Hokie Football

I'm not here to hate. That was a great game last night and it could have gone either way. But, to the Hokie fans out there, aren't you tired of losing to top 10 teams? I think VT is like 0-20 under Beamer. And it's not like it's because of poor talent. Last night's loss was, IMO, squarely on the coaching staff. With 5 minutes left, VT gets the ball and undertakes the most perplexing playcalls to run out the game. Instead of trying to kill the clock, or in the alternative, go for the jugular and get a first, they waffled in between. Had they run the clock out and avoided the sidelines, I imagine Boise St. Gets the ball back with 40 second left. Had they gone for the kill early, a first down would have won the game. Just silly.

I didn't watch the whole game, but special teams was terrible and there were a lot of stupid mental errors by the players. Coaching may have been an issue, but I have to think the coaches are smart enough to call plays that catered to their players' strengths. Player execution was a huge problem.

VT football is overrated! You can only go so far recruiting thugs and felons. They were out-coached by a better prepared Boise State team and no amount of excuses (e.g., 22 new players) is going to get Beamer off the hook. At this level you need to recruit players who can make an immediate difference - they had one of the top recruiting classes based on past reputation.

VT is the only school in the ACC without a national championship and it looks like the trophy case purchased by the athletic department for the BCS trophy is going to sit empty for another year.

I have trouble getting wrapped around the axle over Va Tech's alleged thugs and felons when the team they played last night has a 5% graduation rate (for all of its students) in in 4 years and a whopping 26% rate in 6 years. Yet Boise State sure spends the money on football. These graduation rates are so awful that they convey everything that is wrong with Div. 1 college athletics. BSU isn't a school, but a football team with a school attached. I'll take Tech's record of achievement across all endeavors any day.

I watched the game at a local watering hole with some Tech fans. All of the TECH fans admitted that the team caves in the last minutes of a game. Somebody might need to confirm this but one Tech fan said if Tech plays on national TV they almost always lose the game, bet on the other team.

I'll give tech some credit. They came back from a disaster of a first quarter.

I found it interesting that the Tech commercial showed the school grounds, all the great equipment and students being taught. In contrast, the Boise St commercial was a kid throwing a paper airplane in a stadium and then the stadium filling with people to watch a game and students at the game.

I agree with the above poster that a student on a college team should have to take regular classes, not basket weaving. Give the team with the best grade point average an advantage by spotting them 7 points to start.

Holy graduation rates Batman!

They can't even improve the numbers that much with 6 six years.

But, do those numbers account for transfers to other schools where people might graduation. Say for instance if somebody went to Nova for 2 years and then graduated at George Mason?

Re: Hokie Football

BSU is in all honesty a glorified community college, not even comparable to Radford. Its unfair to compare it to a real college, most people do transfer. But I was damn impressed with their performance last night.

The BSU commercial last night was embarrassingly bad. Especially after the one Virginia Tech ran. I was watching with my son and he was like, "Who would go to that school?" after the BSU ad ran. It was pretty crappy.

VT's play calling with 5 minutes left was terrible,,,,and typical Stinespring

Bottom line--Until we get a good O.C. we will never reach the National Championship

Beamer has been way to loyal to this guy,,,this is the best talent VT has had on offense EVER,and still the offense underachieves,,,

I realize the college game is different than the pro game, but it seems to me you use a guy like Tyrod Taylor as a Sophomore QB when you have nothing else going for you on Offense. You have two or three guys open, and Tyrod goes running four yards when eight yards are needed. And I like the one play where his RB gets slammed in the backfield after his shitty hand-off and "T-Mobile" just stands there and watches the pressure get his guy. If Tyrod had stepped in and thrown a block on the first guy, he may have sprung his running back. But that sure the hell didn't happen.

Tyrod made some mistakes,,but he also made some big plays to get VT back in the game ,,typical college football,,

My issue is with 5 minutes left in the game you know what you have as offensive co-ordinator,,,go with whats been working not what might work or surprise the other team,,,

With under 4 minutes left - my friend looks over at me and says "Stinespring is too predictable. We're going to give them the ball back with too much time on the clock." And sure enough...

