I don’t think Braddock has the defense to hold WTW to 10 points. I believe it will be a shootout.

Why all the hating on WTW? Must be the doc people trying to make excuses why he didn't win at WTW. I was here for the doc era, wasn't very pretty

WTW had not had a winning season in a decade prior to last year. This HC has done a great job with this program
If you call Westfield, LB, SoCo, Robo Mt Vernon all playoff teams last year, an easy schedule, then ok

The HC did not try to leave this off season, you are making that up
The DC left to take the HC job at Oakton, so no one jumped ship as you say.

Your HC applied, interviewed, and was a finalist for an out of state job that he wasn’t selected fir. That’s a fact. Former DC took a HC job at one of the most difficult places to win in the county, coming of a historic 0-10 season. If these guys thought things were going to be better at WTW they normally don’t try to leave.

So he applied for an out of state job, so that just means its better opportunity for his family, not a knock on WTW. He didn't apply for any local jobs.

How about this, ask the former DC why he took the HC job, I will guarantee you he will say, because he wanted the opportunity to be a HC, not because thing were not going to be good WTW.

Just like last year, no one thought WTW would win more then 4-5 games, well they won 11. So they play the underdog role pretty well

Fairfax County is a terrible place to be a HS football coach. Limited resources, communities who aren’t really into football, and terrible pay. Why do you think most coaches around here are in their 30’s, when coaches at schools their size down in southern VA or other states are in their 50’s or 60’s. The pay is embarrassing. There are a few exceptions, and I’m sure those guys have reasons for sticking around.

I don’t think Van Aker is from this area, and he is a well respected coach. He is young with a family, so don’t be surprised when he gets job down south or somewhere like Ohio, where he can make some money and have a better life for his family.

Couldn’t agree more. Coaching in football NOVA is tough. Obnoxious parents, high percentage of entitled kids, little support from the school system, and very low pay. I don’t think there will be many long term coaches in this area after this last wave retires.

Entitled kids...more like whiny coaches! Many HC have jobs at the school making $100K or more as weightlifting instructors, c’mon that’s bs. Sit around and lift weights drink protein shakes and watch game film. Stop your bitching. Some of the more motivated HC may teach drivers ed. Not a bad gig if you ask me. Plus summers off.

Woodson will beat Braddock.... They have Westfield as their HC game. That’s tough. I’m sick of all the LB hype. They’ve been sorry ever since the old coach left. Hayfield will give WTW a run for their money.

Try posting current salaries not ones that are several years old. Still not close to what the one poster said, close to 100G for not doing much during the day.

The salaries listed include teaching salary plus coaching stipend. For example last season as a non teacher coach I made $1850

I'll give them some credit. They were one play from beating Freedom. I honestly thought they'd get blown out. I don't know how much will carry over to this season.

Wrong about LB. No one is sorry and Coach P’s kids are gone now. Besides it’s no one’s fault who currently works at LB so try to let it go. The kids are really happy and they’re doing well.

Looks like the 6A Northern Region is wide open for the taking!!!??? West Potamac beat Westfield 25-14 at the Bulldogs own 7on7 tournament!!! Did Noah Kim play or has the talent just fallen off the cliff @ Westfield?

First, 7vs7 is useless as a predictor of regular season results. Second, I was there and WF had simply one bad possession, and in 7vs7 that is all that it takes. Down 19-14, WF with the ball. WP has not shown any ability to stop WF (a trend for almost every possession of all 8 of the 7vs7 games they played). A penalty (REC pushed off on the DB) results in loss of down and a 5 yard penalty (7vs7 rules). Second down is a 23 yard pass about 2 yards short of the line to gain. 3rd down is a pass where the receiver (a RB) loses sight of the line to gain. He catches the ball, but given that 7vs7 is touch, cannot turn up field to gain the inches he needs. On 4th down, Kim and Richards run a quick out on a timing pattern and they just miss with less than a minute. WP scored a final TD when basically gave up since they couldn't win unless WP did something extremely foolish like throw they ball directly to a WF defender-they aren't that dumb.

