It was closed down earlier this week, a couple days after zoning was notified.
The encampment was located in the wooded area of Sunset Hills, between Target and the Town Center Road.
During the past few years, there have been similar encampments in Reston/Herndon. Prior to the recession, there was an encampment near South Lakes HS and some people took up residency in the Kohls Parking Garage on Elden Street. Both were closed after numerous complaints.
There's one tent on Shirley Gate Road just off Braddock, kind of hard to see unless you know right where to look. Not a city yet, but---

Does a single tent count? Someone's been living in a tent in the woods between Alder Woods and Fairfax Co parkway since at least 2007. Well-hidden tent and camp-site with a barbecue. You can see it from the parkway in the winter. It's just across the street from the Fair Oaks hospital entrance on Alder Woods. I jog and walk dogs in that area. Campsite is always well maintained but I've never seen anyone coming or going.

I pitched a tent in my pants when I saw Spunky at the Vienna Inn last night.

There was a tent where you get onto 66 from route 50 -- always went past it on my way to school. But that tent appears to have moved on too

There is one in Annandale behind the Anne N' Dales on Columbia Pike. Like 7-8 tents visible from the professional park behind it. Always see shady people riding bikes with a bunch of their shit tied up with tarps on the back.
Shaddy Asian owners are probably making $$$ off of rent.

I've often thought about living this way (yes, I have mental-health issues, but have managed to just barely keep it together).
This may be a really ignorant question, but how and where do tent-city residents tend to personal hygiene?
Brushing teeth? Bathing? #2?

^^^ you shit and piss where you can, brush your teeth and rinse in public bathroom. It's fucking easy. apply for assistance, claim you have problems, better yet say you're an illegal spic, they will give you anything you need, even a cell phone. The world is yours.

I got an email from the county supervisor/chairman asking for volunteers to count the homeless.
What's the point of counting them? Don't we have a huge federal multi-billion-dollar census apparatus that's supposed to do that? Or does everything have to be done ten times over by fairfax county?

Hell --- you can make a six figure income in fairfax county and get help
$216,000 a year is so poor that the county will give you housing!
Government totally out of control wasting OUR money.

I would rather live in a tent by myself than go to a homeless shelter where you are locked in with the crazies at night, have to leave at 6am, etc etc....
Then again, I'd probably try living out of my car first or getting a cheap small RV to live out of first and just nomad it. Better than paying $1600 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment! The section 8 waiting lists are literally 3 years long, so no point in that either....
Just a matter of picking a good spot where the people of FFu won't rat you out like this whole thread is doing. Live and let live, as long as they aren't hurting anyone and keeping their area sanitary as possible....

Unless you have ever been there, judging people who are living peacefully, is pretty messed up. I have had the honor of speaking to the guy on Shirley Gate one night while on a late night bike ride. Nice dude. I worked soup kitchens and shelters and totally agree that I would hit the woods before going to a shelter. I don't care where they are from, they deserve the respect and dignity you would give anyone. Y'all need to with hold your judgement. You have no clue of the path in life that lead them to that place.

Of course they are not illegal immigrants living in the woods. Illegal immigrants get a nice townhouse in a nice part of town courtesy of the gubermint, an obamao phone, a job, and when no job yet, a pension thanks to Social Security and food stamps and welfare payments granted by the government to them.

Nice little tent community in the woods behind Fairfax High School. Food truck comes over on the regular to feed em.
