He is not ready for varsity, tiny. Very avg arm. Good luck with that.

First of all, I like LB and ROBO. I live on the line and know a lot of kids. I have a distain for LB due to the big mouth here and I think I know which asst it was that was doing it. Also, if you have hung around with Doc he is awfully cocky for a HS coach with no real resume to speak of. That is the best talent at LB in about ten years. At least the last staff that had it last knew how to use it although I hated their total sell out to a spread that is easy enough to contain.

Maybe it is me but ROBO is done. They won the Braddock Road Bragging Bowl. The O is predictable. 90% is four runs. They have no passing.

My last thought: Both D coaching staffs have to go.

-LB...ROBO RUNS, duh. They are bigger. You take away their ground and they stink. Their are ways to do this if you are smaller. My God you let them bend you over and do you TWICE. I feel for the kids because yes ROBO will run but they were not coached up to fight it. You can go six up front but make it work with imagination and movement.

-ROBO...LB can throw, duh. They shoot both sides long which you could not stop in two games. Next is the flats behind the shoot. I saw some changes with a three man line to drop an additional back but the three were so big and slow they were no threat until you blitzed a fast guy behind it; that worked sometimes. Just go 3-5-3 with 1 or 2 DEEP safeties. Let them come up on those passes. You had them 15 yds back to start and they were burnt by ten yards over and over both game. In the 3-5 have the outside D backs read the back. If he comes your way cover; If not blitz.

Just me two cents...

Yes he’s tiny and thin. He’s a freshman. He will grow..Hopefully. Shields was decent. Could have done with a better line. He fell apart against the better teams. Chantilly and Westfield zero Td passes. Madison one 5 yard TD pass.

Honest assessment is the coaching was disaster. Oline was not great but it was ok. Excellent RB, excellent group of WR, but the game plan was practically sandlot football. No one did less with more.

How much will he grows no one knows but he did not demonstrate superior arm talent for his age group (very avg arm talent and that is something you can only develop so much) if he is going to be Varsity QB1 next year why didn’t they prep him like Westfield did with their Frosh QB and move him up to JV?

My thoughts on the up coming game.

Chantilly v Madison - These are 2 very good defenses and not much offense.
Chantilly doesn't have a QB and will have a hard time scoring against that Madison defense. Madison is very fundamentally sound and will not beat themselves. This will obviously be a low scoring game. Madison 10-0.

Robinson v South County - SC is the best team in the state until someone shows otherwise. They can score lots of points and they have a great defense. Robinson is a run first team. When they get behind against SC, and they will, the QB does not throw well enough to get them back in the game. SC 38-21

Spreads for the region championships
Region A: Oscar Smith(-28) vs. Dale
Smiths first test of the year but Dale is only a upper mid tier team Smith smokes Dale. Will the weak schedule haunt smith if they win? Probably

Region B: Patriot @ Massaponax(-30)
Patriot with the upset over Garfield but Ponax rolled battlefield who gave Patriot trouble. If Ponax continues to roll it will get ugly for Patriot fast

Region C: Robinson @ South County(-17)
Rematch of two rival in district teams that don’t like each other. South county won last time but I could see Robinson giving them some trouble upset of the week?

Region D: Chantilly @ Madison(-3) Game of the Week
Another rematch these two teams really do not like each other. Was very close last time it will come down to who makes the better adjustments from last game to turn the tide either way will be a defensive battle of the two best defenses in the state. (Sorry smith fans but you haven’t played anyone good yet!)

1. Freedom - South Riding @ Stone Bridge (-28)
- Stone Bridge won 74-6. Yes, you read that correctly, 74-6! They were up 62-0 at halftime.

2. Patriot @ Gar-Field (-3)
- Patriot pulled off the upset, 13-7. I told you guys I don't know much about these PWC schools!

3. Chantilly (-7) @ South Lakes
- Chantilly won 7-0. Nailed this one! SL came in cold with the 2 week pause in the program, add to that a very stout Chantilly defense and what you get is shutout.

