Westfield's offense doesn't look too great against a defense that doesn't look great either not sure if weather has played a huge factor but that might not help Westfield's case on offense much. Still a lot to play

Westfield looked bad tonight. Give props to LB , who looked average. Weather wasn’t favorable either. It’s early and I’m sure both teams will improve. Haven’t seen a QB from WF be so bad.

That's a nice win for Lake Braddock. A really poor performance all around by Westfield. Special teams was a disaster.

Definitely agree. That rb is super legit. Why not give him 60 carries? Both teams looked poor. The level of competition is a good 30% lower than last year. I also doubt Braddock will be able to beat SoCo

The other thing that looked a little suspect on Westfield was their speed and coverage in the secondary. After watching the Centreville/South Lakes game... the Wildcats would have a field day if they don't get that fixed.

Legall does not go both ways. He was successful early on because he went more up the middle, then for some reason (either play calling or Lake Braddock's defense adjusted) he started trying to spread out the play and that resulted in less yardage when the LB second level used their quickness to come up untouched and stop him from getting the big gains. And as to not using him more often, once Lake Braddock was able to do that Westfield faced a lot of long yardage situations and had to pass more often - and pass into a good Lake Braddock secondary that did break up two sure TD passes in the 3rd quarter.

Well, it's obvious we should just give the State Title to Lake Braddock and not bother playing any more games. After all, the best (you fill in) in the state just beat Westfield in the first game of the season.

One win does not a State title make. What I saw was both teams were average. It is the first game of the year on a rainy night and both teams were less than sterling as a result. Bruins took advantage of the KO return for a TD and then the final touchdown run looked great. Not a lot going on otherwise.

Westfield looked great running the ball up the middle, less so attempting to go around the corner. Passing was a joke, and no kicking game. A lot of work is going to be needed to get the most out of the players.

Come the end of the season, let's see who makes the run to region then State. I know right now it won't be either of these two teams if they continue to play like last night.

You just made my point from earlier posts!! Westfield is done! They've been exposed. Without the team speed and strong Defensive Ends, their competitors will exploit their weaknesses regularly. Whether they can duplicate L. Braddock's DB play and have a QB that can make those big run plays is another matter! Westfield could make it to the playoffs but a deep run is unlikely!!

So what team WILL now be favorites to represent the Northern Region? The Bruins have the pieces. Let's see what else develops during this shortened season!

So after the Smackdown of Westfield, its on to the next game, Robinson!

This used to be a rivalry game, but the Bruins have dominated Robinson the last 4-5 years its just another tic on the schedule. Doc and staff will have the team ready for another Friday night Smackdown. Tune in early as this will be over by the 2nd quarter, final 45-7 Bruins.

I wouldn’t get too excited about Lake Braddock’s secondary. An average QB makes those passes and there’s two touchdowns and several more first downs. Time will tell.

Good game BruinsMama. Lake Braddock does have a good team. I don't think either team played great, but it was their first game and it was raining.


Here are my takeaways from the game:

Lake Braddock
- Awesome QB with a good arm. He is fast and he runs the ball hard.
- Defense was good, not great. They made 28 from Westfield look like Jim Brown.
- Their receivers can't catch wet balls, but they have good speed.
- They look like a solid playoff team, but probably not State Championship material.

Westfield
- Why would you pass the ball when you averaged like 7 yards per carry?
- Special teams were awful. Go get a soccer kid that can the ball off.
- I don't know how many carries 28 had, but it wasn't enough. He's their best player.

Cville defense struggling against a bad TC team. Not a good look. This Cville team can be pretty good with all the offensive weapons they have but I don’t even know if this team is even better than last years team. This game is 14-14 if TC doesn’t fumble.

Centreville is able to flood the passing lanes with a number of solid athletes. They will certainly be competitive against the likes of Madison, WF, etc. Will be interesting to watch.

Not sure their coordinator's their problem. They don't have the QB to make those timing passes they've been able to rely on in the past. Their defense is going to see everyone run off tackle and pass out into their flats until Westfield figures out how to stop it!!

Centreville with their air raid offense could quickly blow this game up. However Chantilly has not been tested yet and even though they lost the vast majority of their starters they don’t look like the worst team in the northern region. If Chantilly can find out a way to stop the pass they have a very real chance of winning. Also will see how Centreville’s defense is against a run heavy team.

West Potomac @ Westfield (-21)
After a big loss how will the bulldogs respond probably by killing west po. They did beat Lewis (formerly Lee) soundly last week so this is west po’s first real test.

Madison (-17) @ Oakton
Oakton looked atrocious against Fairfax played better against langley the offense was clicking but o line struggles and major defensive inconsistencies will not keep oakton competitive for the whole game.

Robinson @ Lake Braddock (-25)
Robinson had a blow out win last week but Lake Braddock got through the first game unscathed and played Westfield look for them to beat the hype out of this Robinson team.

Soco (-40) @ Woodson
Woodson is terrible at football soco is not

Annandale(-13) @ Hayfield
Annandale may have finally turned the corner of under .500 seasons hayfield looks better than last year but hasn’t returned to former glory. (No Brian Cobbs is a large contributing factor)

Langley only scored 14 offensive points last year I’ll chalk this up to not being fully prepared for the first game like a lot of teams were. Langley looked decent look for them to get in the win column against Herndon.

Falls Church(-21) @ Justice
Aziz and Falls Church rallied and kept their playoff hopes alive I don’t think Marshall is absolutely terrible and justice isn’t very impressive look for FC to keep rolling next week.

Centreville defense? What defense? They let SL run on them a lot; I did not see the TCW game. And CV has no running game to speak of. They have a lot of very capable receivers, but that is about it.

I did not realize that some schools were playing 2 games last week. Will include the other finals although I did not publish spreads. Hopefully we can get back to a full slate on Friday nights from here on out.

