It WILL be a difficult budget year for FCPS but don't buy into the school board's dooms day scenario. They should not be political but are probably more political than most NOVA politicians. In their mind their only job is to ask for larger transfers from the County, award consulting contracts and implement pet projects. They will cry, the Board of Supervisors will send them back to scour their proposal, they will get a smaller transfer than what they want but pass an amended budget anyway...

Seeing how Karen Garza thinks, she'd rather eliminate reading than scale back football. This is the Texas mentality. When the test scores crash, Fairfax County will be a redneck haven like Lubbock, where Garza came from.

The kids will go straight from the stadium to the trailer park as they won't get into college and can't get jobs.

But, people will have their high school football. Hurrah.

From 2011-2013, the Annandale Atoms notched only four wins, but the program
took a big step forward last season winning six of their first eight games
before dropping three of their final four including an opening round playoff
game to Battlefield.

A key to their resurgence was the explosiveness of their offense which put
up 322 points on the year, the second-best campaign that the Atoms posted
since the turn of the century. With eight starters returning including
quarterback Tucker Mack, center Dave Park and wide receivers Colin Corey and
Tim Johnson, the Atoms should be able to move the ball well again this
season. "Everyone is more comfortable in our system," says head coach Mike
Scott, "we will continue to push the pace and stretch the defense vertically
as well as spread them out."

One of the key players to watch is running back / H-back Beau Hatch, a
6-foot-1, 195-pound senior whose versatility will be key. He and Jalen
Jackson will be the primary ball carriers while Corey and Johnson work
outside the hashes. Things may be a bit slow early in the season as Scott
and company rebuild their offensive line, but Park, senior Greg Stratton and
sophomore Cesar Lopez are a nice foundation.

If the Atoms are going to take that next step forward, it will come with an
improved defense as they surrendered over 28 points per game last season
forcing them to win some shootout games including the 73-56 victory that
they notched over Woodson.

The back seven on the unit should be strong with junior Malik Moten moving
to the middle linebacker spot to hold things down in the middle of the
group. He'll be flanked by fellow juniors Brahim Bangura and Eduardo Rivera,
who may also spend some time at defensive end. The secondary is deep with
experience as Johnson, Corey and senior Cory Pringle all return as starters.
"We should be athletic and aggressive, " says Scott. "We need some guys to
step up on the defensive line but the back seven will be very athletic,
experienced and tough."

The schedule does them no favors with Centreville and Lake Braddock up as
their first two opponents, but a stretch in the middle of the schedule
includes a number of favorable games. The offense appears to be in great
shape so, if the defense can improve, particularly along the line of
scrimmage, the Atoms should find themselves in the postseason once again
though it looks like they will have another date with a high seed. They
might need to pull an upset or two in order to improve upon last year's 6-5
mark.

a) you cared enough to click on a thread about high school football knowing what the subject was about
b) you cared enough to make a stupid remark despite stopping to consider that anyone posting on this thread DOESN'T CARE what you think
c) someone just posted about two of the most important and influential persons of the 20th century that were jocks - guess you didn't notice that

That being said, no - Annandale will not continue rising and will be lucky to get 5 wins.

Somehow I think that in future history Eisenhower will be a short footnote. Reagan may get a paragraph for ending the Cold War (which looks like it might restart).

Tesla will get his own chapter: radio, alternating current, remote control, radio astronomy, etc. etc. etc.

Turing will get his own chapter: general purpose computer, stored program, defeating the Nazis.

Somehow football's contribution to history is kind of elusive if you ask me.

But I think this thread is about the teams in Fairfax, or is it a general purpose football debate area?

Both Reagan and Eisenhower would make any top ten Presidents list. This isn't anything that our current poor excuse for a president has to worry about.

Re: High School Football 2015
Posted by: WHAT'S THE PLAN AT WOODSON? ()
Date: July 23, 2015 08:10AM

From 2010-2014, the Woodson Cavaliers have failed to win more than three
games in a season notching a 12-38 record through those years. Prior to last
season, Mike Dougherty was brought in from Stonewall Jackson in hopes of
sparking new life a program who played in the regional championship game in
2007.

Looking at their 2-8 record last season, it doesn't appear that much changed
in Dougherty's first season. However, a deeper dive into the numbers shows
that there may be some signs for hope.

First, after not scoring more than 183 points in any of the prior four
seasons, the Cavaliers put up 250 last season, an improvement of ten points
per game from the 2014 campaign. In 2014, Woodson had two close losses
(games decided by seven or fewer points), but saw that number jump to three
last fall.