4. Lake Braddock @ Robinson (-3)
- Robinson dominated Lake Braddock, 58-35.

5. Wakefield @ Madison (-28)
- Madison won, but did not cover, 28-7. They took their foots off the gas in the second half. Could've made it ugly if they wanted to do so. Stone Bridge would've.

6. West Springfield @ South County (-20)
- South County won and covered, 47-24. WS was up 17-0 I beleieve, or something similar to that, and then SoCo turned it up. 22 straight wins for the Stallions.

"PLUS ONE" SPREADS:

1. Annandale @ McLean (-6)
- Annandale won 41-14. Totally missed this one. McLean must've mentally checked out.

2. Edison @ Oakton (-3)
- Edison won 24-14. Another one I missed.

3. Falls Church @ Westfield (-20)
- Westfield won comfortably, and covered. 45-7 final. Was 35-0 mid second quarter.

4. Herndon @ Hayfield (-7)
- Hayfield won and covered, 34-20.

5. Lee @ Woodson (-14)
- Woodson blows out Lee, 54-12.

6. Marshall @ Mount Vernon (-10)
- MV won and covered, 35-20.

7. Stuart @ Centreville (-10)
- Game cancelled due to a positive Covid test in the JEB program.

8. T.C. Williams (-7) @ Yorktown
- Another one I missed. Yorktown won, 24-15.

9. Washington-Lee @ Fairfax (-3)
- Nailed this one as well! Fairfax won 34-31, in OT.

10. West Potomac (-8) @ Langley
- West Potomac won 28-21, failing to cover by 1 point.

With the condensed playoffs, we get less local games. So, for the rest of the year I’m going to try my hand at some more non-local spreads.

1. Briar Woods @ Stone Bridge (-27)
- SB won the first time around, 56-29. I’m sure Mickey is pissed they gave up that many points and will be out for blood. Seems SB is on a head on collusion to represent the North in the Class 5 State Championship.

2. Broad Run @ Tuscarora (-14)
- It's criminal these teams dropped down to Class 4. They are better than a lot of the Class 5 teams.

3. Chantilly @ Madison (-6)
- *Local game of the week.* Madison won the first match-up between the two, 10-3. It’ll definitely be a defensive game. Madison is similar to Robinson in the sense that they love to run the ball down your throat. Chantilly is going to need offense in this one. 7 points against a SL team who had a 2 week pause prior to the game? Unacceptable. I think Madison manages to score enough points to pull out the win.

4. Maury (-10) @ Deep Creek
- Remember Maury? Beat SB in the state championship in 2019. I see they’re still relevant.

5. Manchester @ Highland Springs (-7)
- *Out of town game of the week.* Not your typically dominant HS team this year. Manchester is also moving back up to Class 6 next year. Highland Springs is on upset alert.

6. Patriot @ Massaponax (-14)
- Ponax looked extremely good last weekend against Battlefield.

7. Robinson @ South County (-15)
- SoCo won the first time, 37-20. It was one of their “closer games.” Robinson can’t throw the ball, we all know this. SoCo has some good LB’s, if they stuff the box and consistently get a good push on the line, they can hold Robinson scoreless. I don’t know if Robinson threw once last week. I noticed they put a LB back in coverage to try to stop the Braddock passing attack, to no avail. Too slow. Going to be interesting to see how they game plan for SoCo round 2. SoCo has been rolling, 22 in a row.

8. Thomas Dale @ Oscar Smith (-28)
- How many points does the Smith defense give up to Dale?

I don’t think madison has any kids even with offers. It’s quite incredible these two teams are here, just shows that they both have great coaching and players who play for each other and not for themselves

Is this really surprising? Hayfield has never really lived up to it’s potential, and the past two years have been disasters. So are there any sitting HC’s who could, or should be interested in this job? School has quite a bit of talent, but needs someone who can instill a little discipline.