Trust me, WF will be fine. Kim is fine. They will be better at RB than last year in Daniels, Ritchie, and last year's FR RB (who was better than dominant-against CV, 6 touches, 6 TDs) but he may move to another position. At WR, they have two very good receivers, Richards and a transfer from SJ-Manassas. We will see in Week 9.

Prior to last year, WF never won their 7-7 tournament & it seem to work out well for them. Simmons does not place much stock into these exercises. Many schools however do, they will spend their Green Day’s in spring time working on pass plays specific for these tournaments. MTV, FCHS, SL, JCHS, BRHS, WPHS it name a few do that and how well has that served them when real football starts? WF doesn’t even do any other passing leagues like every other school. CHS participated all the way out in LOCO with schools like stone bridge briar woods riverside and how many games have they won. All this is for fun and try to get more kids to come out and raise some money. No one has ever won States in June. Ease up fella.

Why do we have this talk every year about 7x7? Everyone can see that historically there is zero correlation between doing well in 7x7 and having a championship program. At best it can tell you which teams are not going to totally suck but even that isn’t a given. 7x7 is basically just fun – not football.

Westfield actually was called for a WR pushing off? How could that be? After all, that's their go to play. The Ref must not have been trained properly to keep that yellow hanky in his pocket when the Bulldogs need a critical 1st down or TD!!! If Westfield starts getting calls against that isolation play, they're in trouble.

Westfield ALSO, has in the past enjoyed a very formidable OL/DL combined with top notch linebackers. So, 7on7 play wasn't as important with a run stopping team that could run well at well, too. But, their drop-off in line play caught up with them last year and their linebackers / DB's were not able to cover up that weakness in 2018.

2019 Westfield will be well coached but do they have the athletes to make up for what could be another year of difficulties for them? I'm not hearing of any "All Region" candidates (except Kim). If I'm missing something, let's put some names out for the Bulldogs that will help the brush off the rumors that their Glory days are behind them.

99.9% of the hs in VA wish they had Westfields “troubles” you have no idea how dumb you sound. WF Qb doesn’t get hurt they win that game by 12 at least.
I didn’t know AR candidates were selected off 7-7 tournaments in June.

Agree, Madison does not fare well at these events but they are one of the most solid programs and seem to be closing the gap on WF and wouldn’t be surprised to see them knock off the Bulldogs for the Concord title this season.

Kim got hurt because his OL couldn't protect him. It was an unfortunate outcome but predictable.

No response to that favorable "no call" isolation play they so heavily rely upon?

And as for All Region Candidates, I guess you go nothin, right.

Look, Westfield will be very good, but that's not the same as great. Let's see who's playing in December...

Is this coach Curry? Dude you guys got to stop obsessing over WF, worry about your own squad. I guarantee it won’t be Chantilly playing in Dec. you guys won’t even make it past 11-9-19.

LOL! It might not be Curry but it's definitely the Chantilly guy.

LB should be the favorite in 2019, Doc has said this is the most talented team LB has had. With Doc's reputation in the region, that should carry a lot of weight.

With a rising JR QB, whos is being recruited by P5 schools, a TE who has committed to Michigan, 2 outstanding receivers, they will have 1 powerful offense

Doc has also added a few new coaches that will fit in nicely with the already "best staff in the state"

If you are a betting person, bet the house on LB in 2019, you cant lose!

Madison will do what Madison does...lose to Stone Bridge, have a tough game but win against Centreville, push Westfield to the limit (...and maybe this year they win one, maybe not)...and run the table on the rest of the games. Probably will get to the regional semi-final if not the final again.

Losing to Stone Bridge is likely going to be no big deal. It may toughen them up for the post season. With Highland Springs playing 3 of the 4 Top 6A South Teams, there is a good chance that no 6A Team will go undefeated in 2019.

The one year I really watched 7on7 was 2012. My son played at Westfield and they were not that good at all in 7on7. They went on to go 12-0 and lose in the Regional Championship. Had a balanced run/pass attack that isn't featured in 7on7. No barometer at all for what a team will be like.

