FCPS and VHSL do care about is establishing residency. The kids need to actually live within Hayfield’s boundaries and have vacated their previous residence. If they do that they are free and clear. If they are using false addresses or have actual addresses but have not vacated their prior residence they are ineligible. They are also committing fraud if they do not reside with Fairfax County. Recruiting is not an issue. Player treatment, not following the procedures for handling fundraising, and coaches assisting players with fake addresses are all fireable offenses. If he’s guilty he shouldn’t coach again. The article has enough evidence to suggest he’s got issues with all three areas.
