Got my $220 check today. Nice to receive, as I heard it was refunded to all VA taxpayers. Either $110 if single, $220 if married. FYI

Do poorish people get one too? That's fucked if I'm here paying $15k in state taxes and only get $110 back and someone paying $2k gets the same amount.

Vote Democrat then you won't have to be put out by that extra $110. It will go to the person paying $2k as well.

it’s just going to convince people to make less money, that way their 110 dollars will seem like a better deal

On the plus side the "poor" will spend it all on lottery tickets so the state gets it back anyway.

So does this count as taxable unearned income? And it is not like you can pretend you did not get it as the State sent it to you. Why didn't they just give everyone a $110 automatic deduction on their 2019 taxes? Think of what it cost to calculate, generate and mail all of those checks. Stupid.

It is taxable if you took the deduction for your state taxes.

Not everybody who filed in 2018 will file in 2018.

Meanwhile VA roads suck.
They can keep my $110 if they get rid of traffic on 495. I don't see VDOT doing shit.

Your post ended with the "downsized" spelling of the state name...

1. It will be a different group of people filing for 2019 so even though a tax CREDIT sounds like a good idea, it would be difficult to do. There would be a whole group who left the state who would be entitled to it, but might not know it. The tax software might catch it, but some people do a form by hand. People who died in 2018 and won’t file a 2019 return won’t be able to get it that way. Then there would be people moving into the state who would NOT be entitled to it but might think they are. Hard to track. It’s a mess, that’s for sure.
2. Do we claim this as income for 2019?
Re: Did you get your $110 (or $220, if married) from the VA Tax Refund?
Never saw so many unhappy people over a $110 refund check.
1- the refund is a short term (1 yr) solution that adjusts to the changes in the federal tax law. (The fed law was finalized too late to reprint VA forms.)
2- you must have paid VA taxes for tax year 2018 and your refund will be the lesser of what you paid or $110. (If you paid $50, you get $50; $120 you get $110.)
3- Going forward, your personal deduction is increased to adjust to fed tax law.
4- If you are still pissed off that you got a refund, give it to charity or send me a check.

I for one am not unhappy. Do I claim this as income for 2019? My guess is yes.

Bob Malm sure as hell didn’t donate his refund to Grace Church.
Just wondering if he’s going to declare his farewell $$$ as income.
Hmmmm
Re: Did you get your $110 (or $220, if married) from the VA Tax Refund?
It's a tax refund. AFIK, if you got a $300 refund when you filed in Apr, you now have a $410 refund.

If you claimed your state taxes as a deduction on your federal 1040 last year, yes.
Because when you claimed that deduction, it became income you weren’t taxed on. And now you’re getting it back. So a refund is added back as income for this year.