> Bottom line--Until we get a good O.C. we will

I'm starting to lean to that side of thinking also.

That first quarter was an abortion and the clock management/play calling on VT's last possession was shoddy at best. And while I understand that he had no protection last night, I'm getting sick of Tyrod's shucking and jiving while he tries to make something happen. Just fucking run and run like you mean it.

For what it's worth, I don't know that the University of Idaho even compares to Radford and the graduation rates are skewed because BSU is a feeder school for other universities. If you look at states like Georgia, for example, the graduation rates at Georgia Southern pale in comparison to either UGA or Georgia Tech since many students use GSU as a way to improve their grades so that they can transfer. However, I don't know that you see in Virginia since a smaller portion of students start at Radford or CNU and go on to VT or UVA. This is more common with students going from NOVA to another university.

Tone-lician - thanks for the source. I had come across the stats previously a number of times.

Look, there's lots of hypocrisy in college athletics, so it is typically risky to point out the flaws of any one school.,

But BSU's stats are so bad that it is a wonder that Idaho taxpayers put up with it. Note that, at least according the Washington Post in a recent article, BSU's President has found the money to pay Arent Fox to advise them on the anti-trust aspects of the BCS system. Now there's a good use of taxpayer and tuition money at a school that barely can graduate 1 in 20 students in 4 years. Great priorities. Why would anyone not playing sports choose this place over a junior college? Its reputation has to be at the bottom of the barrel.

Ironically, given the NCAA's minimum credit hours and eligibility standards, the scholarship athletes at Boise (the football team nears a 50% grad rate) inflate the 4 and 6 year graduation rates. Take away the scholarship athletes - another taxpayer and regular tuition payer expense - and the four year rate at this august institution may be at 3%. This is so dysfunctional it can barely be described.

This having been said, their athletes earned what they earned on the playing field and are a tough bunch - credit to them. But BSU puts the thug type allegations against VTech and other schools in the ACC with some problem athletes in perspective. I had to laugh when I read of the school's President claiming BSU is a "victim". Yeah, right.

Honestly I dont give a rat's ass about graduation rates,,,that has more to do with the fans in the stands, not the players on the field,,,

You want to watch successful college students play, watch the ivy league

If you have a scholarship at a major college and you dont want to make the most of it ,,,oh well,,

What we need is a good O.C.!!!

I WANT A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

They lost due to a rare bad handoff in their red zone. Otherwise, they played as well as or better than Boise. Tech's defense had poor field position in the first half due to miscues on offense and special teams.

VT had orginally scheduled the game for October when they would've been at full strength with Barquell Rivers (MLB) and Nick Beckten (OL). They also could've used the extra time because of the youth.

I think they'll continue to see opponents try to stuff the run since Tech's strength is the running game and Tyrod Taylor scrambling on pass plays.

Given Beamer's propensity to use guys like Taylor and the Vick brothers, you have to wonder if his whole offense is based on using a guy who can improvise shit. That's not a very good offensive philosophy, IMO.

Don't forget a blocked punt that gave Boise the ball on the 7 or something like that. That put them in a 10 point hole. VT basically spotted them 17 points in the 1st quarter. Otherwise in theory, the final score was 30-16.

Beamer likes the guys who can improvise. VT has some real stay at home QBs back in the day and they didn't do shit. Vick comes along, they go undefeated and play for the championship. It may have changed his mindset a little bit. It's OK to have the ability to improvise if the game becomes a total jailbreak, but you can't have that "maybe I should run" thought process every time you go back to pass. Then your QB gets happy feet and instead of just throwing it away, you get nailed for a 4 yard loss because you're trying to "make a play".

Spotting a team 17 points is not a formula for success.

Throwing a pass on third down in what could be the last possession of the game doesn't make sense if the clock gets stopped. Hokies should have run on third down. If they make the first, the game is over. If they don't get the first, run the clock down on fourth and then punt.

BS scored with enough time left anyways.