Warhawks will not struggle against C’ville this year. We are going to absolutely destroy Wildcats. So bad that Wildcats will be 1 & done playoffs.

We will fare better against SB this time. Mickey hasn’t quite got all the transfers that he normally does (split between BRun & Tusky)& we will beat WF for district title this year.

Who you got at RB this year?

Transfer season isn't over and a lot of last year's transfers are returning. SB will be loaded as usual.

SB has Moore (transfer from Rock Ridge) and Cole (transfer from Oakton) returning. They both have Div 1 offers so they are set there. Wiles (transfer from Riverside) will be at QB. He also already has Div 1 offers. Felton at WR has Div 1 offers.

What teams have the most returning talent combined with s group of underclassmen with impact level recognition for the 2019 season? Given the lack of discussion on this sight seems to indicate some level of a power shift to teams outside of Fairfax County.?

PWCO has the deepest talent, size and speed. Woodbridge, Freedom W, Stonewall, Hylton & Patriot, can beat FXCO top teams, LB, CVHS, WF, Madison, SOCO. Plus PWCO teams/coach’s recruit, they are as bad as LOCO schools when it comes to poaching talent especially from lesser teams. They will cherry pick the top kid or 2 from the bad teams.

Preseason top 10

1. Freedom-W - they lost Tyquan & Fuga but next kids up are just as good. Deep talent pool.

2. Woodbridge - dozen D1, P5 kids on that roster. Can QB keep turnovers down.

3. WF - Bulldogs go as their QB goes, also losing their DC (again)& other top def asst coach finally catch up to them?

4. Madison - need to beat WF to prove they are legit & get that monkey off their backs.

5. Stonewall - a ton of talent, not going to outrun them.

6. Hylton - they are always a threat to beat any team.

7. Patriot - new coach, depends on quickly kids adjust to him

8. LB - they have some realt good pieces, it’s a matter of keeping up with the physics teams, lack of toughness.

9. CVHS - new coach, can he bring his success cross town?

10. Hayfield- WPO-WTW-SOCO-ROBO. All pretty evenly matched.

Centreville ranked too low. Stonewall ranked too high. Centreville is 9-0 versus PWCO teams in the last 6 seasons. Also, Westfield will be lucky to make it to 6 wins this year.

I think this is one of the better assessments I’ve ever read on this site. Clear, concise, not attacking. Well done. The only place I’ll disagree is I think stonewall is too high. They are the third most talented but defensively with how much old school cover 3 they play, they’re in for a hard time.against good teams

In fact, the Concorde District is 18-4 versus PWCO teams in the last six years.

That was then, this is now. There’s been a shift in talent and numbers past few years and now the coaching is catching up to that talent, PWCO is taking over. #webuiltdifferent

WF losing 1,2,5,8,9 just to name a few. Not only that but they played multiple positions.

CVHS- Egbers, Wright,Kuzemka, Thomas, Horner and others

Madison- Counts, Wysocki, the RB, and others. Counts & Wysocki weren’t the flashy players with multiple offers but they were smart tough hard nosed football players that brought a physicality to the team an identity, kids like that are hard to replace and not sure They have enough to fill those shoes. Actually same could be said about each of the top teams in Concorde. Morin’s, Asante, Dishun, McClain. Gabe and Gavin Lamar, Edmunds, not sure any of those schools have the kids to replace all that talent that’s left C’ville & WF.

Patriot district is on the rise and May over take Concord as toughest division in fxco but don’t think they stack up well against PWCO with the athletes and speed they have over there.

A shift in talent. Yep, basically a handful of coaches building super teams by recruiting. So that part is true.

CVHS will def have a rocky road early on. Will be lucky to finish 3rd in Concord.

WF will do ok. Biggest sleeper is Chantilly. Curry has made it a point to knock Bulldogs off, if he can prep them to play the same way against Madison and C’ville they can make a playoff spot but team has to be more consistent and get up for more than just 1 game.

