hey does anybody know the deal with the hundreds of cops with shotguns i saw in the panam shopping center area, fairfax circle, and 29 going towards falls church? seriously every element of the fairfax county police seemed to be there. dozens of cars, bikes, motorcycles, dogs, helicopter. it seriously looked like world war three was about to start.

As usual, the amount of interest in the police on a site so decidedly anti-police astounds me. They caught a murder suspect from Prince George's County. I wonder if the police sit around and chat about every little thing the upstanding citizens of Fairfax County are up to all day long?

I was listening to the police scanner at the time this was happening. Apparently a vehicle that was parked and occupied behind the shopping center came up on the police computers as being involved in a felony. It was occupied by someone that could also have been involved in the same felony and was considered to be armed.

Homicide Fugitive Arrested
Alert officers capture homicide fugitive from Prince Georges County. Officers were, on Monday, April 23 at approximately 3 p.m., patrolling the area near the Pan Am Shopping Center at 3001 Nutley Street. They saw a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche parked behind the building. During an inquiry of the vehicle, the driver was found to be wanted for homicide by the Prince Georges County Police Department. The man ran from the car. Officers with the assistance of the helicopter and K-9 encircled the suspect in a nearby wooded area. After approximately 30 minutes, the helicopter unit spotted him and directed officers to his location where he was apprehended. Erik Kenneth Dixon, 25, of 7106 Greeley Road, Landover, Maryland was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, treated for injuries sustained while running, and released. He was then taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with fugitive from justice.

good work by fcpd, he never would have been caught in PG he would have just blended in with the criminal element.

1) What's with the racial slurs from the "citizens"?
2) Why must all cops be stereotyped with donuts? They like bagels too ya know! :P
3) And yes, it was about a murder suspect. They don't bring big toys without reasons to justify it.

I think it's more terrifying that these incidents seem to always be handled "in-house" and are never brought to a grand jury.

I believe police shootings (with fatalities) here in FFX Co. are infrequent enough to warrant a grand jury on every occasion.

Agreed to in principle, however neither of the most recent shootings in NoVA went to a grand jury, zero for two. And a grand jury != indictment... there's not really anything to lose in sending evidence to one in these two cases. If there isn't enough evidence that a crime was committed (according to a grand jury, NOT to internal investigations) then the police department's discipline procedures will stand.

We obviously have a difference in opinion. If you are comfortable with police departments internally shielding officers involved in these incidents from the judicial system then I doubt anything I type here will change your mind.

It will be interesting to see what happens in civil proceedings. They are the only remaining recourse if police departments, working in conjunction with district attorneys, protect police officers from the criminal justice system they are supposed to be supporting. At least we'll be able to hear about evidence and we'll have the court system determine civil penalties, which could be zero if a jury sees it that way. Any result is fine with me... I'm just happy to have a process that resembles something you'd expect to find in a democratic nation come to a result at all.

Are you saying you disagree with me? I'm saying it's all part of a dirty system. If a prosecutor wants an indictment, he can convince a grand jury to hand him one, hence that stupid old phrase. Clearly the system is acting in the best interests of the officer and not the public in these 2 shootings and the Officer Fasci "trial" where he got off completely. I don't know how to change it, I would assume a §1983 action will follow in the shooting cases and we'll see where it goes.

Ok, I misunderstood your post to mean a grand jury can bring any indictment it wants, therefore bringing these cops up before one is potentially as corrupt an action as not doing so. Thanks for the clarification :)

The Police Department doesn't make the decisions on whether or not to charge these officers, so how is it that they are "shielding" the officers. Fasci was charged by the police department and the cases were dismissed by a judge in court, not by the police department. The shooting case was decided by a commonwealth's attorney , not the police department. Get your facts straight, no one is being shielded.

Read my post. The district attorney in both cases did not send either case we are discussing to a grand jury. The law enforcement and prosecutorial brotherhood kept these officers from prosecution. That is shielding.

Before you try to lecture me on getting my facts straight, PAY ATTENTION to what we are discussing here. My post clearly concerned police officers killing unarmed civilians. The Fasci case was a police officer who rammed his hummer into a delivery truck and he refused a breath test.

Speaking of shielding, good thing FCPD/NoVA isn't unique here. Not that I ever thought it was, but some may get a kick out of this story.
