WASHINGTON — One person has been declared dead in a one-car accident that sent a car through the stone retaining wall on the George Washington Parkway in Arlington Saturday morning.

The northbound Parkway between Route 123 and Spout Run Parkway remained closed at 9 a.m. following the crash, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., according to U.S. Park Police.

The driver, who has not been identified, was traveling northbound near the scenic overlook when the car went through the wall and into the tree line along the Potomac River. The victim was dead at the scene.

I heard the dispatch for FFX Fire and Rescue about 3:30 am or so for this incident. FFX was enroute when they were called off because it was technically in Arlington's jurisdiction. Assume Arlington made it to the scene when FFX was called off.

Like anything,late night/early morning on the weekend, likely alcohol was involved.

Unfortunate ending to the situation, but just another reason to stay off the road late at night and do not drive under the influence.

Bad place to make a mistake.

Another drunk takes himself out. Just be thankful he didn't take any innocent victims with him.

To the deceased......you got what you deserved.

He may have fallen asleep. Although texting and intoxicated are very likely. Just imagine looking down for a second; Hit [send]. Look up; and your in the air heading for the Potomac. That would have to be a real quick plea. "Oh God, please gorgive me"

It was an older VW Passat, so it was a poor person aka a Democrat.