ROBO is intriguing. Word has it they are really trying to be a more complete balanced offense, if they can complete passes at a decent clip they are a payoff team.

Hatfield- really good athletes, good young arm. If they stay mentally tough and reduce personal fouls they could be playoff team.

WTW- came out of nowhere can they sustain it? One of the better qb’s should keep them in games. Coach doesn’t get enough credit for job he has done. Like trying to win at Duke

WPO- they looked good in 7-7 tournament but let’s see how lines are. They started off well last year then once qb went down the whole team quit

Stonewall- lots of talent but something missing (coaching/chemistry) - Don’t think they are worthy of #3 spot.

TC & MTV are the 2 is pick as being overlooked.

SL- the most overrated team. They play in terrible district.

Yorktown- really good qb can make all the difference. Kid has size and arm. Sleeper team made playoffs last year expect them to do same and win a game or 2

Talented transfers can hurt a team's chemistry which may not show up until the later playoff games. The first time a team really faces adversity at the hands of a team that's used to playing tough games, the problems start appearing. The time I've seen recruiting pay off is when the talent gets ridiculous. 2014 Ocean Lakes, 2018 Manchester. The Highland Springs Teams have all had a lot of transfers, too. But, it may not have mattered much with those teams. Their feeder program has produced outstanding talent to help build them to having the best team in VA.

Looking at the adjustment to the 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D Classes: it appears that with the claim that the balance of talent is shifting toward the PW County schools, that the Northern Region schools will avoid their tougher opponents until the State Final Championship game!!!

Additionally, the previous week in the South Region Finals, there is a good chance that a PW County school will have to play their Championship game in the South Side of Hampton Roads OR they'll host a team traveling up from there!!! The last time Freedom PW made that trip, they didn't come away with a win vs 4A Lake Taylor (Early Favorits to win Class 4 in 2019)

Lake Braddock basketball team played in the state championship finals, the baseball team won the state championship, how come the football team doesn't do as well? Damn! Leave it alone. No one but trolls say “best staff in the state” just to taunt LBSS fans and try to make them look snobby. No one there says that. They have really good people who care about kids there. They all love Coach Doc and his staff.

The ghosts continue to haunt the place. Look how many principals they’ve had. Like 7 in 3 years or something ridiculous. The new one is suppose to leave by Halloween. He’s just there to remove people who supported Dave Thomas.

Can we just talk football without the bull? I know kids on the LBSS football team. What they’re getting compared to what my kid gets? I’d move my son over there to Braddock to play if I could find a way.

Yeah, I live in PW and have been around HS athletics in NVA for many years. There is no transition at all as there is talented kids all over NVA.
PWC schools: A few East end PWC schools are on the rise because the coaches there have managed to skate on the thin ice that doesn’t get them caught attracting talent from outside their school boundaries. If you look at their rosters you will see kids with addresses outside of their community (specialty program) and with very recent transfer of residence.
This is being done by coaches using all the resources they have to get in between the ears of talented players families. Coaching AAU or having assistant coaches coaching AAU teams. Parents inside the community are recruiting talented kids and teaching the families how to transfer in to their communities without getting caught. And these folks report to the coaches.
One of these coaches has taken advantage of owning a Football College recruiting service to get kids to his program.
One of these coaches has gone to another County to the South and recruited talented kids using the homeless rule which allows kids to go wherever they want.

There are other behind the scene negatives that are talked about quite often but nothing ever gets done. These coaches are smart and they just deny, deny, deny when questioned. The Administration at the schools are at fault. They allow it and I do believe they are negligent in a sense. They put to much trust and listen to the poop dished out by their coaches and ADs. Not a lot of integrity as they just care about winning with kids from all over. It would be great if HS Football and Basketball rosters given out at games would start listing hometowns like college. Because that is where it is going.

So no sir or ma’am talent isn’t transitioning to PW. Or should I say a couple schools in PW. I’m not mad at these schools, just answering the question. I see there is an PW individual on this post that enjoys poking the Fairfax bear.

