so the latest 2 hires (Battlefield, Riverside) were a combined 4-36 at their previous schools? the applicant pool of qualified candidates must be pretty shallow.

Riverside chose a drunk averaging one win a season over Broad Run coach who has averaged 9 wins a year over last 5 years.
No one can win at Freedom, so maybe that guy isn't as bad, but still, Battlefield job wasn't hotly contested? Excellent program.
Riverside? Brand new school in Loudoun. Had to have a lot of applicants. One problem with Riverside, however, is that the school is mostly Indian, dot, not the feathers.
Great debate team, horrible football pool for talent.

Edison is still open... Hearing a current assistant will be taking over.

Just think of how much money could be saved by either eliminating high school football or making it pay for itself…or even throwing off a little extra for FCPS.

So why would you think there would be a lot of applicants for a school with a horrible talent pool? You contradict your own post.

The word on the street is that a former assistant will take over, but keep in mind that only two of them are teachers (Powell, Laguna) with only one of them teaching for FCPS. Hogan and Cliatt would be great HC but their not teachers, Hopefully a decison will be made soon.

Before you spout off, make sure you know what you are talking about. Football is the ONLY sport that is a money maker. The county only pays for transportation to away games, referees and field maintenance. The gate from the games more than covers these expenses and provides significant funding to every other sport. If you want to save money get rid of all the girls sports, everyone of them (except b-ball at a couple of schools) is huge money loser.

Matthie to TC is a great move for the school and the Northern Region as a whole. He will do well there and the kids will benefit from it.

This will hurt Centreville considering they already lost another defensive coach at the end of last season.

I like Matthie to TC. What kind of staff will he take over there? Is he taking Centreville guys?

Pilson to Lee is another good move. We need more young coaches out there so this ole' good boy network can ride off into the sunlight.

Edison is the last one remaining! What other candidates are available? Everrete from Westfield? he has ties to that area. How about a coordinator from hayfield, Lake braddock, etc.

I say cancel all high school sports as they are a drain on the budget. If the County doesn't make some major cuts, you just watch, there will be MAJOR increases in taxes.

Unfortunately for you we live, as they say, IN A SOCIETY. And high school sports are a proud American tradition for well over a 100 years. While your comments have merit they will never ever come close to fulfillment (other than the tax increases which would happen anyway).

In the meantime, you can join the long list of those wanting school to consist of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. No Recess. No Assemblies. No Foreign Languages. No Band. No Orchestra. No Music Instruction. No Science Fairs. No After-School Clubs. No Sports. No Fun. No AP/IB Classes. No School-based Driver's Ed. No Anything-Other-Than-Sitting in a (spartan)-Classroom with a (preferably underpaid)-Teacher with no Smartboard or any modern technology other than a chalkboard.

Now back to football.

Languages, music, science are cheap compared to sports.

Ask yourself this, will football help you in the job market?

The joke will be on your kids when the best they can do is McDonalds after Asian and European companies take over. Sure, school is not as fun there, but they deliver on education.

Been hearing that nonsense since the 1980s. Partly true. Mostly not. Not everyone can be a straight A Ivy Leaguer. My kids played High School football. Went to college. Doing fine. Worry about yourself.

Once again the jackass speaks. There are many studies that show a direct correlation with participation in HS sports and success in life. It took about three seconds to find this article in Forbes http://fortune.com/2014/06/19/high-school-sports-business-cornell-job-market/
- there were many more.

BTW HS athletes also do significantly better in GPA - about a 1/2 point difference in NOVA.

Once again, Biff shows his ignorance. The article contains numerous disclaimers.

Also, if sports are SO valuable, why don't leading schools such as Harvard and Yale place more emphasis on them? There is a whole world of education out there beyond Virginia Tech and 'Bama, you know.

Now that would be a GREAT hire for Edicson. Also, Vaughn has been or still is his Offensive Coordinator, not sure he's still doing it though.

