Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
OP: yes, the changes are permanent. Walney traffic can no longer go south on 28 to get to 66... they need to go to westfields or snake through to the Parkway to hit I-66 and that is going to royally suck for them. Braddock traffic can no longer go north on 28, they have to go to westfields. You can no longer go straight through the intersection between Braddock and Walney.
This frees up two light cycles (walney to braddock/left on 28, as well as braddock left on 28/straight to walney). Plus the light past that one was removed on 28 south because people can't get on west I-66 from 28 south anymore... they need to get on I-66 at 29.
duh: yes, I heard stuff was closed off for the one-year anniversary.

I take it the moron who thought this up thinks the traffic being diverted will just magically cross over 28 some how???
So it saved two cycles at one light, it has just moved that traffic to another light making that turn\straight light longer. The traffic was distributed in the old setup, now there is a bigger bottleneck down the road.
Screw the people crossing 28. Who gives a rats ass that 10 people get inconvenienced while 100000 make the trek up 28N daily. Also, take out the god damn lights at the soccer field too or at least turn them off during rush hour (6:00 am to 8pm). I could give a rats ass about some soccer mom being late to game.

10 people... try more like a couple thousand FFX residents a day!
I'll suggest at next the FFX Board meeting that all intersections on Rt28 are closed except for the intersection at Rt 7. I'm going to be laughing my a off when they close your intersection! And they will, give the highway department about four more months to put their new plan into affect. ROFL!
They'll probably end up putting tolls on Rt28 too!

The crossing to that area is at Westfields. This mostly affects residential areas like Sully Station, where yeah it's inconvenient but not a whole lot so. What I'm a little nervous about is that to get to Westfields from that area you need to take Poplar Tree, which is only two lanes for a couple of miles. More traffic heading through there is going to result in more frequent accidents, and any accident there can't be driven around. Maybe the proximity of the police station will get response there sooner.

I agree that this is what happened following the grade change at Westfields. However in this case not so much. The next light southbound was removed. The following light (28/I-66) was improved by dissallowing I66 -> southbound 28 access. The next intersection is the 28/29 grade change. The new backup will be at 28 where the BK/McD's are, the light before the Multiplex light.
I'm not trying to sell the change as the greatest idea ever... personally I'd rather see it undone. But the impacts aren't that massive (at least they don't appear to be yet) unless you live on the Walney side. Those people that use I66 (and who doesn't?) got majorly fUx0r3d.

My intersection is 29 dumbass so the likelihood of that happening is about the same as you passing your GED exams; zilch. I hope they make it so your ricer has to circle out onto 50 to get to 66. That'd be a hoot.

But theres already a backup at the new braddock/28 light. The backup from this light goes to the BK/Mcdonalds light already. So now, the improvements to 28 at walney, which arent supposed to impact me, now DO cuase me trouble becuase the backup is now greater where I go thru: New braddock and old centreville roads.

Amen to that. Those intersections have been a dangerous stopping point on 28 for far too long. I'm all for this plan.
Just get rid of the damn lights already. Obviously there's not enough traffic on these roads or they'd make a bypass like they did everywhere else on 28. Merging on/off 66 is already a cluster fuck, why add to it?
It only takes ten or fifteen minutes that way (28 to 66 from westfields in rush hour). The walney way was a joke...You would get all the way to the park and then sit through 15 cycles of the light.
I'm thinking more on Walney of the people that live right there. If you go 28 N, hang a right on Walney, and make an immediate right, there's a number of housing developments over there. Yeah it piled up during rush times, but for weekends and off-hours those people have to go pretty far out of the way to get to 66W... not so much 66E because getting there via the Parkway interchange is kind of on the way anyway.
I was surprised at the amount of access cut off for so many households to the 28/29 area. I wasn't personally affected... I was just a bit surprised.

I've gone both ways when 28 south is backed up, taking Walney on the east side of 28. That's literally 28 minutes to get to I66, as you make a left turn across 28 to do it.
Or..you can take the new bridge and it's maybe 10 minutes, as you make a right turn across 28 to get to I66.
I'm talking about entering 28 from Braddock Road. A quick right turn onto 28 and 66 is a few hundred feet up the road. (It doesn't take long to get to Braddock Rd from the Westfields bridge).
Part of the improvements include dual right-turn lanes onto 28 from Braddock Road.
