Fairfax County Public Schools Statement

"FCPS takes seriously any and all allegations of sexual harassment, bullying or other allegations of inappropriate behavior reported by staff or students. Nearly 20 individuals were interviewed as part of the FCPS investigative process into the allegations raised at Lake Braddock Secondary School. The Lake Braddock coach was removed from FCPS nearly two years ago (early 2016), and has not been employed by FCPS in any capacity since then. We cannot provide further details due to legal confidentiality of personnel and student matters.

Mr. Giannelli was not a licensed-teacher; he was employed as a part-time coach only and resigned his coaching position at Lake Braddock in early 2016 and is no longer employed by FCPS. Mr. Clark retired from FCPS at the end of 2016.

FCPS' primary responsibility is the safety and well-being of all FCPS students. By law, FCPS cannot comment on specific personnel cases (unless the individual employees agree to publicly disclose information contained in their personnel files).

FCPS vigorously pursues and investigates any and all allegations of sexual harassment or other allegations of inappropriate behavior reported by staff or students. If any negligence in reporting such incidents is discovered, appropriate disciplinary actions are undertaken. If any disciplinary steps are taken against employees, the action taken is confidential under Virginia law (unless the individual employees agree to publicly disclose that information).

For those reporting any allegations, FCPS does have a “whistle blower” policy that protects employees from retribution for reporting alleged wrongdoing. There is no evidence of any retaliatory measures taken against any of the employees involved in the Lake Braddock Secondary School investigation.

The Department of Education stressed that the opening of the investigation is not an implication of any wrongdoing by FCPS and FCPS welcomes the review."

To all who are still making this a Bill Park issue, go fuck yourself. This isn’t about you. This is about underage girls who were subjected to verbal abuse for many years. This is about how unqualified personnel of Lake Braddock and FCPS failed to do anything to protect these underage girls. Again, it’s not about you. Go find something else to do, rather than sit behind a computer screen and pretend you know anything about this matter, when it’s clear you don’t.

I just watched a new WUSA channel 9 news report tonight about the ongoing saga at LBSS. It would appear that the principal at LBSS has been less then truthful or has had a memory loss with communications on these issues.

Another parent has stated that she complained to the principal and DSA a year prior to the current investigation about the same sort of allegations. Nothing was done, so this was allowed to continue for another 1-2 years.

This is why FCPS can not investigate themselves, to many things get swept under the rug. A news team looks into this investigation and all of a sudden more complaints are uncovered. DOE will certainly have their hands full.

I really don't know what happened, but generally in these types of situations, the person in charge i.e. the principal in this case, is asked to resign/be reassigned or is fired.

There could be other possible litigation issues that may stem from all of this as well.

Betsy Gallier - the new "witness" went to Accotink academy - a theraputic day school and took just enough classes at LB to be eligible to play basketball as per VHSL. accotinktheraputicday.com. It's a special-needs therapeutic setting serving children with emotional disabilities, developmental disabilities and specific learning disabilities.

I'm sure Park could get her to say just about anything he wanted her to. And Peggy Fox put the words in her mouth. I'm not denying Gianelli was an ass, but come on let's have credible witnesses and deal with the truth. Don't put words in a diabled girls mouth and claim it's more evidence.

Dear Lake Braddock Secondary School Community,

After serving 25 years in FCPS at Lake Braddock Secondary School, with ten of those years serving as the principal, I have decided to retire.

I have spent much of my life connected to Lake Braddock and would not trade the years as a student, teacher, and administrator for anything.

I have been so fortunate to work with wonderful, dedicated colleagues who have inspired me with their passion for educating and mentoring the thousands of students that have come through Lake Braddock during my tenure. I will miss the amazing energy and professionalism that you bring to this school every day.

Finally, it is the impact of the outstanding students at Lake Braddock that I will remember most. Students, you are the heart and soul of why we do what we do every day and I will truly miss you and your families.

Thank you all for an amazing experience and I know that Lake Braddock will continue to set the bar for excellence in FCPS, Virginia and beyond.

Sincerely,

David F. Thomas
Principal
Lake Braddock Secondary School

---------------------

Dear Lake Braddock Secondary School (LBSS) Community:

As Dave Thomas shared this afternoon, he is retiring from LBSS after serving the school system for 25 years. We want to thank him for his dedicated service to LBSS and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).

Please know that the Region 4 Office is committed to keeping a strong administrative team in place to ensure academic success for all of our students. Effective Monday, Dr. John Banbury will be joining the team as interim principal and will remain in this capacity in the coming months.

