Actually no, he did not find out. Instead I approached him about opening our relationship and cut out the affairing. I didn't want him to hurt because my reasons for going on AM were not about anything I was lacking from him or our relationship. He wanted the same thing too, but didn't know how to achieve it. AM was just the vehicle for me realizing that I wanted an open marriage. We've successfully done that and are both tremendously happy now.

If he found out now, I think he would understand a lot better than if he would have found out before I approached him. I honestly would have approached him sooner, but I had to do some soul searching about what I wanted and needed. I risked a lot of pain and heartbreak by acting the way I did. I am grateful that it didn't blow up in my face because it would have devastated him.

We humans do the best we can in life. No one wants to be an asshole (except a particular breed of human). We reach out into the world searching for things we need. Sometimes we do it without realizing that we need anything at all. Behavior and impulses drive us. Even for the most self-aware, sometimes it takes awhile to wake up and realize what you are doing.

I appreciate the thoughtful response. Personally, I think that in time society will recognize that monogamy is an orientation, not a reflection of character. Many people today simply don't have the option of living openly and honestly--there is just too much judgement, as this thread amply demonstrates. Congratulations on finding a way to relationship with your husband that works for both of you.

Yes! I love that you understand this. Monogamy is thought to be an orientation by many people in the open lifestyle.

I met a man who always cheated on his girlfriends. He met a woman who always cheated on her boyfriends. They came clean to each other and realized that they were non-monogamous and now are married with an ethical non-monogamous relationship and doing very well.

In the lifestyle, I've met many married couples who are open and happy. They have some of the most fulfilling sex lives as compared to some of their long time married friends. It's so common to be unhappily married but it doesn't have to be. I'm not saying that open relationships are the fix because they aren't always. They require a high degree of emotional awareness, superb communication skills, and a stable relationship.

Now you know your dad is human. It's between your dad and your mom. Let it go, and tell your friend who see it and mention it that your dad's friend gave him the subscription as a gag gift when he turned 40 (or 45, 50, whatever).

Unfortunately, I got married before I really understood that there were other alternatives. And really, I'm not sure there were many before the internet age. I can't even imagine trying to 'open up' a traditional marriage.

There needs to be rules and laws that prevent any illegally obtained data from disseminating wildly with no accountability. Free speech should also have exclusions for cases like these and data obtained in this mechanism should be a protected category. However, if the dude was a contractor using government equipment and/or on government time, you are correct that he gave them a good-enough reason to fire him. I'm not working on the government's dime with a security clearance. When I was, I wasn't dumb enough to do something that stupid and especially not using time or resources on the job that could be traced back to me. Which is the only reason anyone would be fired.

I could care less about the morality of it. It's a practical demonstration that you're too much of an idiot to be trusted with a clearance.

Unfortunately, I found my husband on A.M. 3 years ago. I signed up to catch him. At the time, it was the right decision for me to do so. I have no regrets that my name might appear on this list, and I have TAKEN HIM TO THE CLEANERS!!!!! I Have a clear conscience! I can sleep at night! My ex-wife did something similar, except, it wasn't me on the site and she was messaging with some random dude that lived in the same town as us (he didn't have a picture). Talk about scary - and trust issues. So glad we divorced. This was back in 2005/2006 timeframe. I never heard of the site before then and so I created a basic profile (non-paid) in order to login and check it out and find this guy's profile to see who she was talking to. The site was obviously a bunch of fake women. I don't know how in the world she ever thought the site was legitimate or that I was on it.

But guess what? Now my name is on the list. From a basic account created almost 10 years ago that wasn't used. I should have used a fake name, but didn't think anything of it since I thought that information was hidden anyway. My current wife is well aware my name is on the list and she's fine with it, but that won't stop other people who don't know (or care) from harassing me.

I'm sure most of men who signed up were either married and looking for side-action, or single men thinking that a married woman would be fun. But everyone is so excited to burn these people down that they don't give a shit about collateral damage.