- Centreville won by 6, 32-26. I watched a little of this game and was impressed with #11 Kuzemka after coming off an ACL last season. He had some big catches late.(Centreville also beat T.C. 35-14 on Saturday)

- SoCo won 48-12. Hayfield scored on the opening kick off and got completely shut down from that point. What has happened to Hayfield?

- Madison won and covered, 37-0.

- Annandale won 28-6. Woodson has also taken a big step back, I think Annandale has improved though. They also beat Herndon 38-0 on Saturday.

- Wakefield wins over WL 12-7 and adds on another win over Edison 34-14 on Saturday.

11. West Springfield (-24) @ Stuart
- West Springfield rolls Justice 40-0. Justice beats Lewis 40-6 on Saturday. Man, these new school names don't feel right, so excuse me guys but I'm sticking with the original names.

12. Westfield (-9) @ Lake Braddock
- Have yourself a day, Braddock! They won 26-7. Did anyone see this game and can break down what happened? Didn't expect that from Westfield.

- MV wins over Yorktown 34-28. MV then lost to McLean 28-14.

Long version of Westfield vs Lake Braddock from VaPreps

"The weather hampered both teams and it caused a lot of mistakes in the first half, but in the second half Lake Braddock solved the Westfield defense, while WF failed to convert several 4th downs in LB territory and LB pulled away for a very solid 26-7 win.

Note: I don't have rosters so in some cases I will only reference player numbers for those players whose names I don't know or did not hear on the PA system.

Westfield took the opening KO and fumbled the ball out of bounds at the 3 yard line to put themselves in an early hole. After three unsuccessful plays WF punted and LB took over on the LB 31 yard line. LB drove into WF territory where the drive stalled and LB's #16 kicked a 36 yard FG to put LB on top 3-0 at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter. WF then drove 65 yards, highlighted by a 54 yard Legall TD run, to go on top 7-3 (Williams XP) with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter. LB took the KO and started their next drive at their own 18 yard line, moving to the WF 45 where they faced a 4th and 2, which Edwards converted with a 4 yard run to keep the drive alive. A few plays later LB again stalled and #16 kicked his second FG, this time a 29 yarder, and LB cut the lead to 7-6 with 10:30 remaining in the half. WF had a penalty on the ensuing KO and a solid return was nullified, pushing them back to their own 8 yard line. They did manage to march about 50 yards when Toveil hit a wide open Richards across the middle, but Richards took just two steps on the way to a sure TD and the ball popped out, with LB recovering on their own 25 yard line. LB then went to work and as they neared midfield Edwards found LB WR #1 behind the WF defense and he caught a long pass. But just inches short of the goal line he fumbled the ball into the end zone when WF's McClain tackled him from behind. It was questionable whether or not he crossed the goal line, but the official said no and WF's McClain recovered the ball for a touchback. WF, starting on their own 20, then moved down field and faced a 4th and 7 at the LB 37 yard line. Toveil found St Germain over the middle, but the completed pass was about a foot short and LB took over at the LB 31. Time ran out and the teams went to the end zones for halftime with WF leading, 7-6.

LB received the second half KO and LB's Corey ripped off a 70-75 yard KO return to put LB ahead 12-7 (2XP pass attempt knocked down by WF's Richards) at the 11:47 mark of the third quarter. WF took the LB KO to the WF 27 yard line and started to move downfield to the LB 37 yard line where they faced a 4th and short. WF's RB Keys ran up the middle for two yards and the drive stayed alive until WF faced another 4th down at the LB 15, this time 4th and 8 but Toveil's pass fell incomplete. LB then took over and went three and out to punt the ball back to WF at the WF 39 yard line. WF stalled again on this drive, facing a 4th and 6 at the LB 25, and Toveil's pass was again incomplete. LB then put together a 75 yard scoring drive capped by a 44 yard TD run by LB's Edwards to go up comfortably at 19-7 (#16 XP) with just 8:33 to play. WF started their next drive on their own 20 after the KO went for a touchback, and Toveil was eventually picked off by LB's Cousins at the LB 35 to kill another WF drive. LB then drove 65 yards, with LB's Minor getting a 34 yard TD run around the left side to seal the game, 26-7 (#16 XP) with 3:03 remaining. On WF's next drive they moved to near midfield when a bad snap cost them almost 15 yards and put them back inside their own 40 yard line. Two plays later, Corey intercepted Toveil at the LB 41 when WF went for it on 4th and long. LB then went into their victory formation and ran out the clock for the win."

Short version of Westfield vs Lake Braddock from VaPreps:

"Westfield's components were very effective in a few of their usual areas. Very effective in the trenches in the middle of their run offense & defense. But Lake Braddock won the night getting to the Bulldog's edges.

The Bruins slowed the run only slightly in the 2nd half but their pass D stiffened significantly! The Westfield QB made some really bad throws that seemed desperate and closed the deal for Lake Braddock."

It was added that Westfield's kicking game sucked & that was pretty true. So, 2 components of Westfield's reliable & go to areas of attack were really poor!

I agree. AND with Centreville & Madison left on the Bulldogs schedule, they have an uphill battle to get in the playoffs!!

Its the game of week, but I think we all know now anytime Doc and the Bruins play, it is always the game of the week.

The best staff in the state is coming off a blow out win over Westfield and will not be taking their foot off the gas for Robinson.

I think everyone saw what Billy (best QB in the state) did to the Westfield defense on a very wet field, well extended forecast calls for dry weather, my condolences to the Robinson defense.

I see this being a blow out early, with a final score of 45-7, with Doc and the Bruins winning easy

No. The PW schoolsin 6B are all playing within the county. There are a few crossover games between 6C/6D but not many.