What other HC’s are on the way out?

Of course Aziz goes for it...he applies for every job! But right now Hayfield isn't really a step up, in my opinion, at least not worth leaving Falls Church for. Hayfield has a tougher schedule and not as much talent as they used to. The best teams they had under Heavy Hendo were with kids he recruited from PG & MD.

Watched Madison-Wakefield and was not impressed with Madison. Not only do they look small, but they are too predictive with their offense. Was it a case of them playing down to the lack of talent at Wakefield, or is this normal for them? If it is normal, either Robinson or SOCO will kill them.

They played a ton of their JV players. They could have beat them 70-0 if they wanted to. The coaches like to lay off once the game is won.

Probably because it could be his own. Hayfield is still a secondary school so there is potential to develop 7th and 8th grader more before they step on the field.

Jennings has put in his time as the clip board holder, developing a great defensive line and getting none of the credit. Now is his time to shine, his time to reap the benefits of all his hard work, to finally be the main show at his old stomping grounds. Hayfield family rise up and demand excellence. Wouldn’t be surprised if Mel Morgan gets hired to be their new head coach. If you’re him you gotta take a shot at it. Was a former assistant coach their has does a good enough job at Oakton to even keep them afloat. In fact he almost beat Woodson the last time he coached against them in 2019 17-19.

Not Surprised...are you kidding me? Mel Morgan went to Oakton ,won 2 games (could've won 3)and apparently got rid of his offensive staff so he could run the offense (based on this past season) and only won 1 game and scored HALF of the amount combined in 6 games that they did in 2 games in his first year! Not to mention the thread from someone stating he stole a kids sneakers & wore them during practice (not sure if that’s true but I wouldn’t doubt it). He is a raw raw guy (cheerleader) and has NO CLUE how to run a team, let alone an offense/defense. How did he improve Oakton? He should stay at Oakton, better yet, I heard Vienna Yoith is hiring, go there Mel!

Please, please take him back Woodson. Then you can lead the county in delay of game penalties. Unfortunately, the brain-dead AD at Oakton will then find the third-worst coach in Nova to hire. How's it going at Osbourn Park, Ryan Smith?

I hear the Hayfield Admin set up a phone interview last night after SOCO's practice with Coach Jennings to gauge his interest. They did not want to wait around and let the opportunity to grab a talented young seasoned mentor/coach for their program slip away. He, of course, let them know that he would need to focus on his current mission of leading the South County Defense with his stellar game planning, in game adjustments, and mentoring of all the young men of SOCO Football before he could consider another opportunity. This guy is all you could ever want in a football coach Hayfield. Do not let this opportunity to hire your future State Championship winning Coach pass you by. Hire him immediately.

Not gonna defend that at all but let’s see here, Oakton actually could’ve won 4 games that 2019 season came down to the last drive and even that is a surprise in itself. I’ve seen Oakton football games yes they aren’t very good but let’s be honest that program isn’t good and hasn’t been in a long time. Their last “good season” was when they went 4-6 in 2016. The talent drop off at Oakton has been horrible. Oakton was going to be 2-4 at the most in this season. The only hope for their football team is to move to the Liberty District and beat up on teams like Herndon W&L Langley ect...or find a coach that can elevate their players and play beyond their talents which is very rare to see these days. You aren’t gonna find a Simmons Counts or Curry very often like these other concorde teams have found.

It's been a tough several years for Oakton. No question. I used to think their demographics doomed them going forward, but I don't see that holding Madison back so. . .

The seniors this year had a rough go of it. They entered as freshmen in 2017 when Jason Rowley had pretty much already checked out. Suffered through the worst coaching staff in VHSL history in Ryan Smith and his cast of hillbillies as sophomores.. Had a new coaching staff last year under Morgan and Hoskins, and in the middle of their junior year, Covid hits. Oh yeh, the school has been an open pit construction zone for the past 3+ years so there was no school weight room to speak of for offseason training. Combine that with playing in the Concorde, and there is no wonder they struggled.