With four returning starters coming back including quarterback Jo Jo
Heisley, running back Chris Gardner, wide receiver Jack Caldwell and tight
end Torin Shanahan, Dougherty has a lot of experience to call upon on any
given Friday night. The coach also has expectations for sophomore tailback
Daequan Williams as a first-year varsity contributor.

That's not the end of his high hopes, either. "We are much better up front
as we had a great offseason in the weight room," says the coach. Entering
year two with their up-tempo attack, Dougherty believes that they can
continue their upward trend on offense. "We can and will score quickly and
often. Our goal is 80 offensive plays per game and 30-plus points. We will
put our opponents on their heels and limit their ability to substitute or
make adjustments due to our pace."

As many strides forward as the offense made last season, the defense went
the other way allowing over 40 points per contest. It's a situation that
Dougherty needs to turn around this season in order to take the program
forward. "This unit had a long season in 2014. We had troubles consistently
making plays. We will be young this season so many will need to step up
right away."

Despite their youth, the defense will see six starters returning. Shanahan
(LB), Caldwell (FS) and Gardner (DL) will play on both sides of the ball
being joined by senior Don Stedman (DL) and sophomore Kyle Hamrock (LB) on
defense.

"With a new defensive staff, we are looking forward to a turnaround for our
defense. We have lots of depth up front with several returnees in the
secondary."

The schedule is a bit stiff early with Chantilly and Robinson dotting the
docket in games one and two, but contests against Fairfax, Annandale and
West Potomac could give the Cavs a chance to get above .500. That's followed
by their two toughest tests of the season in South County and Lake Braddock
before they wrap up the regular season with Mount Vernon, West Springfield
and T.C. Williams.

Might not be the season that they take a giant leap forward, but Woodson
should win more games than they did last year.

I assume you are predicting that they will lose both of their first two games, which I think is a safe prediction. However, to "get above .500", they will need a sweep of those next three. I think they'll get some W's from those games, but I don't see them winning all three. My prediction: They will lose their first two, go 2-1 in the next three, lose the two games against SoCo and Lake Braddock, then go 2-1 down the stretch. That adds up to a 4-6 season. Progress, yes, but they aren't ready yet.

One thing that you forgot to mention is that they lost their leading receiver from last year's squad. Those are some big shoes to fill.

Brian Delaney is a Kicker (#5)
http://kohlskicking.com/recruiting/national-rating-system/kickers/2017

Brian currently has the strongest FG and KO leg in the country in his class.

Delaney was Westfield's kickoff and very long field goal attempt man last year. Had a stronger leg than Westfield's First Team All Met field goal/point after kicker, Conor Bouveron who was automatic to about the 35-40 yard line. Scanlon usually punted. Nearly all of Delaney's kickoffs were into/beyond the end zone.

Delaney and Bouveron would switch roles in garbage time.

I think Delaney also played LB or something like that on defense.

At the top of the over-rated list every year is South County. Will this be the year they finally knock off someone of significance in the playoffs? They seem to have a solid program and a really good coach but somehow they manage to screw things up every time they play a big game. I say yes - they are returning a lot from a very good team last year. I say they will win two playoff games this year.

The underdog this year is Madison. I look for a strong season with at least 6 maybe 7 wins. They will have an upset or two (Oakton, Hayfield perhaps).

As others have mentioned one of the most interesting dynamics of this season will be the start of a rivalry between the powerhouse 5A teams of Loudoun County vs. the 6A teams of Fairfax County. Briar Woods, Stone Bridge have brutal line-up of top 6A teams on their schedule this season. Tuscarora and Broad Run also playing some 6A. How those games turn out will be most fascinating. I think Briar Woods will bounce back from their 8-4 season.

The dark horse for the "surprise" best player would be Westfield RB Dominique Pearson. For whatever reasons he did not see the field much the last two years but if he is the starting RB for Westfield I would expect big numbers. This will be the 5th year in a row that Westfield has featured a different leading rusher:
2011 – Kendall Anderson (William & Mary)
2012 – Dalaun Richardson (Shenandoah U)
2013 – Tyler Thrasher-Walker (James Madison)
2014 – Evan Gray (New Hampshire)
From what little I’ve seen of Pearson he has the potential to be of these guys caliber. Just don't know if he will actually play or not. Anyone know?

