I thought they were usually gone by this time. Maybe they got a late start this year?

Noticed a few in my backyard this week and had the same thought. Maybe because it's been relatively mild lately?

Where did all the Japanese beetles go? The first few years in my house in the late '90's I was filling bag after bag of Bag-a-Bugs every summer. Man did those stink after it rained. Then nothing. I haven't had to buy Bag-a-Bug traps in years.

Where did all the stink bugs go? Their numbers here in the states seem to drop more and more every year. 2009 was horrible, last year snd this year..not so much.
I haven't seen a Japanese beetle since the 90's. Everyone and their brother had those bug bags in their yards. Eventually, some invasive species issues do get under control.

I've seen a few stinkbugs the past couple weeks, but nothing like we had a few years ago. Then again, we never got as bad as some places that were being over run.

This year seems more like last where the main pest is mosquitoes after about 5:00.

The stinkbugs could not handle that insanely brutal winter we endured

Which was bad enough to kill several of my trees, and that's not easy to do. Stinkers seem to have taken it hard but the skeeters seem to be doing okay this year. The japanese beetles don't seem to have been strongly affected (at least not out my way) although they do seem to have dropped off as of late. And I too still have plenty of fireflies. Odd year.

If I had to guess, I'll bet lots of wildlife had it hard this winter. I usually get deer in my yard every night, now once a week at best. No turtles or snakes to speak of either, although I've seen a few on the road so they're around.

I think that hard freeze in early january reaped a mighty harvest.

Definitely seems strange to see fireflies in August. The last winter was unusually cold, so they got a late start perhaps.

Who has best fireflies in Nova?

Well, I don't know how they are in Fairfax but up towards the blue ridge, they're amazing. Up along the Snickersville Pike they're like the stars in the sky, or were a couple of weeks past. Plenty of water and pasture land up that away, must be perfect for them.
