Kids that age are very embarrassed about sex. If her allegation is true (and I have seen no valid reason her to make me doubt her) then I expect she was probably ashamed and not sure how to express it, even to her parents. I have never been assaulted but I have been in situations like this and sometimes it's hard to get the truth out once there's been a gap. She probably didn't go home immediately (12 year olds can't drive) and if she didn't call or talk to her parents immediately after the incident, she probably lost her nerve, started doubting her experience, and started feeling ashamed and maybe like she brought it on herself by "tempting" him or something.
Society tells women to feel responsible when they're assaulted - "asking for it" bullshit, so I expect she was internalizing that and was afraid. plus she's TWELVE who the hell acts logically at that age

^^^^ THIS ^^^^ was the beginning of all of Mr. Lannigan's troubles. The incident in Virginia beach nearly got him fired. That Virginia beach incident was the skeleton in his closet that caused the police and the schools to believe the Center ridge girl in the first place.
