"Riders" don't make their motorcycles loud to increase awareness. They do it for the same reason ricers rig up their Civics to be loud, or the same reason people buy Mustangs -- they have an inner need to feel "manly" and get attention. The more people who are looking at them, the cooler and more validated they feel. These are people who on some level were ignored by their parents during childhood, hence their need for attention as adults.

Sure, the noise is annoying. But the best thing you can do is ignore them -- it drives them crazy. And be thankful that your parents weren't so mean to you and that you don't have these kinds of "Look at me!!!" issues as an adult. You're much better off.

That's what I've often suspected, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I tend to think they just like that their machine sounds powerful. Nothing wrong with that...except you're taking it out in public and annoying a bunch of other people.

When I can't have a conversation IN my car because your bike OUTSIDE my car is too loud...it's too loud.

Either side of the argument implies that one person's entitlement trumps the others.

I say that the issue is very much about safety when I'm riding in the HOV lane (of which 90% of the miles on my motorcycle are from) and the distracted drivers that I see every day pulling boneheaded moves that endanger drivers around them.

If it makes you feel better to think of it as a childhood problem, that's okay by me. All that I care about is that you know I am there. And if that causes you a few second of agitation, so be it. Because you are just one in a hundred of people I will find myself near and at a distinct disadvantage against. And it's the one person who isnt paying attention that otherwise might pull into me that I am concerned about.

Before I got louder pipes on my bike I could point to any number of near misses. After getting the pipes redone, I've had none. Zero. Not a single person has mistakenly pulled into me in traffic. It may not be scientific enough for some of you, but for me it works.

How about just taking a few moments to chill the fuck out.

LOL. The one who's intentionally being obnoxious tells the rest of us to chill the fuck out. I love it. :-)

Sorry but I've already dismantled the "safety" argument earlier in this thread. (So well in fact that Dane Bramage hasn't been seen since.) No "rider" can logically claim to be concerned about his or her own safety -- it's a contradiction. I don't see why you "riders" can't just be honest. You like the noise because it makes you feel manly and gets you attention. Why be ashamed of it?

ignorantly and dangerously saying "I do this, because

The real answer here is that there's a bit of truth in both versions of this argument. There are some with little dick syndrome that like to get straight pipes and can't help themselves from blipping the throttle every chance they get to make some noise. There are some that are not idiot riders who ride within the law and want to make sure cagers around them know they are there because most of the time, cagers don't pay 100% attention.

I have ridden off and on for 20+ years, including 5+ in the DC metro area. In those 5 yrs I've had countless incidents of people changing lanes/merging into me because they made a quick glance out of their peripheral vision, didn't see another large vehicle and start merging. I've had countless people not pay attention to how close they are behind me and almost run into me when I'm stopping at red lights. I've had people change 3 lanes to make an exit at the last minute and almost run me off the road. I've had people pull out to pass someone and almost ram me head on because they did a cursory glance and didn't actually LOOK before moving. I've had people pull out in front of me whether I was going 25 mph or 65 mph because they didn't actually look. ETC ETC ETC

The problem is that most people driving a car/truck glance almost habitually with the expectation of seeing something as large as what they are driving and if that something isn't there in that cursory glance, they make their move. They aren't actually looking as much as they're going through the motions.

Riding with high beams helps greatly with people pulling out in front of you or pulling out to pass someone else while in your lane. It also helps greatly in decreasing the chances of someone cutting you off by changing lanes into your path. Louder pipes do actually help by making it obvious that you are next to someone in traffic and makes them more aware of your existance.

As far as lane splitting is concerned, in many countries it is legal to lane split and it's a cultural norm that people on scooters / motorcycles will weave through traffic to the front and take off as soon as the light turns and be ahead of the rest of the car traffic.

This is actually safer for the scooters/motorcycles as it gets them away from the cars while moving and actually reduces traffic congestion by getting those vehicles out of the way quicker.

The only reason it's so dangerous here is because people don't pay attention, their initial gut reaction is that the motorcycle rider is trying to "get ahead" and people get down right viciously bitter at the idea of someone motorcycle rider getting ahead of them.... to the point of seeing people purposely try to ram/squeeze motorcycle riders who were splitting lanes.

Just like there are some cagers that do pay attention, there are some motorcycle riders who are safe riders and vice versa.

People who argue absolute stereotypes will always be wrong.