This all makes sense. I think the term everyone was looking for is "Darkhorse", but I think Madison fits that description. They had a nice turnaround last season, and I understand they are returning a lot from last year's team. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Madison finished first in the new version of Conference 6, even ahead of Hayfield.

Conference 6 will be the hardest to predict of the four 6A northern region teams, with the new teams coming in. I look for the newcomers to finished in the order of Hayfield, Yorktown, and W-L. The five holdovers will likely finish in the order Madison, Langley, Fairfax, McLean, South Lakes.

I'm a little puzzled why people think Madison will be a dark horse contender in Conf 6. Last year they were 5-5 and only beat bad teams (Fx,SL,TJ,Mclean & Marshall) and lost to some mediocre ones (oakton, chantilly & langley). Hayfield didn't play a ton of great teams but their only loss to a mediocre team was Chantilly and they put up semi-respectable scores in losses to cville, soco and westfield. I still think Hayfield is the team to beat in Conf 6.

Notes from Centreville Coach Haddock:

SR Kyle Richbourg will be top RB
JR Jameel Siler will play QB
SR Riley Newell will anchor O-Line - expects OL will be one of Centreville's strengths this year
Defense will be led by 6'5", 230 Lb DL SR Christian Brooks (D1 recruit), SR LB Andre Horner, and JR DL Caleb Brooks.
No names but expects defensive backfield to be another strength this season
Expects team to be bolstered by 3 transfers:
RB/WR/KR Isaiah Culver (Langley), father now asst.coach at Centreville
TE Brett Clark (PVI)
Thomas ? (from Maryland)

I could see Madison getting to 6 wins this year IF they can beat Oakton in their opener, but I don’t see them as a threat to the top tier teams.

Love the Loudoun-Fairfax matchups this year, there will be tons of exciting football games each week.

A team on the rise is WT Woodson. Coming off a 2-8 season they are not a top of conference team by any stretch, but I think their fast tempo offense in year 2 will be a lot better. It sounds like from the media day the coach is very encouraged by the offseason and I like how he is incorporating Cross Fit into it. The opener against Chantilly will tell me a lot. My hesitation is they are scrimmaging Marshall and South Lakes; I’m a big proponent of scrimmaging better teams as Woodson will get little out of these matchups.

Yes the rumors of Centreville's immediate demise are way overdone. Of course they logically cannot be as good as the team from the last two years but do not sleep on them. I expect them to be at least in the 7-3, 8-2 or better zone and then battling hard come playoff time....GO CVILLE.

A few things to bank on for the upcoming season

1. Westfield will lose in the Northern Region game
2. SOCO still sux
3. Hendo at Hayfield will get a role as Fat Bastard in the next Austin Powers movie
4. Karen Garza will hold an FCPS stakeholder meeting on the fifty yard line of one of the artificial fields
5. The teams down south like Ocean Lakes and Oscar Smith will continue to cheat so it does not matter anyway (have you read the headlines about Ocean Lakes coach getting caught with recruiting violations?)....it just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter

I have not heard ANY rumors of Centreville's demise. On the contrary everyone I talk to expects them to be a top contender for 6A North.

Westfield Head Coach Kyle Simmons had a pretty matter-of-fact briefing. They have a lot coming back on defense. He seemed happy with their linebacker situation mentioning 5 veteran LB led by Navy commit Jack Clancy.

The big challenge will be on offense where they lost starting 4 OL, QB, WR, TE, RB. As always they will just be looking for younger guys to step up. Mentioned one of their better defensive lineman from last year - Chris Leo - will probably switch to OL. Expects Hank Johnson and Ivory Frimpong to be top WR. Confirmed Dominique Pearson will be at RB.

Seems QB is totally up for grabs - either senior Tyler Scanlon or junior Rehman Johnson. The weeks of August will decide. Spoke rather wistfully about how good Scanlon is at WR... said Brian Delaney will have both kicking and punting duties.

Indicated unlikely will have anyone playing both ways - at least not that much. Interestingly, said very impressed with freshman class - expects a number could start as sophomores. Otherwise, no big news or new players.

Westfield is a bunch of posers?

Hey moron, they whipped LB in the playoffs
40 or 41 to nothing when Westfield's 2nd and 3rd stringers went in late 3rd quarter.

Westfield has been one of the most successful programs in this area the past 14 years.

Do they have a ton of state titles, no, only two. But they seem to be in the mix almost every post season.

One if these years they might get back to the championship. They've got 7-8 returning starters on D this year. Defense wins championships.

Guess we'll see but to call them posers is just ignorant!

