What is your personal favorite about Fairfax?

With many negative threads here on this board, I thought I would introduce a positive one (not that I see anything wrong with some of the gripes, but...)

So - in the county of Fairfax, what have you done or discovered, that you consider the best, hidden treasure, etc. In other words, what is your personal favorite in Fairfax?

For me, it is my memories of the way the county USED to be :-)

But since we can't really go back in time, my favorites are:

1: Mike's American Grill and their Eight-Layer Dip (used to be Nine-Layer dip, about 2 decades ago)

2: Burke Lake Park

3: The way that we are afforded everythign so close, yet depending where one choses to live, we can still be, "far away" from it all.

For me, its the crooked Fairfax County Police Department, and all those pigs are such a good thing for this community. Those crooked doughnut eaters.

Now that that has been said...

Super...

Now that that has been said (as expected here), please attempt to keep the topic on track ;-)

(Feel free to create a topic if you like, for your love of the FCPD, thanks)

I think the park system is great. There are trails and bike paths and ools and nature areas. I have been to a lot of places and this county and area in general has made a many places for people to enjoy the outdoors.
I also like the variety of restaurants in the area.

The school teachers used to be respected. Now all they do is bitch for double digit raises every year and turn out some of the worst students around. If it wasnt for DC and PG schools they would stick out more. Also the teachers I have seen dress like they shop at a rummage sale. I saw one the other day at a school and she had a house coat on and bedroom slippers. I figured she was a janitor or something, turned out to be a teacher. The principal looked like he drove a cab on his off hours.

It's still the best place to raise a family, if you can afford it and can stand the traffic. Personally I think the teachers should make more. The property taxes the county govt makes off of us better be going to something other than DUI checkpoints and red-light cameras. Pay those teachers more so they might have a chance, a DREAM, of being able to actually own a home and pay those hefty property taxes.

the shear number of sex offenders and VAs insane policy for what constitutes as a sex offender. all i know is that if anyone kicks/knees me in the balls, ill be sure to charge them with sexual assault. even if they are found not guilty, they are still stuck on that list... UNLESS they stay in jail until the trial. almost nobody knows that they will be put on the list even if they are found not guilty if they post bail.

The board of supervisors always gives more each year to the school board for its budget. The school board consistently uses teachers' raises as one of the main reasons it wants more money annually; unfortunately, the money isn't used for that and the teachers lose out. If the county board could legally force the school board to put the money where it claims it wants to put it, it would. Unfortunately, all the board of supervisors can do is transfer additional monies each year and hope it gets used for that purpose.

The park system, the education, close to Washington DC subway in\events like the fireworks. Good paying jobs for techies and great tech companies - Network Solutions who owns the majority of internet transactions is located here.

20 minutes from Good Guys and Camelots.

Five Guys (though I understand they have gone national)

Buying beer and wine in grocery stores (went out of state recently. What a fucking headache looking for liquor stores for shit).

Ethnic Food Selection (yes, the Third World lives here, but damn they gots some good food).

Metro (the fucker just ain't long enough. Run the bastard out to Centreville and Dulles already).

Battlefields (these mass cemetaries make for great picnic areas and jogging paths. Your sacrifice has not been in vain, Johnny Reb and Yankee Doodle).

Yes, but the girls here can read, write and over 2/3 of them don't half cocaine habit.

If you really want hot women then go to LA or Vegas. Don't expect to understand a word they say.

Only problem there is those places are meca's for HIV and STD's. I knew this one girl who had STD's and she would go to Vegas to get her groove on for the weekend and return. She wouldn't care how many guys she infected in Vegas.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas... except for the STD's. LOL

The park systems are very nice. You're always fairly close to one, and even in such a built up area you can still get out and roam. The rec centers are gorgeous, clean, and very well equipped.

Crime is very low. The FCPD, for all its faults, does a good job.

There are a tons of jobs and lots of work and the area is recession proof thanks to the federal government. Don't believe me? Go out and drive around the rest of the country. Drive around West Virginia, southern Virginia, PA, Ohio, much of New York, etc. Those places look like a bomb hit them. Every third store / business is closed. Fairfax just sort of passed all that by.

FCPS, for all its faults, does a good job. Again, get out into the real world, go to other states and jurisdictions, etc. Montgomery County is very good, Loudoun is good, but go 60 miles away and the schools are not that good.

The local government services, again, for the faults, are quite good. We had a bat in the child's bedroom at 1:00 AM. Animal control was at the house in 20 minutes, caught the bat, explained what to do, and called up 10 hours later to tell us it was rabies free. Do you think you get that elsewhere?

Of course there are things I don't like. The traffic. The congestion. How it takes hours to go anywhere during rush hour. But I lived here long, long, long ago back when it wasn't crowded. And it was full of rednecks. As the congestion has moved in and as property values have gone up, they've been forced out. Hey, you can always move to Manassas and Bristow, but enjoy the cars up on blocks and the trash and the neighbors having screaming arguments at 2 AM.

Those are all the same thing. In 1970, you could have added the number of
respiratory diseases that living here caused, and all the while, it took just as long to commute downtown then as it does today.

> But I lived here long, long, long ago back when

It was just as crowded, only over smaller areas. And all of what little there was outside the Beltway really was the equivalent of some trailer park in rural Arkansas.

My favorite thing was moving the fuck out of that unfriendly, lib infested, crime infested, overpopulated, bad weather, bad traffic shithole. Life is so much better elsewhere and couldnt be happier that I don't deal with Fairfax anymore.