Having already shown that DMV promotes the use of high beams - http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/citizen/drivers/mcmanual/mcmanual6.asp - you have yet to show that use of this recommended approach is "dangerous" (i know, i know, those "stray beams of light" you are so concerned about).

Good post, Rob. Suggesting everyone does something for a single reason is pointless; my motivation is based entirely on experiences riding 4,000+ miles a year in I-66 HOV lanes (which are similar to yours).

One could easily have the same differences of opinions regarding large SUVs. I own a V10 Ford Excusion, lifted with 33" tires, a push bar and a Freightliner air horn.

Sigh...We're back to the broomstick again...and this time Troll wants a broken one...

Harley, whoever you are, I suggest you give up...this forum is not about reasoned discourse. I ride myself, use highbeams in the daytime (only in the daytime), and in over 20 years of riding, I've never had a person so much as flash their lights at me. I had no idea that this was such an incendary issue, but it is amusing to picture Troll frothing at the mouth (and other body parts) as he rants about light searing his eyeballs.

Just quit before Troll calls you a fagapuss, etc, etc, etc...

Oddly, Troll seems to know something about bikes, such as an R6 being a 600cc bike...I still suspect he is actually an avid rider and is writing all this to make people more aware of motorcycles, to ensure the safety of the riders...

It must obviously not be against the law for MCs to use high beams during the day to increase visibility, regardless of the code section you quoted.

In case you're taking the written test, study hard and answer correctly:

Page 10 of the Virginia Motorcycle Operator Manual, on the DMV website

Headlight
The best way to help others on the road see your motorcycle
is to keep the headlight on — at all times. Studies show that,
during the day, a motorcycle with lights off is twice as likely to
go unnoticed by other road users. Also, use of the high beam
in daylight increases the likelihood that you will be seen by
oncoming drivers.

Haha. Allow me to translate this into English:

"Regardless of the portion of the VA law you quoted which specifically and clearly states that 'a vehicle' shall use the low beam of his headlights within 500 feet of another 'vehicle', motorcycles are 'obviously' allowed to use their high beams in this situation. The DMV manual says use high beams, LEO uses them, I use them, we all use them.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation advocates their use, based on accident statistics

Nothing you write or say will change this.

Simply put, it is in far more places than the so called law you cite (which pertains to night driving)

Of course, I'll now let you have the last word again, with your broomstick brethren.

Since when is "the law" the determining factor as to weather its appropriate or not?

Others on your side of the debate suggest the response is to break even more laws to make a point to someone utilizing guidelines to promote safety in a place where law breakers are the norm on the roads.

If we're the only ones playing to the letter of the law, we're the ones who end up getting killed because of other people's negligence.

The law is not about being right or wrong.

Nope, you end up getting killed because you made a conscious decision to put yourself in danger by "riding". No one's fault but your own. You knew the risks and did it anyway because you think "riding" is cool and manly.

The only fault is with the straw man argument that you've created out of thin air. But if that's how you want to roll, I'm cool with it. :-)

The reason the law has been a focal point of this thread is because a handful of rocket scientists (lead by Dane Bramage) have maintained that they're not breaking the law and are therefore in the right. They've weaseled around the very-clear text of the law in various ways, from claiming that a suggestion in the DMV "riding" manual trumps the VA law all the way to claiming the law somehow only applies at night.

You're at least coming from a somewhat more solid position. You acknowledge what the law says and admit that you're willingly breaking it. We just disagree on the logic of it. You say it's for safety. I say that no one who willingly puts oneself in danger ("riding") when it's not necessary (drive a car instead) cares about their own safety; therefore, willingly annoying other drivers with your dopey high beams in the name of safety is a bizarre contradiction rooted in deeper issues. And so it goes. :-)

After wending my way through your last garbled word salad, I see that, yet again, Troll, you're suggesting and hinting at purposely swerving into the path of a motorcycle. Your anger now seems to be confabulating bicycles and motorcycles--as evidenced by your "bicycle riding faggot" line, so I assume both types of vehicles are at risk when you're on the road.

Re: Idiot motorcycles and high-beams
Posted by: Harley ()

Isn't it really about degrees of danger and the forethought to minimize that risk by employing methods that are shown to improve safety?