Btw, that poser of a team came pretty close to beating Centreville in the playoffs.

I believe Centreville was averaging 35 points or more with AJ Turner back. Westfield's defense only gave up 14.

The only other score was opening kickoff, which if you ever saw Westfield's kicker in action was sort of a fluke. That kicker usually puts it out of the back of the end zone.

And if anyone watched that game it was the underclassmen, especially on D, that played the best.

I don't think they'll be a team to sleep on, certainly not one to refer to as "posers"!

Lake Braddock, may have the easiest schedule in all the northern region unless Annandale gives them a fight and Woodson can play like they did in their match up last year, they'll go at worst7-3. Truly unfair while south county scheduled Briar woods, Westfield, and even hayfield will be a shoot out. Lake Braddock will fall in first or second game in post season.

South County has had notoriously easy schedules the past few seasons. This will be good for them if they infact play Westfield and Briar Woods. I'd much rather have a 7-3 season that prepares for a playoff run instead of a cake walk 9 win season and an early exit as has been the case with South County the past couple years.

Still though South County fans can't complain about that schedule, look at the Concorde who will have to pay each other in addition to top Loudoun programs this year.

Take a look at 5A Stone Bridge's schedule with last year's records:

McLean (5-5), 6A, no playoffs
Madison (5-5), 6A, no playoffs
Chantilly (6-6), 6A, 1 playoff win
Westfield (12-2) 6A, 3 playoff wins
West Springfield (9-3) 6A, 1 playoff win
Robinson (6-5) 6A, playoff first round loss
Broad Run (9-4) 5A, 2 playoff wins
Tuscarora (14-1) 5A, 4 playoff wins
Potomac Falls (6-5) 5A, playoff first round loss
Briar Woods (8-4) 5A, 1 playoff win

Not one team with a losing record, 8 playoff teams with a combined 12-8 record in the playoffs. Doesn't get much tougher than that - 3 Conference 5 teams + their own 4 from Conference 14.

Stone Bridge has a definitely has a tough schedule, but a few of the Concorde teams also have some brutal schedules. I think Robinson's is harder, see below

West Springfield (6A) 9-3 1 playoff win
Woodson (6A) 2-8 no playoffs
Lake Braddock (6A) 10-3 2 playoff wins
Oakton (6A) 5-6 playoff loss
Chantilly (6A) 7-5 1 playoff win
Stone Bridge (5A) 10-3 2 playoff wins
Westfield (6A) 12-2 3 playoff wins
Herndon (6A) 5-5 no playoffs
Broad Run (5A) 9-4 2 playoff wins
Centreville (6A) 12-3 4 playoff wins

8 playoff teams, 7 teams that won at least 1 playoff game with a combined 15-8 playoff record. The Rams better buckle up this year. They will be tested.

They lost 18 starters, 6 DI football recruits, along with O'Connor and Love, not to mention the most electrifying player in AJ Turner.

Haddock can bring in whomever he wants, love his transfers each season, he has only 1 legitimate DI football player in Brooks.

Welcome back to earth Centreville, those who know what that team has as far as talent goes this year knows their rein is over.

In 5 years, whites will be a minority in Fairfax. Asians, Indians, Middle Easterners and Latins will dominate.

Asians and Indians will care about good grades.

Middle Easterners will care about good grades and commercial skills.

Latins will want to learn English.

So where does that leave football? Especially when budget problems make it necessary to halt turf upkeep.

I love it when the Cville haters say the lost 18 starters!! You need to check out the videos. Of those so called starters for 15 games...Turner missed 9, Booze missed 6, Tutt missed 3, Love missed 4, Jordan Brooks missed several too....and they never all played together for a game. Yes all those guys will be missed including the other 3 year starters. From what I seen on film, kids that started at sometime during the season, due to injuries, matchups, etc...are , Richbourg(both sides), Newell, Gambone(both sides of the ball), Christian Brooks, Caleb Brooks, Horner, Lee, Simmons, Simpao....The Fact is that Cville did lose a ton of talent and more than likely will not defend its regional championship. It doesn't happen very often to see a team like they have had the last few seasons.

Fairfax lost the most starters to adjust their power ratings down.
They are projected to win 2 games
Langley is returning about 11 starters and is in a better position to win 5 games.
McLean lost more starters than returning and is projected to win 3 games.
Hayfield and Yorktown are the favorites to win the conference.