Having watched their games, they had some talent, but they were overmatched physically and had no depth. Their running game was in shambles (starting RB quit halfway through the year), and it's a miracle that their QB did not leave any games on a stretcher given the hits he took., The defense was on the field 35-40 minutes, opposing teams sent 2-3 kids each play to block the few kids who consistently made tackles, and the D just got worn out. For those of us who remember the glory years, it's been a rough roller coaster ride.

As for the current coaches, I can quibble here and there (esp with offensive play calling), but you could have put Lombardi and Belichek on the sidelines and they maybe would have gone 3-4. No chance they could have beaten the Concorde teams.

The seniors deserved better. Hopefully, they will use the experience to develop a sense of grit and resiliency in life as playing in a down football program is not the worst thing that can happen to you.

Do the seniors deserve better? Yes no doubt! However YIU stated they could’ve won 4 games in 2019 (Morgan’s first year). If they could’ve won games like that, why would you change the whole offensive staff etc. if you felt it was working? Maybe the coaches decided to go somewhere else, or they couldn’t work with Morgan, who knows. Bottom line is, they scored less points in 2019 then this past season and didn’t improve when one could say that had almost the same talent. You have a QB with an arm and receivers who could catch. A pretty decent offensive line. They lost to Fairfax who doesn’t have a lot of players, barely beat Langley, and got blown out throughout the season. Mel Morgan is, at best, an assistant coach and not Head Coach material. He’s a Defensive Coach and he’s calling the Offense!?! Makes no sense!! If Woodson hires this guy then they’re idiots!

Here’s a question, is Woodson a better job than Oakton? If you say yes, please explain. As far as demographics, Oakton’s not much different than Madison, and both have VYI as a feeder program. No way Woodson draws better football players. I would think once the remodel is complete, Oakton would be far better, facility wise. There is plenty of money floating around Oakton to support the program. I just can’t see WTW being a step up. Maybe when you look at the conferences top to bottom you have a couple more easy wins, but that’s arguable.

NorthernVA is reaping the rewards of Liberal Fear tactics. Don't forget, they wanted to Cancel football. Before Covid, it was head injuries caused by football!!

Parents are not letting their kids play youth football at the same levels they did in the past. Additionally, kids have a lot more options than playing football in this area!! The connections to the community do not rely on football games when families have so many other things to do!

Last, ethnic diversity will continue to lessen the community's interest in football. As you all know Asian & Latino's exceed black populations in most schools. White kids participation levels continue to decrease.

Population density will kerp football alive but the quality will continue to decrease as these noted trends continue. So, for those communities that have football-centric commitments, I expect increased dominance. One only needs to look at the other clases to see what's happening. Class 5 Highland Springs & Maury, Class 4 Lake Taylor. Class 3 Hopewell.

Update on Hayfield- Coach Jennings had to scoot out of practice a little early last night to go home and update his resume for the Hayfield interview. Of course, he also put some time into last minute prep for the Regional Title game his current team is about to play on Friday night. He would never step into another job before finishing his current job. Just the kind of guy he is, you know what I mean. All I can say is look out Northern Region and the state of Virginia. When this hardworking, bull of a man takes over the Hawk Nation, the wins are going to start piling up, just like he did at SOCO. He is the primary reason for the success of SOCO. They only started winning meaningful games once he arrived 5 years ago. Now they are losing him to their cross town rivals, who will now be set up to dominate SOCO in this annual game. All I can say is do not wait Hayfield Admin, the man, the myth, the legend Dan Jennings is ready to rumble with the heavy weights of the Northern Region. You better scoop him up before somebody else does.

neutral field but Madison will Host South County.

South County (Lorton, VA) 22,
Madison [James] (Vienna, VA) 14

I expect a closer game. Robinson wore out South County at the end of the game & had a real chance to tie or win that game. It's very possible Madison will have the edge next week!