Yes, I ride knowing its more dangerous than being in a car, but driving my monster Excursion is safer than that (although clearly this would put any driver of a car at a distinct disadvantage). But I get 9mpg in the Excursion and would be driving in rush hour traffic in an over-sized vehicle that fits my 5 children better as opposed to riding in the HOV and getting 40+ mpg. On days the weather isn't favorable, I'll drive my Acura.

As it is, riding my motorcycle with the louder pipes alone has made my commute much more safer. I dont know that the lights are a factor either way and only just recently started using them, however, I try to be aware of when they might be considered obnoxious to the driver in front of me (my Harley has dual front headlights) and I turn them down if I am driving in close traffic at low speeds or if its nearing sunset.

However, another defensive tactic is to ride closer to the car in front of me - leaving even a couple car lengths between us is the space where someone who isnt thinking just assumes there is nobody there and will turn into me (without a turn signal or any other indication of a lane change). Again, probably against the law as I would be considered "following too closely" and the person in front of me is probably taking notice, but I'm trying to find a balance between being seen and being safe.

I don't care for lane splitting or weaving, I'm not in a race or on a track. I'm just trying to get from point A to point B safely.

Do I drive 55mph on the highway? Not always. If traffic is light and I have a lane nearly to myself, I might do 64mph (or more?). Legal? Safer? Nope. But we all do it. Again, degrees of danger here. It's not just getting on a bike around here that is dangerous - it's just getting into traffic. I've seen 4 or more cars piled up because someone lane jumped to get into the Nutley exit and didn't want to wait a minute or two longer by merging properly and did so in a way as to cause everyone to slam on breaks and rear end each other.

I'm not intentionally trying to be a dick with my pipes or my high beams; I'm just trying to avoid being hit by a car driven by someone not paying proper attention while at the same time taking advantage of HOV and much lower fuel costs.

Sure, minimizing risk makes sense. But you're doing it by annoying other drivers, and you're the one choosing to put yourself at risk in the first place, so you can't be surprised by our reaction. As the great George Costanza once said, we're trying to have a society here.

In any event, your first few posts in this thread notwithstanding, you appear to be far more reasonable than the other riders who have stopped by so far. On behalf of the rest of us I thank you for at least trying to be conscious of when your lights are annoying. I hope you'll also start considering drivers who are coming at you in the opposite direction.

Generally speaking, 95% of my riding is in the daytime in HOV lanes. Drivers in the other direction are not a factor. In as much as I can ride on the weekends, I would say that I do not ride with my high beams on at all as I avoid routes with heavy traffic preferring open road rides to the west. My intent is not to annoy, just to try and be seen. Same with the exhaust - even I thought it was a bit much when I first got it having researched and ask numerous times if this was not "loud" (but learning later loud is subjective and asking a custom shop skews the answer). But I can't knock the results and got used to it.

I wouldn't mind checking out the pulse light bulbs, curious if they are a compromise between riding with high beams or just a novelty item.

Problem with this site is most of it is just shit talking; I dont mind taking a shit-talking position on the subject; but most seem uninterested in a meaningful discussion that leaves room for compromise.

I only use high beam during the day, like the DMV manual states.

And Kilton, since the code and DMV manual that is based on code contradict, perhaps you should go consult with a judge for a clarification - since it means so much to you.

Mid to low 70s through the weekend. I'll be out riding and using my high beams while you go check it out.

Troll, You sad little boy.....

I find it amusing that without any effort I make you so darn angry. Your sad and lengthy attempts to correct my spelling and vocabulary are quite droll (look that up), considering how wildly you are mispelling your CAPS vitriol (whoops, that's another big word for you).

"Wend" was actually used correctly, just to give you a little bit of education.

The best part was the fact that you couldn't even spell "thesaurus" correctly...ouch; better stick to made-up words that you're comfortable with, such as "fagapuss," etc, and leave correcting other people's English to someone who knows how to spell and construct a sentence, skills that you lack.

It must tear you up that there is actually some reasoned dialog going on here, but you can always be relied on to scream for attention, with your threats to hurt someone on the road.

And no, as much as you love that broomstick to which you constantly refer, you'll have to find someone else to stick it up your ass for you...

PS...bicycle, motorcycle...two different things

I personally believe that people should have to ride a motorcycle for a year before they are allowed to drive a car..

It will put a whole different perspective of defensive driving.