PWCo has way better athletes than FXCO. We have #1LB in the country! Not just the state. We’ve had way more kids to to major D1 schools in past few years than our counterparts. Only thing that’s been the difference is coaching but now that gap has finally been closed. I will give you al credit. Only position they got us at is Qb but that gap too will be closed, either developed or recruited! Hate us cuz you ain’t us! #webuiltdifferent

That era of Ocean Lakes & Bishop Sullivan having prolific recruiting and transfers is OVER/DONE. It still occurs but at no greater rate than any other region in the state. Manchester definitely won their dominant state title in 2018 with the model of recruiting til they win. It's interesting that the Class 6 Northern Regional Champions will have to win the South Region Title in 2019 to get back in the State Title Game.

Freedom PW is returning quite a few players on Defense and Offense. The Eagles Scrimmage the best Team in VA, Highland Springs. Let's see how they do in that game but their toughest regular season game will likely be vs another Eagles team. Colonial Forge will likely be playing for the Class 6B title against them in November!

With Woodbridge & Freedom in the South Region now, who are the Favorites to represent the Northern Region?

The South will be represented by:

Class 6A
Ocean Lakes
Oscar Smith
Thomas Dale

Class 6B
Colonial Forge
Freedom PW
Woodbridge

*Manchester is now in Class 5B

Play with the kids in your jurisdiction. Championships mean poop if you bring in kids outside. Booooooooo. Integrity is extinct.

Why Westfield Bulldogs 3-peat is even more impressive if you think about it, not 1 transfer, each starter came up thru their ranks.

FXCO, no particular order, CVHS, LB, SOCO, Hayfield.
PWCO- Woodbridge, Freedom-W, Hylton
LOCO- Stone Bridge, Tusky, Broad Run, Dominion, Riverside

How so? Tell me where I’m off.

LB under coach P always has a kid that should’ve gone elsewhere. QB’s, RB’s that should’ve gone to Alexandria schools.

Coach Haddock, where do think he got his RB’s & LB’s from also sprinkle in a OL here and there, when that recruiting well ran dry you saw how he slipped back to the pack.

Hayfield - coach Henderson, need I say more. Learned and honed his skills as an asst coach at WPO & LB. just this last season he stole QB from LB & Oakton year before he took a Qb from Spotsylvania area.

SOCO- Coach PA is well known to cross into PWCO as well as hold illegal practices.

LB doesn’t get transfers like that anymore, not many transfer there, they had 3 kids transfer out in fact. And soco has a lot of kids that live on the border with PWCO but aren’t slatted for PWCO. In loudoun, broad run s very similar to WF it’s homegrown. Dominion had transfers in 2015, haven’t in years. They’ve had more transfer out with the new coach coming in. Riverside and SB and tusky do get a crap ton

Out of all the transfers, I wonder how many still reside at their old address, and how many legit moved into a school’s district. SB is by far the biggest teachers when it comes to recruits. They win the northern region transfer title & Ocean Lakes wins the southern region.

I know this isn’t local, but Highland Springs is pretty damn impressive. What is it, 4 state titles in a row? I bet they’re recruiting down there. They play @ Oscar Smith this year. Should be a great game

Ocean Lakes had a coaching changes about 3 years ago. That whole recruiting issue has changed over to Class 5 for Region A. Maury & Indian River by far have had the biggest influx of transfers. But they haven't come close to beating Highland Springs. The Springers definitely enjoy their share of transfers but their youth program has produced for them & the transfers vhave just added to their potency!

Transfers mostly follow a coach's success in training up talent to a high enough level where a parent feels comfortable relocating the family. I believe it's very unlikely that any family is renting an apartment somewhere and paying that extra expense. But,if a family is already renting, sure, they can and do relocate for a better opportunity for their kid. EVERY family certainly has the right if not the ability to live somewhere that best suits their family. It happens all the time for academic scenarios, why not for music, arts or sports, too?

Stone Bridge is the worst!

While you have LOCO nailed, how come you list LB? There are no transfers and there’s no recruiting there.