To be fair Madison completely ran every pass play away from him with a rollout or a quick one step fade/out. Other than that they just ran the ball 90 percent of the time and it worked.

Robinson exposed South County. They were gased the whole 4th quarter. If the Rams had any kind of a passing game, they'd be playing next week vs Madison!! If there has been a theme for this shortened season, it's been that teams that are better conditioned have prevailed in the 4th quarter!! That's why Westfield is done & why South County's won't repeat this year.

Cut blocking is part of football and is legal. Watch Robinson play they cut block all the time. When these guys get to the next level it is legal to cut anywhere on the field.

Blocking Below the Waist in Free-Blocking Zone Addressed in High School Football Rules
By NFHS on February 05, 2021

The rule regarding blocking below the waist in the free-blocking zone in high school football has been revised for the upcoming 2021 season.

This rule change was recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its January 10-12 meeting, which was held virtually this year. This change to the 2021 NFHS Football Rules Book was subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

As a result of numerous interpretations of current language regarding blocking below the waist in the free-blocking zone, the committee approved another condition in Rule 2-17-2 that must be met for a legal block below the waist in the free-blocking zone, which is a rectangular area extending laterally 4 yards either side of the spot of the snap and 3 yards behind each line of scrimmage.

The new requirement (2-17-2c) is that the block must be an immediate, initial action following the snap. Under the current rule, an offensive lineman can delay and then block below the waist if the ball is still in the zone. In the committee’s ongoing quest to minimize risk in high school football, the change was approved to require the block to be immediate.

“This change makes it easier for game officials to judge the legality of blocks below the waist and minimizes risk of injury for participants,” said Bob Colgate, NFHS director of sports and sports medicine and liaison to the Football Rules Committee. “This change lets game officials observe the block and make a call without having to determine where the ball is and what formation the offense lined up in.”

Blocking in the back continues to be legal in the free-blocking zone by offensive linemen who are on the line of scrimmage and in the zone at the snap, against defensive players who are in the zone at the snap and the contact is in the zone.

The committee noted there has been no criticism of the current rules governing blocks in the back as they are delayed blocks by nature, above the waist and considered to be a safe and necessary legal block.

“I believe this rule change will help make the interpretation of blocking below the waist consistent across the country starting next football season,” said Richard McWhirter, chair of the NFHS Football Rules Committee and assistant executive director of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

The Football Rules Committee is composed of one representative from each of the NFHS member state associations that use NFHS playing rules, along with representatives from the NFHS Coaches Association, NFHS Officials Association and NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

A complete listing of the football rules changes will be available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org. Click on “Activities & Sports” at the top of the home page and select “Football.”

According to the most recent NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, 11-player football is the most popular high school sport for boys with 1,006,013 participants in 14,247 schools nationwide. In addition, there were 31,221 boys who participated in 6-, 8- and 9-player football, along with 2,604 girls in all four versions of the game for a grand total of 1,039,828.

The seasoned officiating crew didn’t seem to have an issue with either teams’ blocking last night... perhaps you could send them a memo...

Maybe you could read a couple words in the very first paragraphs.

1. Proposed changes for 2021 Football season!!!

2. This year, even delayed cut blocks are okay as long as they occur in the free block zone.

So, wait until you see a D- Lineman has his leg planted firmly in the turf & dive right at his legs all night. No problem. There'll be a bit of a delay while they cart him off the field & bring in the next victim!!

If a defensive lineman isn't prepared to take on a legal cut block that's his position coaches fault. Teams trade film and are well aware of one another's blocking schemes. Cut blocks are used to slow defensive lineman down and it's the defensive coaches job to teach his Ayers how to defend themselves.

It's like a broken clock. Every year people are on here complaining about Madison and Robinson blocking techniques.

To OS....I know we like to throw jabs at each other on this forum, but my condolences to Oscar Smith as they lost a member of their football program earlier this season. The players showed class in an interview, dedicating and wanting to win a state championship for him.