Dr. Banbury became the executive principal for the Region 1 office in April 2017, after serving as the principal of Oakton High School for thirteen years. In 1993, Banbury began his career in education as a social studies teacher at West Potomac High School. After serving as an assistant principal at W.T. Woodson High School and Frost Middle School, he became the principal of Oakton High School in 2004. Committed to preparing all students for postsecondary success in a rapidly changing world, Dr. Banbury established a culture of innovation through the work of professional learning communities and fostered progressive practices including student exhibitions, presentations of learning, and project-based learning. His work has led the division in establishing best practices for the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate.

Dr. Banbury earned his master’s degree in social studies education in 1993 and his doctorate in curriculum and instruction in 1998, both from The George Washington University (GWU). He teaches courses in education leadership and teacher preparation as an adjunct professor at GWU and George Mason University. He has served in advisory roles for GWU, the Virginia Department of Education, and the Virginia House Committee on Education.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Banbury to Lake Braddock. My office will work closely with Dr. Banbury and the community to ensure a successful second half of the school year and continued excellence at LBSS.

Sincerely,

Angela Atwater
Assistant Superintendent, Region 4
Fairfax County Public Schools

Parents rule that building and that’s not the way to run a school! Teachers are leaving now. Kids will suffer. At least it’s calm for now? Dave went down because the people under him failed. They were handled but Park and his merry band of fussy people couldn’t be content with the guilty being charged. Park was after Dave’s head. I hope he’s happy. No one else is. Quick, get your kids out before acadenics implode over there.

Oh give it a rest about Park. He did what he thought was right and he had a lot of support from the parents.

Dave Thomas went after Clark and Poythress and threw them under the bus to cover his own butt. He got what he deserved, the same fate that he gave to them.

If the teachers want to leave, let them go. LB will attract the better up and coming teachers that were not part of Dave's clique and will be better off.

Changes are much needed at LB, most think they should clean house, all Asst Principals, Administrators, DSA, all should be replaced.

The new interim principal is there to evaluate the changes that need to occur and FCPS will put that plan in motion when the new school year starts in August.

Not sure why anybody would want to teach in FCPs with its entitled parents and kids with no respect for authority. Pretty soon, they'll have to pull prisoners and offer to take time off their sentences if they promise to teach. Once they started teaching though, they'd be happy to serve out their full sentence.

Just remember that retaliation is making it personal.

The first thing you should know is that retaliation of this sort is illegal. FCPS employees have a right to voice complaints without being fired or otherwise punished. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is a place that you can file a complaint if you choose. I know a growing number of FCPS employees are afraid to bring illegal actions to light if they thought they were just going to be fired, so they must be given the freedom to file complaints without fear -- regardless of the end result of those cases. But.... that being said, retaliation complaints is still very common with FCPS Human Resource Office. As such, it's wise to spend less time worrying about retaliation and more time considering your legal options and your rights as a worker.

A responsible school board member is Elizabeth Schultz from the Springfield District. Share your concerns with her via email and cc the email to the Regional Assistant Superintendent Dr. Atwater.

So I am confused about one thing...

A - I keep seeing that "Coach P", who I am assuming is Poythress from the string here, was fired because he covered up a student alcohol violation and called kids (or talked with kids) inappropriate things.

B - I also see that he was fired for "being a mole" and people think he should be protected by the whistle blower law.

The two things are totally separate. So if he did "A", the protections afforded to "B" do not exist. I don't know the facts but would ask anyone on here who does this question....

Did he, in fact, cover up a LBSS student's alcohol use from the administration? If so, then his contract would stipulate his being fired and there may be a consequence to his teaching license. Protections that fall under "B" would not exist and it would seem that fans of his coaching are using that (meaning B) to distract from the real issue in "A"

This is separate from Mr. Thomas and whether he should or should not have been let go (whether now or in the recent past). I see there are many opinions on both sides.. but I can't follow the whole "Coach P" thing.

I agreed with FCPS and Dr. Banbury to accept a transfer to another school as an overstaff ADSA for the remainder of the year.

I have enjoyed the last 15 months working with all of you. I am proud of the strides that we have made during that time to improve the HPE Dept. and our Activities/Athletics for our students. We have made some significant improvements to our facilities and culture for our student-athletes; Student-Athlete of the Month board; new gym floor, new lower bowl practice turf, new bleachers going to be installed in the gymnasium this summer and new LED lights to be installed over the main court of the gymnasium. We all worked together to change the culture & climate of our teams to better represent the Lake Braddock school & community Each and every one of you makes a significant impact on the lives of students here at LBSS. I know that all of you will continue to do the same for kids.

I am going to enjoy ..............BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH...........
Enjoy the Spring Break…you all deserve it! I'm going to iHop!!!!

That's not true.....most all of the coaches at LB were approved by Dave, including the football coach. Maybe he is next to go, he certainly wasn't the most qualified candidate. He was hand picked by Kerns and approved by Dave. If the coach stays, he should be required to have his assistant coaches lose weight, first off its unhealthy and second, is that what you want representing your school?