Transfers for athletics is very similar to what is now the NBA. Has nothing to do with coaches ability to coach. That’s false. It is all about playing on a team that already has talent and can win. College comes into play but not as in the past. Due to kids going to combines on their own and being able to be recruited anywhere.

I can tell you one thing for sure, Doc is a man of integrity, he would not allow recruiting. All of the players at LB are Doc trained with toughness, discipline and significance.

Stone Bridge is not the "worst". I don't think they'd have been so dominant the last decade or so if they weren't so good at everything they do. Getting transfers certainly could be part of that.

What exactly are they the worst at?

I think he meant to imply they have the worst ethics and sense of fair play when it comes to compliance with the spirit and letter of VHSL transfer rules.

Ethics, show me a company with ethics & you'll find one with less than 30 employees. Any larger and they're crossing ethical business practices. Whether it's choosing to source products from China while laying off US jobs. Asking a company to knock off a competitors ideas or products, or simply a salesman that poaches customers from their old employer to get a job promotion at that new company!

Grow up. There is no such fairytale of fairness and ethics. Of any area of the country that being shrewd and deceitful is necessary to get ahead, it's FFC & WDC, right?

Sorry to disappoint y'all but I'm a highly paid, seasoned veteran of business and I've seen all the above. The saying that nice guys finish last is SO true! Look out for yourself, join the best or be prepared to sit on the sidelines. Or you can just sit at home and collect government hand outs and hope Democrats establish true socialism.

What a bizarre goofball you are. You turn simple complaint about high school football recruiting violations into a rambling Darwinian screed. I totally reject your premise. Sure, this area is a cesspool but not everyone is an amoral asshole like yourself. Thank god not everyone thinks like you. And I am a Trump supporter but people should keep their political comments out of a football thread. Everyone cheats so it's ok. What a jerk...

Ok guys I’m also a Trump guy, but can we establish a gentlemen’s agreement of some sort to keep politics out of this thread? This was a good thread until a few hours ago.

I think everyone who played/has a son playing high school football in the area knows what goes on at Stone Bridge. It’s nothing new, my question would have to be this: why doesn’t anyone do anything about it & why is it allowed to continue?

Hey, I know I can go off on a drunken, banter which by definition sounds crazy. But, my point is that competition isn't going to be fair in HS football or in real life work environments. Stop complaining about it, get better, have passion, push your team/co-workers to get better.

The reality is that the kids that transfer have that highly focused and passionate intensity for success. They don't see it with their local team, so..... they go looking for it. This is the same reason kids attend a specialty area to focus and improve the academic opportunities. An IB program, Governor's School, etc. aren't really any different except for a community's idenity to their sports teams.

If there is a problem with transferring, it's that the family/ kid is severing their ties to the community that likely helped them grow to have such a bright future in the first place. But unless colleges start seeing that lack of loyalty as a significant character flaw, expect nothing to change. School Administration can not police a family's choices.

There is a problem with just transferring and running to a better athletic situation. This teaches our kids nothing. If you are cool with this please don’t bitch about society. Stay and make your team and community better. It’s BS.

I’m from up North where your town has one HS. If a kid left to go to another towns school, they weren’t welcomed back and it did not happen.

Dumbest post on this thread by far. You are literally trying to justify recruiting and wrong doing at the youth level. Idiotic. HS sports should cheat because companies do it. Say what?

They used the JROTC program for years to get transfers.

Hayfield alum checking in. To the person saying we get dirty recruits, that simply was not the case. When we got a new kid, it was usually from a military family. (The Coast Guard & Fort Belvior are a rocks throw from the school) We never had any local kids from other schools transfer in. We had a kid on the team who transferred in from Indiana, one from Mississippi & one from Florida. Now, the QB did transfer in from Lake Braddock i hear & the coach now also came from Braddock, so that’s a little shady. But when I was there, we had zero dirty transfers.

LOL. I know a kid who lived in the Edison boundary the entire two years he played for Hayfield after transferring. Wasn't that long ago.