Edison needs to bring in a coach with scructure and stability, the AD should not be allowed to have any say on the hire because he is a complete idiot!!! Who would have ever thought that schools like Lee, Falls Church, and Wakefield would be blowing Edison away in football on a yearly basis? The school has talent, just needs to bring in the right coach.

What makes you think he is a good pick. He has an overall losing record at Stafford and has had two 1-9 seasons in a row.

I admit the recycling of coaches is tired out. If "Working in the school" is his best qualification, I'd stick with recycling. After all the cafeteria workers have the same qualifications. I don't know what his current position is, as you did not state it.

What cost is football to the community? The only money the county pays is transportation and coaches stipends (pennies for the hours put in). If you cut football then you cut all sports. Football tickets sales and concessions are what keeps the other sports running. Sick and tired of hearing about cutting sports for money. That is never the answer.

Don't change start times. Cut back on assistant principals, and support staff who don't do anything. No two years of PE in HS, no school nurse, no career and transition specialists. Don't have curriculum specialist, assessment coaches, and elementary foreign language. Get rid of libraries and librarians in high school( everything is online). Expand vocational programs and academy classes and get rid of bs classes in school. Give alternate paths for students and get more out of the money we do have.

In alphabetical order I think the top four teams in 6A North would be Centreville, Lake Braddock, South County and Westfield. A lot of teams lost a lot of talent so it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. You gotta figure Battlefield, Patriot, Robinson, Chantilly and West Springfield would be in the mix.

Any thoughts on order of finish in each of the four conferences?

In Conference 6 (FKA Liberty), as realigned, I'd say the favorite would have to be Hayfield. Conference 6 includes Hayfield, Fairfax, Langley, Madison, McLean, South Lakes, Washington - Lee, and Yorktown.

I agree with your #1 and your bottom two, though I think there is a slight chance that SL could overtake McLean.

I'd reorder 2 - 6. My main reason is that I think Yorktown and W-L will struggle a bit with their new competition. Aside from moving to a new conference and playing unfamiliar competition, they are playing bigger schools than previously. If you look at their schedule from last year, their 7-3 and 6-4 records were due in part to playing a lot of 5A schools. They will be playing tougher competition this fall.

Madison is returning a lot, especially on the line. They could have a good season. Their lower level teams (JV and Freshman)

I'm not familiar with Langley, but I keep hearing that they are losing a lot. I don't know how true that is.

I think Fairfax could be better next year than people think. They have a deep roster, and their JV team was really dominant down the stretch. You'd have to expect some of that to translate to this year's varsity campaign.

Therefore, my prediction is:

1. Hayfield
2. Madison
3. Yorktown
4. Langley
5. Fairfax
6. W-L
7. McLean
8. South Lakes

Interesting but I was uncertain about the 2-6 also - I was actually leaning toward putting Madison as #1. I was at their game vs Chantilly last year and they looked really good - and they have a decent number returning. Langley appeared to be all Tyler West. Without him I can't see them being anywhere near what they were last year.

I see Conf. 7 like this:

1. South County
2. Lake Braddock
3. West Potomac
4. TC Williams
5. West Springfield
6. Annandale
7. Woodson
8. Mt. Vernon

Who cares? With 18 starters gone from the "dream team" they would need more than 1 significant transfer.

For some silly reason, the VHSL kept the informal "districts" for the next two years. At least the Liberty District and Liberty Conference 6 now have the exact same schools. The new Liberty is actually very similar to the old Great Falls District in the 70s-80s. Or Potomac District [?] in the early 90s.

Mount Vernon is the only area school that gets screwed in the realignment. It will still play old "district" 5A opponents and then completely different 6A schools in the postseason. So unfortunate.

Any idea how SL will be this year? They were young last year and I expect a much better season. Great coaching staff with Taylor and Shannon running the show. Any chance they surprise teams this year and win the conference?

No chance at the conference. Best case scenario is South Lakes probably finishes 6th in their conference.

I agree.

