I liked the Safeway employees for the most part. I hated Safeway since I moved here in 1982. Crappy quality and terrible stocking. Giant isnt much better but Safeway was the worst.

The union cancer finally kills another long-suffering victim.

Simpleton. Think how much better off you'd be today if YOU'D had a union working for you over the years.

Meanwhile, the Albertsons-Safeway merger (which also includes brands such as Vons, Jewel-Osco, Star Market, Carrs, and several others) is mostly a reshuffling and reorganization at the upper levels of management. Store-level impacts are likely to be minor. They want to focus on the usual things -- fresh produce, well-stocked shelvs, and customer service. Scary.

Safeway is much better than Giant.

They are both perfectly good grocery stores. So are H-T, SFW, Wegman's, Aldi, Food Lion, and others. Depending on who and where you are, one may seem to suit your needs better than another. But the differences are actually trivial across more worlds than just your own.

Without disagreeing with your basic point, I'd say that the variation from store to store is mostly larger than the variation across chains. Although the average Wegman's (in my experience) beats the average of any of the other chains (but there are crappy Wegman's too).