One of the two calls against Tech on the last drive seemed to be wrong. The guy was still in bounds when he was hit. I don't think that was excessive.

I saw that hit perfectly from my seat and could tell in real time that he was still in bounds and trying to stay in. Would he have? Maybe, maybe not. That call was bullshit and those refs were awful all night, but you shouldn't put yourself in a position where a shit call makes a difference. Oh well. Next time don't fumble inside your 15, get a blocked punt, miss two field goals, and commit too many penalties and maybe you win.

Tech only missed 1 FG which was out of his range.

That two big errors were the fumbled exchange and the two penalties on the Boise punt return.

Other than that, Tech probably should've beaten BS despite the absence of a running game. They really need to use their running backs more on short passing routes. The OL was overmatched. Their tight ends don't contribute to the passing game this year.

Re: Hokie Football

I won't dance around the issue, I'm a huge Tech fan and very biased when watching games. From what I understand, that 1st VT fumble happened because the Center thought Taylor called a shotgun play - which he didn't - and hiked the ball too hard. Seems to me if they played a team like JMU 1st and BS 2nd, most of those kinds of mistakes would be ironed out and the pressure wouldn't be as high.

Having said that, I love college football and mistakes / wild plays are part of the reason I love the sport. Love those Hokies but never thought they had a chance for the national championship this year.

Their offensive line coach needs to go. They've had problems blocking for 4 of the last 5 years.

This may be a long season as both lines are weak. Linebacking is also weak.

I don't think the D has gotten a fumble or an interception yet.

+1

Even though I have lived Fairfax since 1990, I have no affinity to any Virginia school, but always thought that the VT hype was way over the top. I get school pride and all that, but the reaction some people have to this loss and going 0-2 is bizarre. As a Boston College grad I watch my share of games, but don't go apeshit and call people names when they lose. Had they come up short yesterday against Kent State it would have been disappointing, but I am not going to lose sleep over it.

This morning, however, there are insults all over Facebook against JMU calling it a 'white trash' school and more. People are arguing that if VT had not had injuries they would have easily defeated a lesser, unworthy opponent in JMU. Well, that's football and I think that, at least yesterday, they were outcoached and outplayed. Other people are complaining about the weather, but the last time I checked it was raining and cold on both sides of the field. This sounds like the response when BC pulled out a last second win in Blacksburg on a Thursday night.

How would VT react if they had beaten JMU 45-0? It goes both ways, but clearly VT football is not Alabama.

So not only are the Hokies a bunch of hillbillies and VT filled with kids who couldn't get into UVa, they can't even manage to maintain the one thing they supposedly have going for them--football dominance. LOL.

Did those VT morons see the game? Do they understand how football is played? Did they see how a QB who last week was splitting time ran all over their asses? Even if the injuries were significant, their highly touted offensive stars were on the field the entire game - Taylor, Boykins, Williams/Evans. They got outcoached and outplayed.

Judging from all the blogs I've read (ESPN etc),, the VT faithful are finally willing to see Beamer fired if it gets Stinespring fired,,,,

Maybe Stinespring is oblivious to this, but if he has heard the rumblings, he's a sorry bastard for not quitting,,,,

Beamer has shown this incompetent son of a bitch incredible loyalty, but Stiney is willing to take Beamer down with him,,,

Remember what happened to the coaching staff when Michigan lost to Appalachian State?

GONE-SKI!

Hopefully Bud Foster is the next coach HE'S EARNED IT,,,and I bet he would have fired Stinespring years ago

Any bets on the next Hokie criminal being from the Seven Cities of Crimeola (aka the 757)?

As a taxpayer forced to pay for the schools down there, I want better returns. I say give Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria residents free votes in all downstate School Board elections.

Success brings jealousy. 17 straight bowl games...only 1 other team has that going right now...10 win seasons 6 straight years...VT and Texas. Losing to JMU, pretty embarassing no doubt. It was their super bowl and VT didn't care about playing them. The fortunate thing for the Hokies is both losses were non-conference, they can still win their conference and go to a BCS bowl game

The CAA is 3-3 against the ACC in the past two years and the league has won 19 games against FBS opponents since 2000. Maybe they aren't "supposed" to, but it happens pretty frequently. JMU almost beat the Terps last year. The CAA puts some quality talent in the NFL too.