I used to ride over well over 10K miles a year before moving to this area.. Around here I'm lucky to get 4K a year, and when I do ride that, I do it out of this are..

I've never seen more self centered cage drivers anywhere else in my life... Everything is about them, and hearing people here complain about loud pipes points that out to me. Sorry we do something that keeps us riders a little safer and bothers you for 15 seconds..

I've never in my life lived in an area with so many pompous asses..

I need to get a stack of bumper stickers made up... Your BMW (or other snooty auto brand) does not make you as important as you think you are.

Yes, I ride with my high beams on. Yes, I have loud pipes on one of my bikes, and yes, I have high end and very loud air horns on my bikes..

By some freak of nature, I'm still alive after riding with all the self serving specially entitled cage drivers in this area..

You can bitch about my high beams and loud pipes all you like, but at least they allow me to be here to listen to your drivel..

Wow, Troll, I can't believe all the time it must have taken you to work your potato-chip-grease-laden keyboard to cut and paste your response to me. And even with the aid of a "thesuarus," as you so charmingly spell it, you still only managed to come up with a bizarre word-salad worthy of a psychotic, which, of course, you are. To compound your madness, you think that every rational person on this thread is actually one person.

Say, did you read the news item about the Latin Kings Goonies gang in NYC who anally raped a kid this past weekend? Seven of these brave guys held the kid down while the eighth raped him with a broomstick and toy baseball bat..apparently the kid was accused of being gay, and this was his "punishment." Seven have been arrested, and the eighth is still at large. A broomstick? That's an amazing coincidence, given your fascination with them...were you in NYC this weekend? This kind of gay self-hatred is right up your alley...I wonder if there's an award for turning you in...

PS...in spite of all your frothing-at-the-mouth efforts to prove what seemed to be an very important point to you, I did use "wend" correctly....

I'm actually performing a public service here...all the hours you spend at the keyboard "responding" to imaginary enemies are hours that you're NOT on the road, endangering motorcyclists..or bicyclists, as to you they seem to be one and the same...

Ah, Troll, you might want to check your own spelling before calling someone else a dumbass...there's a difference between "its" and "it's", you rump ranger fairymuffin!

And I don't think that's really windshield washer fluid that will be spurting from your car...admit it, you're turned on by motorcycles!

YOU are COMPLETELY WRONG !

"It's" is a POSSESIVE-CONTRACTION.

BESIDES, this is known as GRAMMAR -NOT spelling, you Ass-Weasel !

Afraid not, Babycakes..."its" is a possessive pronoun. "It's" is a contraction for either "it is," or "it has." Look it up on your beloved Internet. You made the same mistake twice in one posting, and yet again you've gleefully exposed your ignorance to the entire world...

This is such basic English grammar. I find it quite humorous that an insignificant illiterate shitcake like you would even try to correct me...know your place, Fagapuss.

GUESS WHAT, I WAS MAKING A JOKE THAT'S WHY I SAID IT
WAS A "POSSESIVE-CONTRACTION.

LIKE YOU JUST DID?

BECAUSE IF YOU REALLY KNEW JACK SHIT,
YOU WOULD HAVE CALLED ME ON THE FACT THAT THERE IS
NO SUCH THING AS A 'POSSESIVE-CONTRACTION'.

SO?

JUST LIKE A ONE-TRACK MINDED SIMPLETON, YOU ARE FIXATING ON
IRRELEVANT TANGENTS BECAUSE YOUR POINT AND ARGUMENT WAS LOST
A LONG, LONG TIME AGO -AND YOU KNOW IT.

ACTUALLY, THAT WOULD MORE ACURATELY DESCRBE WHAT YOU
ARE DOING RIGHT NOW.

SEE YOU ADMITTED IT, AS I PREVIOUSLY POINTED OUT IT IS INDEED
GRAMMAR, *NOT* SPELLING -YOU DICK CHOMPING MORON.

I FIND IT HUMOROUS THAT A SUPPOSED INSIGNIFICANT ILLITERATE
SHITCAKE FINDS HIMSELF SO INCREDIBLY BUSY CORRECTING THE WORK OF
A SCHOLAR SUCH AS YOURSELF.

So BABYCAKES, you take all that time at your sheltered workshop computer terminal, trying to "correct" me on something as simple as "it's" versus "its,"you manage to get it 100% WRONG, and now you say it was a "joke" when you spent all that time typing out psychotic bullshit?....Right...so who's the dick chomping moron...again?

