Does anyone know how to do a trace on a license plate? I saw a few companies that charge about $40 to pull Motor Vehicle Records, but VA was one of several states that they wouldn't offer to do this for...thanks for any suggestions-

I heard VA stopped offering this service as people were using it for stalking and harassment.

yeah, you're just going to have to stalk people some other way.

Maybe the person wants to know because they saw someone driving drunk or victim of a hit and run. Gathering info before or in lieu of going to the police can be effective at times. I have had luck pulling info off of the VIN number...I think you can get the info you are looking for by going around this way. Good luck.

No but someone in my family is a semi-functional retarded woman and a suggestion that private citizens should research who the owner of a plate is before simply reporting the plate to the police and let THEM do the job sounds like something she would say.

Or.......if you get the tag # or VIN #, the police can run that and get the info since you know they sorta have access to DMV files.

I agree-sometimes the police aren't,sorta you know, always helpful, especially to us black males. I am so glad the police have always been so helpful to you.

Get the Vehicle Identification Number, take it to a private investigator and you might have some luck in a few states.

DMV records are private.