I think most are happy the way the new interim Principal is evaluating all the admin staff, teachers and coaches. This is the way things should be done, get rid of the dead weight and then you get rid of the turmoil.

FCPS has finally got it right

"happy the way the new interim Principal is evaluating all the admin staff, teachers and coaches"????? - Many are not happy. Especially the teachers. Turmoil is crushing morale and the atmosphere is akin to a witch hunt. Perhaps it would have been better to reassign the entire faculty, dispersing them throughout the county and hiring replacements from out of county, out of state or out of country. How can kids concentrate on academics when many of their teachers are miserable.

Sure some teachers are still crying that Dave is gone but most teachers are ecstatic that administrators are FINALLY being held accountable for their LACK of leadership and the shitty job they do at school. We are happy that teachers and departments are finally being called out for not doing their jobs. Most of us are welcoming this change because the culture (and the students know this) at LB is at a tipping point. Banbury isn’t here to make friends, he’s here to shape things up and he has. Good riddance. Anyone’s who gotten kicked out of LB has deserved it thus far. Karl did not do his job and was a shitty DSA. Dave was too scared to tell people to do their jobs and had too many connections with too many people to be a good leader. We’re ready for next school year and all the change it’ll bring.

Oh there will be more replacements/reassignments for sure.

Too many admins and teachers were allowed to coast under Dave Thomas and those will be weeded out. Dr Branbury is doing exactly what has needed to be done to get this school in order.

Thomas created a clique like environment and if you were not part of that, you were considered an outsider. Now the tables have turned, the Thomas supporters are on the outside.....How does that make you feel?

I too am looking forward to the much needed changes and am ready for what the next school year will bring.

Thank you Dr Branbury!!!!

We all bail because we aren’t respected anymore. We love our kids and our job. This isn’t how to lead inside a school. The morale is gone. Come fall, I hope Branbury has enough teachers to open! We hate working like this. We have done great work. Like Dave or not, respect is necessary or we all bail and then what will FCPS do?

Oh please, you have teachers waiting to come to Lake Braddock. Putting good teacher in Lake Braddock will not be an issue. Its one of the top schools in the state.

I think respect is given to those who earn it, not just because you are friends with the principal.

Thomas is the one who started all this mess with his attitude of I will do as I want and those who test me, will be gone. Well, Mr. Thomas, got the same fate he dealt the others. Don't be mad at Branbury, he is the one trying to clean it up.

Why don't you being a part of the solution and not part of the problem, maybe that will help morale.

What did Kerns do in the 15 months he was there?

1. Alienated the boosters with his own agenda
2. Angered the parents with little or no communication
3. Planned in school activities with no prior approval from his bosses
4. Hired a football coach with a losing record, when other candidates were much more qualified. Tried to sell the idea to everyone this is the "best coaching staff in the state"

The list could go on and on.

This guy was a disaster from the start and never should have been hired. He had a terrible reputation at Annandale and the LB administration was told that. However, Dave Thomas hired him anyway just to be his "Yes Man" and when Thomas was shown the door, no one had any use for him.

The interim principal is not there to make friends. He is there to evaluate and replace, if necessary, admins, staff and coaches who are there just collecting a pay check.

The Thomas party is over at LB its time for a change and if that means cleaning house, then let the house cleaning continue.

First time posting. Excuse me but you are wrong. Boosters do what they want. Communication with parents? Isn’t your kid in high school? What do you want? Ask your kid. We have a new gym floor, the lower field being redone, new seats in the gym, new weight board. He was doing his thing. Run off by pissy parents? Do they run this school? And about the coach, are you serious? He doesn’t have that power as DSA. That coach has turned around a bunch of loser thugs into a “family” of leaders and athletes. My kid’s friends are getting offers from Schools, better grades, higher test scores, management in the gym, and real encouragement. These kids will tell you they were mad last year and wouldn’t follow the structure and program in place until they saw Coach Doc was the way to victory. After the third game, they gave in and started to work together. He and his staff are the best thing over there. My kid would be nobody without Coach Doc and his staff. You better watch your mouth saying shit like that now. You can take down Dave, I guess. Taking down Kerns was nasty and wrong. You mess with Doc and you’ll have trouble on your hands. For sure.

I second that comment. My boy needs Coach Doc and what he’s brought to that pathetic program. It has turned a corner and it’s clear. Best coaching staff? Yes. Measured by more than wins. Check those grades and the respect. Ask a teacher about the ass athletes that used to go to Lake Braddock. No more of that. He has their ear and he has bonded them now. Messing with Doc would cause big big problems.

