were originally invented by "AI" research -- trying to make "thinking" machines.
None of it what we have today represents "intelligence" to speak of,
but rather extremely limited programs that can each do one amazing thing
that previously only humans could do. Some of the programs do it better than us.
But I assure you that (a) they are not "thinking" and (b) there is no known path
to getting the existing programs to generalize or combine or evolve or do anything
that could actually "think". Any time you see something that looks like it is
"thinking", that is an illusion and a misunderstanding of what is going on.
There is plenty to fear in terms of job loss!
There is plenty to fear from privacy invasion that may use these technologies.
There is plenty to fear from lethally arming these non-thinking primitive things.
However, there is nothing to fear about robots becoming sentient,
or about the new race of hyper-intelligent artificial creatures replacing us.
Come back in 100 years, real progress may be possible by then.
I've been active in the AI field for 40 years at major universities.