I saw the name I didn't want to see on the list...but I am glad I saw it.
It will cost our marriage but I can't live with a cheater.

I have read in every article, explanation, disclaimer, etc. that the list is made of PAID credit card transactions ONLY.

You say you created a "basic" "non-paid" account but are still on the list. That goes against everything I've read from reputable sources.

All, some of these folks appear on the list because they created a "fake" account and then paid to delete it. So picture yourself like the above poster doing that because his wife at the time was cheating and the intelligently paying to delete it. Guess who you're accusing of being a cheater? Him and according to Ms Snowden this list with home addresses proves you deserve the public outage.

I don't know who owns this site or what the exact purpose of keeping this up for 10 days is, but I can assure you they have ruined the reputations of respectable people who for any number of reasons would of joined.

I am a little confused about this hack. I checked out the site at some point around 2004 or 2005? I saw the site was a scam and i deleted or dissabled my account. Never been back, never recived one email from AM to renew my account. Now my email shows up on have i been powned despite the fact that this hack was supossed to be from members from 2008 and on. None of my info showed up on the list of hacked accounts but my email is still showing as a hit?

The Russians must have really wanted an Ashley Madison account and they must have known the info would be released a full year later.... I also look at the casual encounter postings on craigslist, why?, because I think they are pretty funny. Despite what all of the torch and pitchfork puritans out there want to believe, some people actually looked at AM out of curiosity about the people on it, not because they wanted to cheat. Not sure why that is such a hard concept for people to wrap their minds around. I have searched the list against my email that was flagged and any other info I might have used back then, nothing shows up. I know what my intentions were when i was looking at the site so I have no shame about it. Sorry for all of you who are to narrow minded to understand the concept of curiosity on the internet.

I created an account many years ago when I was single and didn't pay for anything. The email address I used shows up on the list. So, I know for a fact, this does show accounts that never paid into the website.

Now, I did find a database where you can search more extensively and apparently you can be a single male looking for a single female, or the reverse. With that said, it' apparently not only for cheaters, right?

I also have a friend who had a class assignment in pscyhology (the entire class had this actually) and it was to do a case study paper on AM. So, she created an account to check it out and be able to author a paper about how it works. Now, she's dealing with all of the judgement of having an account even though she SHOWS people the AM Research Assignment paper from college dated 2009.

Let's just agree to disagree on the "I never paid" line unless you are female.

AM stated that these were paid CC entries. AM needed an address to verify CC's against so unless you used a GC you couldn't get by with a bogus adress.

It was the credit card transactions that went back to 2008. Information on user profiles go back to the start of the site as there are profile IDs in the single and double digits.

Couldn't agree more on the justification crap. Just own your actions. The more you spin stories in an attemtp to point your spouse to this site and say "seeeeee, so many of us didn't do ANYTHING but ended up on the list anyway" the less time you have to actually put toward repairing the damage YOU did.

Put your effort into showing you are truly sorry and your relationship may just make it through this. How often did you look at the site, how much time did you spend there? Double that and put it toward making your relationship at home work.

I used the site once, before quickly realizing it was a scam and the women on there were not real. And my partner was well aware of it, before I even created the account, as we have an open-relationship which my profile on the site was very clear about. She was the one who pointed out that my name showed up on this list as she is concerned about our privacy. Obviously it isn't a problem that she found my name given that she already knows and approves. But do you know who doesn't have any business knowing about our private sex lives? My friends, family, neighbors and co-workers that I don't share details about my private sex life with. Sure, the information is "out there" if one goes looking hard enough, but dumping it here in plain text for Google to index is not okay. I've already had friends and family contacting me about this, but I'm concerned more about the ones that see my name on the list and don't say anything. Judging from the comments on this site, many of them probably assume the worst. And now its not just me that needs to explain the details of my relationship to people who have no business knowing, but my partner has to explain as well, since people are contacting her about this.