I am worried about Centreville, 15-0 two years ago, 12-3 one year ago, domination of Northern Region for 3 of last 4 years, I am worried that maybe they will only go about 8-2 this year regular season and only compete for another Northern Region championship with perhaps Westfield, Braddock SOCO, maybe West Springfield. I am worried that they may only be one of the top 4-5 Northern Region programs yet again with a reasonable chance to go all the way. I am worried.....wish I thought only about Marshall or Mt Vernon so I knew exactly what would happen every year and did not have to worry....

Signed, Mr. Worry Wart

If the 2014 Centreville team played the 2015 Centreville team then the 2014 team is favored to win 55% of the time
So the current centreville team is worse but now they will only beat teams by 27 points instead of 30

Does not matter about Cville as this will be the year of the Stallions. SOCO beats Westfield 28-21 in the NR finals. GO SOCO!!!!!!

Does not matter who wins in the North as the cheaters in the South will rig it so they can win the states.....rampant cheating down there, look at what happened to last year's "winner" Ocean Lakes if you do not believe me sucka

No, if 2014 Centreville played 2015 Centreville while healthy, 2014 Centreville would win 100% of the team. 2015 Centreville lost multiple players to college.

That being said, I feel like this is becoming too commonplace with me, but I feel comfortable predicting Westfield and Centreville as the top 2 teams.

Freshmen team was really good last year at SLHS, this years has a few good players I think they are building into a decent team in a year or two its just getting enough kids on . THey need more depth

The LB returning starters are irrelevant because the Spartans have the better team and Braddock knows it.

Can't wait for WSHS first game vs Robinson. We haven't had this much talent in years. The Rams are in trouble. 42-7 WSHS!!!

I don't understand how the VHSL Districts and Conferences work.

Why is the "National District":
Edison (Conf. 13)
Falls Church (Conf. 13)
TJ (Conf. 13)
Marshall (Conf. 13)
Mount Vernon (Conf. 7)
Stuart (Conf. 13)
Wakefield (Conf. 13)

but Mount Vernon is in Conference 7 with teams that comprise the "Patriot District"?
Annandale (Conf.7)
Lake Braddock (Conf. 7)
Lee (Conf. 13)
South County (Conf. 7)
West Potomac (Conf. 7)
West Springfield (Conf. 7)
T.C. Williams (Conf. 7)
Woodson (Conf. 7)

Except for Lee which is in the "Patriot District" but in Conference 13 (with the other National District teams).

What function do Districts serve as opposed to Conferences? If it is 6A vs. 5A why not simply switch Mount Vernon and Lee.

I was on here last winter and said WS qb was the next best qb the region has generated and there were some doubters. With a deep playoff run he'll probably earn a scholarship. The kid is pretty good

Westfields and centreville are still the teams to beat. They have owned the region since LB's run about 5 years ago. LB , SC and WS are probably poised to challenge them this year. However in two games LB couldn't figure out WS defense and the youth on WS offense kept the games close. WS offense maybe explosive this year so it should be interesting. SC usually fizzles out by the time November comes around. Not sure if patriot can keep up with the physical teams and battlefield may not be good enough defensively. It's going to be an exciting fall in the northern region

West Springfield??

They beat who last year???

West Potomac??? They had a new coach and a losing one taking over for another losing one....

Annandale??? they just swim against a current of dissolving talent in their community and I think drowned years ago

Lee??? They were on the last year of a fired coaches run playing with 2 linemen and maybe 3 other players in a game that requires 22.

TC Williams??? They were on their fired coaches last run and boy were they awful

Woodson??? They have been a joke for YEARS and will continue to amuse

W-L ??? A bad team in a bad district who couldn't make the playoffs playing FC, MV, Stuart...etc?? what a joke.. and WS didn't blow them out either...

Edison??? maybe the worst team in a 5 state circle?? please....

Lake Braddock??? They SUCKED in comparison to their last 10 years, the QB was a coaches kid who had tennis elbow or something going on, the OSU recruit was done caring about hs sports, and oh yeah they had NOBODY ELSE as their talent was in 10th grade.

and last I checked LB won the one that mattered....

so if beating all the bad teams you play and losing to all the good teams you play is a great season worthy of mention.... I guess enjoy?

BisonBrawl
Dropped on his head as a baby
Mom left him in a hot car
Molested by his uncle
Cut from every team he tried out for
Probably a redskins fan
The type of loser that will go to a movie to shoot people
Transgender a hole that only posts negative stuff online
Wont post anything about his team because he knows they suck and cant have low expectations of winning.
