For the same reason people wear their ridiculous looking pajamas when they go out. Comfort.
Americans want to be comfortable. Some of the women shoppers at Giant Food are flat out disgusting. If they won't run a comb through their hair, when was the last time they washed their beavers? Does anyone want to eat their beavers anymore? I doubt it.