The both of you WinnerHSfamily & BigMan are delusional. The only thing that is a BIG BIG problem for Coach Doc is when iHop runs out of pancakes or when Mcdonalds runs out of fries. Give it a rest on THE BEST Coaching staff. Not THE BEST DRESSED. Not the BEST physically. NOT THE BEST in LB's 50 year history, wouldn't be in the Top 5 of any Coach that has led the BRUINS.

Those loser thugs you talk about, are now doctors lawyers, business men and dentists, as well as respected members of the community. Some have started families and are very well adjusted. Ask any of them and they will tell you, LB football and coach P taught them life lessons on and off the field. They made friendships and contacts that will last a lifetime. He may of fracture a rule from time to time, but it was always with the best interest of the student athlete in mind. He had those players back and they had his.

They built the program and made it great and one of the most respected in the state, along with coach Poythress. I am sick and tired of the doc bashers saying anything different. If doc has to discipline another teachers student just because he is a football player, then doc is stepping over the line. It should be that teachers responsibility for that. Maybe those teachers need to be re-evaluated.

Anyone that wanted to play at the next level coach P made sure that happened.

If your kid would be no where with out doc and staff, maybe you should evaluate your parenting skills.

You can always say its not about the wins, but look at all the complaints there were when LB started 0-3. The boosters want to win and so does the community.

Hey how about this, maybe the next DSA will require the Braddock coaches to participate in off season conditioning to get into shape. They really are the fattest staff in the state.

I think Poythress’s players growing up to be lawyers or dentists has more to do with the fact that they’re privileged kids from Burke than who their football coach qas

He said they were all taught life lessons through football from coach Poythress. They had his back and he had there back. That is loyalty and trust my friend.

Not everyone that grows up in Burke is a privileged kid

So Dude let it go, P got his money and is retired.

Dave needs to work to make 30 years for retirement. Chace Ramey and Kevin Sills were pushed out. It was either split or be fired like Dave. Kerns demoted to WTW now cannot afford gastric bypass. Coach got all his 30 and a new house. Mess with bull you get the horns is what he always said

I am sure Dave regrets going after P now, at the time Dave thought he was untouchable.

Had he talked to P man to man, I bet they could have worked this out.

Look at LB now, some clown running the football program and 3 or 4 Principals and they are still having problems.

LB would have been better off had they worked it out.

It’s Gatehouse continuing to send temporary and interim fixes to the problems and it keeps that school in turmoil.

Dave Thomas is still on the payroll. Coach P got a nice settlement. That Brabrand guy should have been fired along with his girlfriend. Dan Meier was sent for a year and look what they let happen to him. Someone didn’t like being held accountable. (She’s been seen sucking up already.) HR has no professional degree in HR so her knee jerk reaction to the BS caused more upheaval. She’s one of the superintendent’s puppets doing as she’s been told? Interim people at Gatehouse do that too. Anyone know what happened to Dan Meier and the work he was doing as asked? Ask around at Gatehouse and they will spill it. Huge mistake.

Next was Penny Gros from another region. The community started to grow weary. Ask her about her time there? It was awful for a long time and then she was making her way only to be moved and replaced by the results of a fake national search. Now there is yet someone else as principal at Lake Braddock? No one cares now.

We have cycled through principals great and terrible. Still, we wait for Gatehouse to fix all the hurt, damage, and screwups from the past.

They’re just too clueless to see the mistakes they continue to make. The solution is right in front of their faces and has always been there. They just refuse to listen or the ears are interim and leave.

It is a challenge to take over a large school when it has been rudderless for such a long time. The guy has been successful elsewhere, but FCPS is a unique beast. I doubt he will be happy or many of the teachers happy for some time. My guess is that he will kowtow to the parents which is a big mistake. Many of them are toxic. Kids are good, most teachers are great, LBSS will survive, but it will be rough. It would be better if tow or three of the admin team could be replaced as well as some department chairs. The interims with the exception of Meier wreaked havoc regarding stability and loyalty. A cloud of suspicion and paranoia is hard to eliminate.FCPS should take this as a lesson learned when they begin their search for Robinson's replacement.

Bill—let it go. OCR still hasn’t touched this. They aren’t going to. Focus on your failed life and stop humiliating your family.
As for people getting pushed out— FCPS staff left for saner places. Poythress blackmailed and lied his way to a settlement by manipulating the crazies on the school board.
Move on you pathetic shell of a man.

Sounds like the new FCPS Superintendent will be retiring in a few days.

All this because Dave wasn't man enough to fess up to what he knew. He thought he could throw a few under the bus and all would be good. I think anyone administrators at LB who was there with Dave should be fired. Anyone brought in by Dave...fired!!

Brabrand has always been a liar. He is old friends with Dave so he took care of him.The SB is old housewives, a waitress, and a few guys who were all bullied. They won't do a thing! Meanwhile, your tax money keeps them far.