Even if only one half of one percent of users on the site are in a situation like mine, it doesn't justify violating everyone's privacy to get at the "scumbag cheaters." I never understood the reality television / Jerry Springer appeal to satisfy bloodlust, or whatever this is, but I'm starting to think the Romans had it right. First, I did not say i went on Ashley Madison, so like the rest of the lynch mob on here, thank you for presuming guilty without any evidence. I am a guy who suffered a lot of emotional abuse as a child and ended up marrying a woman who made me feel like crap. I reached a point where I wanted to take my life and also considered looking for a fling, not because i thought i was some cool guy, but because I just wanted to feel like someone wanted me. Well, i did not go through with it and I got a lot of therapy and worked my way through a lot of stuff. My life is not perfect and my marriage is a struggle. I am not saying what anyone on this list did was good or right, I am saying that the world is not as black and white as everyone wants to paint it and I believe there were a few guys and maybe 2 or 3 women who dealt with the same issues and daemons. People’s lives are going to be destroyed and relationships that could have been repaired in private are now out there for the world to shun. And everyone here is just dancing around the fire. Karma works in a lot of ways. The people on AM are getting Karma for what they did. I pray to God that all the people that are rejoicing in the downfall of others also get a taste of karma. This was a good lesson for everyone and hopefully will make the world think about cheating and what it means to be married. But it also is the destruction of families and lives. If you are not able to see that then I am as ashamed of you as anyone on the list.

I checked out AdultFriendFinder and several other sex-oriented dating sites and they were all the same. But what I appreciated about AM and other similar sites is that, as counter-intuitive as it may seem, it was a place to be honest. So many people in open relationships go on dating sites and know that such designations draw scrutiny, so they lie and say they are single. Many cheaters do the same. Do you think all of the "single" guys on Tinder and OkCupid are actually single? At least with AM, you can be clear that you are in a relationship and seek other people who are also in relationships. Whether or not the people on the site are honest with their partners is up to them. I made it clear about who I was, my relationship status, and what I was looking for - which was a similarly minded person.

So I see 30 million men who participated in a fantasy of having extra-marital relations, without actually cheating. Judge that for what it is.

SO far, he's only done it once, last Thursday night. He apparently doesn't give a fuck that he's trafficking in stolen information and permitting posting the home addresses of people who may or may not have violated some Victorian social code, opening families up to online and real-life harassment.

All impacted DoD folks used fed equipment or .government accounts to access the site. This is cause for termination (or access revoke) for any improper use. Not just scams like AM.

Just use TOR, use the search engine (not evil) and you can get full instructions on how to download it.

Except, most people are too lazy to do that. They prefer it to be in a nice, easily accessible area, like right here. So they can send their friends links and say "here it is!" I have yet to see *any other* site show an actual list, short of ones that have (for some unknown reason! /sarcasm) been taken down already. The ones left are sites where you ahve to search by a specific name or email, which doesn't lend itself to the voyeuristic approach this site has. There's a reason actual LISTS are so hard to find- most other hosts are afraid of *lawsuits.* Everyone pretty much understands that posting an actual list, without making someone search for an *individual* instead, is a serious legal no-no.

At this point, since Cary isn't removing the names as requested, he's just coming accross as an asshole just waiting to be sued- maybe because he's bored or something, who knows.

But my ex-wife WAS using the service, that's how I found out about the website to begin with. She claimed she was on it looking to see if I was on it, even though I wasn't. It wasn't even about trust, she was just a terrible person all around. But my friends and family know that, as does her family, so yeah, it's a good excuse because there is truth in it. But I get it, everyone wants to judge everyone else's sex life, and the people most angry are probably not satisfied with their own sex lives. This is the fucked up world we live in. Some people are only happy if they can make other people share in their misery - just like my ex-wife.

As the promise to remove information upon request appears to be false, I will be contacting the law firms representing Avid Life Media to alert them to this site and the failure of its moderators to take appropriate action to protect affected individuals from further harm. I expect they will take whatever action they can to have this thread taken down, as they have other sites that were available in the immediate aftermath of the hack but now are less intrusive.
