Bourne's drive in used to have the best bean soup but they closed up in 1992. Where is the good bean soup at now? I know Yorkshire restaurant has good bean soup but that is in Manasscrack!

When I was a kid, my Mom made navy bean soup with smoked neck. The closest thing I ever found was cans of US Senate Bean Soup.

The Famous Senate Restaurant Bean Soup

INGREDIENTS:
2  lbs of small michigan navy beans
1.5 lbs smoked ham hocks
1 onion
unsalted butter
salt
pepper

DIRECTIONS
Take two pounds of small Michigan navy beans, wash and run through hot water until beans are white again.
Put on the fire with four quarts of hot water.
Then add smoked ham hocks, boil slowly approximately 3 hours in covered pot.
Braise one chopped onion in a little butter, and when light brown put it into the soup.
Season with salt and pepper then serve.
Do not add salt until ready to serve.

READY IN 3 hrs 50 mins
SERVES 8

Poster's Note: I don't have 3.5 hours to cook & I'll never serve 8.

Same recipe but use the bone with some meat still on it from a Honey Baked Ham. You will thank me later.

Mom's Organic is good-- you can get it spicy. Not sure about "the best" but best I've had in recent history.

They don't make it every day but the heart healthy cafe at Fairfax hospital makes a great bean soup.
