Are you trying to solicit the sale of crack cocaine?

is "birthday cake" the secret code words for crack?

I really mean birthday cake, as in the kind you buy
on someone's birthday...

Since I'm new to the area, I don't know any good bakeries
around here. Don't want to get one from a supermarket
bakery...

The only bakery I know around here is Great Harvest Bread Co. I have no idea if they make birthday cakes though.

Victoria's bakery in Fairfax or Amphora's bakery in Vienna. They are by far the best but also the most expensive. Big $$

Heidelberg bakery in Arlington is outstanding - but you'll definitely pay for it. They've also got a great selection of German pastries and an in-house deli.

I bake and decorate cakes as a side-job but when my schedule does not permit me to take on an order I routinely refer people to Costco as an alternative. They DO make a good cake and their buttercream frosting is not your typical greasy mess that tastes like Crisco and confectioner's sugar.

I agree with Yo. Heidelberg is definitely the best.

Victoria's Cakery and Heidelburg are among the area's best. Motzart( German) in the District is also fabulous.

The Swiss Bakery, from my experience, is a series of disappointments from taste to the flies that plague the place.

Costco- large cakes. Taste is mediocre. You need to watch out for ingredients that contain trans fat and Crisco in warehouse bakeries and grocery stores. Nothing wrong with old fashioned butter if you're going to eat cake.

Whole Foods - excellent

Heddenberg - overpriced and crappy.

Safeway? you fucking kidding right?

Might as well get a box of icecream from 7-11

Heddenberg? It's Heidelberg. It's also the king shit. If you are going to criticize a place, you could at least make an attempt at getting the name right.

And as far as "overpriced" goes - the cakes they always have available are in the same price range as those at Whole Foods.

I'm also going to agree as far as Heidelburg is concerned, when I lived in Arlington we used them for every birthday. It will blow your mind.

If you're anywhere near Vienna I reccomend Amphora's. It's pricey like Heidelburg but also worth the money I think.

Cafe Rumi in Ashburn just beyond Wegmans on Waxpool Road is by far Fairfax County's best kept secret. The owner is a french pastry chef and his cakes are served at the finest hotels. THE best cakes I have ever tasted in my life. Worth the drive. The food there is excellent too. We get cakes there for every occasion. The presentations are spectacular too. Here's the web site: caferumi.com It has lots of photos of his creations.

I found cakes at Victoria's Cakery to be oil laden and very heavy. To each his own. But I would highly recommend Cafe Rumi! My favorite is his white chocolate raspberry truffle cake. I challenge you to find a better cake in the NOVA/DC area!

Cafe Rumi is such a deep Fairfax secret, that it's found in Loudoun County.

Brenner's Bakery in Alexandria (used to be in Arlington).
Happy customer since the early 1960s.

There's a place at the Reston Town Center that had some article posted from a local newspaper that said they make the best cakes in the area. I haven't tried them myself.

PastryXpo in Merrifield Town Center has a great selection of birthday cakes. You can go in a week before and totally customize the type of cake you want (type of cake, type of filling, design, layers, size, etc.) They will do any design you want according to your specifications. They are definitely one of the best cakes i have had!

A note about Whole Foods bakery: They take the healthy approach and if that's what you're looking for great, but I've found that the cakes lack the scrumptious factor. However, their cookies have improved greatly and rival Wegman's.