South Lakes Varsity and JV teams were pretty bad last year. Their Freshman team, however, only lost one game. Based on this, I'd expect a few sophomores starting on Varsity. They're probably one year away.

I had them in last place in conference 6. I think that's still the most likely, but there is some small chance they could pass McLean and W-L, but no higher than that.

I don't think that's right about Mt. Vernon. They did get moved up to 6A this year, from 5A. I understand they protested that decision, but to no avail. They got placed in conference 7. As to their schedule, their school's website doesn't have the 2015 schedule posted yet, but I checked on Max Preps, and 7 of their games are listed. The opponents listed so far are Stuart, West Springfield, Annandale, South County, Woodson, Lake Braddock, and West Potomac. I'm sure they have TC Williams, and two other nonconference games. Based on this, it looks like they are playing a full conference schedule.

If they were playing a 5A schedule but participating in the 6A playoffs, I wouldn't be happy if I were a 6A school on the bubble, as they would rack up wins, which gives them points for playoff purposes.

I see from the partial schedules listed that South County has Westfield back on their schedule. That should be a good game.

No this is wrong, they will play all their new conference 7 opponents and then 3 out of conference opponents so at best they will have 3 5A opponents. Besides since they were 0-10 at 5A last year they certainly will be 0-10 at 6A this year.

Have kickoff times changed for the games this fall? Northern Region teams have traditionally kicked off at 7:30, but for this fall, many schools are showing a 7 PM kickoff. I'm wondering if this is up to the individual school, or if policy has changed on this for all schools.

By my count, that's 5 of 8 teams from conference 7 missing the playoffs. Last year, they placed 4 out of 7 (Mt. Vernon joins them this year).

Only one conference 5 (Concorde) team is missing from your predictions-- just like last year. It's hard to disagree with that, and I can't imagine who else would miss the playoffs.

Conference 8 is probably right, though it's possible that only two teams from Conference 8 (PWC) will make it.

I think Conference 6 is the hardest of all to predict. I don't see Madison missing the playoffs.

According to your prediction, everyone who made the playoffs last year makes it except Annandale, which you are swapping for Fairfax.

I recently had a conversation with a gentleman who worked with the Centreville staff as a coach (would rather not say names or coaching positions to keep confidentiality) but what's up with Coach Haddock? I hear things at Centreville are rocky between him and the community.

All good things come to an end and the Centreville ship has sunk. I'm surprised that Haddock hasn't stepped down and took an Admin position.

Old Coach,
Yes, Mt Vernon was 0-10 last year, but it's possible they could win one or two of their non conference games this year , so don't pencil them in for 0-10 so easily.
Stuart is a possibility.

Unfortunately that is a highly unlikely scenario for Edison. Strong squads at both Wakefield and Falls Church these days, and word on the street is a few good out of state transfers into both programs.

Mr. Boyle is the new head coach at Edison. From what I've been able to find out he is the asst. AD at Edison, has never been a head coach and has not coached in the past 3 years. Before that he was a V/JV position coach for a couple of years at Hayfield and/or WestPo? He also has some experience out of state but not sure what level - some say JV while others say V. He fired all of last year's varsity assistants and brought back 35 points per game Deck to run the defense. Could be another tough year for Edison.

Easy, there. I'm not a South Lakes fan, though I don't particularly dislike them, either. I think they have a bright future, but I think they are a year away. Their varsity and JV squads didn't do much last year, but their freshman team had a good season. If those guys stick together, I think they are a year away from making major noise. This year is one year too early for that, IMO.

Traditionally SL hasn't been a very strong program at least not in football (can't speak to other sports). I think that there's a good chance with the right coaching they could be pretty good, there are some good athletes in the Reston area, but I don't know about major noise yet.

SL has a goo team every 3-5 years. In 2002, they won regions but didn't do anything until 2010 when they had Hill. They had an ok year in 2013 but had to play Centreville in the first round. The jump to D6 hasn't been to kind to them.