This is so funny (and pathetic). One more time, Troll......"its" is a possessive pronoun. "It's" is a contraction for either "it is," or "it has." Even one of your "Mexican biker midgets" knows the difference.

And bringing all this full circle, you're just as wrong in your red-faced ranting about motorcycle high beams. Remember the original topic?.

Well, IT'S been fun, although I do feel a bit guilty for taunting an obviously handicapped person. Whose broomstick is that sticking out of Troll's ass? IT'S Troll's! ITS splinters excite Troll!

Buh bye, Fagapuss

ACTUALLY VERY LITTLE TIME WAS SPENT, YOU ARE THE

UM, THE REFERENCE TO A 'POSSESIVE-CONTRACTION' WAS THE JOKE
YOU WERE JUST TOO STUPID TO CALL ME ON THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO
SUCH THING.

AND THEN YOU WENT AS FAR AS TO WASTE YOUR TIME THINKING YOU
ARE TEACHING ME COMMON KNOWLEDGE.
I'M SORRY GRAMMER IS NOT MY TOP PRORITY AS I AM LAUGHING MY
ASS OFF @ YOU WHILE I TYPE OUT MY RESPONSES TO YOUR RETARDED DRIVVEL.

AGAIN, NOTHING WAS BULLSHIT ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU SEEMED TO
THINK GRAMMATICAL ERRORS ARE THE SAME AS SPELLING ERRORS.

***YOU***.

RUN IN CIRCLES LIKE A RETARD!

NO I AM NOT, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HAS BEEN *CONSISTANTLY* WRONG

WHY ARE YOU REMINDING ME, THAT I REMINDED YOU OF
YOUR TENDANCY TO STRAY OFF OF THE TOPIC OR POINT?

OF COURSE WE SEE IT!
....AND LOOK AWAY!

WHEN YOU WERE A KID DID YOU OPEN YOUR EYES WIDE AND
STARE AT A FLASHLIGHT IF A FRIEND WAS GOOFING AROUND
SHINING IT IN YOUR FACE?

SAME IDEA ASSHOLE.

> "i hope you mistake a motorcycle for a train and

Ummmmmm Mr highbeams,

Why would you want me to mistakenly play chicken with some motorcycle riding around blinding people with his HIGHBEAMS? So I can make a blinded left turn infront of him and he can explode like a watermelon getting blasted by a Mossberg shotgun?

Your SICK!

SINCE I AM IN THE INTERSECTION FIRST AND I AM LEGALLY IN THE MIDDLE
OF *EXECUTING* A TURN -YOU ARE THE ONE BREAKING ALL THE LAWS.
MAYBE IF YOU WEREN'T *SPEEDING* AND *BLINDING* ME WITH YOUR HEADLIGHTS,
I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO JUDGE YOUR DISTANCE AND SPEED AS YOUR
BODY HURTLED TOWARDS ME ATOP A 200HP ASSHOLE-VIBRATOR WITH A
CUSTOM PAINT JOB. BECAUSE IF MY VISION WAS NOT OBSCURED BY STRAY LIGHT
FROM YOUR HIGHBEAMS, I MIGHT HAVE NOTICED YOUR UNUSUALLY HIGH RATE
OF SPEED AND I COULD HAVE HURRIED UP OUT OF THE INTERSECTION FOR YOU.
BUT SINCE YOU MADE ME WINCE FROM YOUR USING YOUR BRIGHTS, I COULD
NOT JUDGE YOUR DISTANCE OR SPEED SO YOU ARE NOW A SAFE-MOTORCYCLE
DRIVING SPLAT ON THE SIDE OF MY CAR.

ALL BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO USE YOUR HIGHBEAMS INSTEAD OF YOUR BRAKES!

TOO BAD FOR YOU.

I like the way you added the "custom paint job" part...

Let's be honest, you made up the line about being a kid and having a friend shine a flashllight in your face since, as we all know, you've never had a friend in your life

Greetings,

I'm the Safety Officer for the Mexican Midget Motorcycle Club (MMMC), and I would like to say that we make it our official policy to use high beams while on group rides, but we only use high beams during daylight hours. At night we use just our low beams. Of course, we're riding mini-bikes, so it really doesn't matter either way.

Regards,

Hector