As much as I love the Hokies, there is no point talking/posting about them or getting emotionaly involved with them as long as Stinespring is the OC,,,

Done it for years, not gonna do it anymore,,,still a fan,,still gonna watch and root for the team,,,just gonna do it very quietly and suffer in silence

Yeah but even UVA has its share of thugs and murders, let us not forget. And they don't sing opera when they score, they sing Auld Lang Syne with altered lyrics. Public domain, baby!

There is a reason that VT has gone to 17 straight bowl games and that is one, they are a decent team and two, year after year they they play a incredibly easy schedule. VT likes to play the unranked teams and beat them good. Those scores look impressive! Look at the latest AP top 25, they play exactly one top 25 team all season long.
Teams in the Big 10 Big 12, or the SEC are playing 5,6,7 teams in the top 25. VT would be very lucky to finish at .500 in one of these real conferences.
A good team?...Yes. An elite team?...Right.

This is a down year for them. They're young on defense. They compensate for lagging other big schoolsin recruiting by redshirting most of their recruits.

Hmmm ... according to a couple of sites, Virginia Tech's "incredibly easy" schedule is ranked top 20 across the nation. Who to believe? A troll on some random message board? I don't think so you're an uninformed buffoon if you believe the Virginia Tech schedules an "incredibly easy" schedule in an effort to slip into bowl games.

Case in point, google around for NCAA Football Strength of Schedule. Here's the first site I found, it lists Virginia Tech's schedule at #15 in the nation. Feel free to provide others that offer an opposing point of view http://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/ranking/strength-of-schedule-by-team

Are rankings really that important? Coming into this season, how many teams were the Hokies scheduled to play that were ranked in the top 25? 4 or 5 at least. Sure, the ACC is having a down year and most of those teams have slipped out of the top 25. Does that mean the polls are "really accurate" and sort themselves out as the season progresses? Sure you could argue that ... but wait, Virginia Tech is climbing again and ranked #27 in the AP and #30 in the Coaches Poll.

Hater.

After listening to Hokie fans spouting before the season "this is the year VT will win the title" I was compelled to state, VT is "good in the ACC but nationally irrelevant." Top 15 schedule strength, huh? They play one opponent all season that is currently nationally ranked. Must be some awfully easy schedules out there! VT did play an elite team from the SEC last year and the result..... 155 offensive yards vs. Alabama's 499..... Poor Tyrod Taylor looked like a deer caught in the head lights.
The dominant team and a very good one, in the ACC this year is Florida State. But guess what? They are not on VT's schedule. What a coincidence!
Next year why not add George Mason to your arsenal of football heavyweights, (Madison, Duke, Central Michigan, etc.) VT could easily beat them 81 to 0 and impress the pollsters in the process.

They didn't have two of their top offensive lineman and their top linebacker in the Boise game. If you watched the game, you would've seen Boise's line was in the backfield all day.

Hey troll, you're the one that raised the question about an "incredibly easy schedule" ... yet in the next post you indicate how they were spanked by Alabama (who won the national championship that year). I guess we should have ducked them, right? Guess we should have ducked LSU and USC the years we played them and they went on to win the title. Sure we blew a 4th quarter lead against Alabama last year (the eventual national champion). We also played them without our best offensive weapon, RB Darren Evans who tore his ACL that week.

I understand that you're not old enough to remember those tough games against LSU and USC the years they went on to win the title. I do, however, expect you to understand that schedules are made years in advance and that the ACC, like other conferences that have teams in different divisions, don't play every team in the conference every year. fwiw OOC scheduling over the next 5 years includes opponents such as Ohio State, Wisconsin, Kansas State, and East Carolina. I suppose if Ohio State drops out of the top 25 when we play them you'll be back spouting that Tech scheduled another pansy.

/rolleyes
