Neighbors from Hell

I need some serious advice on how to deal with ass hole neighbors.

I live in a cul-de-sac in Centreville for the past 15 years and always never had a problem on this scale the type of neighborhood is not getto houses can go for up to $700,000. I am back for the summer from college and I work. On Friday at about 7:30 I was pulling into my cul-de-sac to find it literally being used as a play ground with about 15 to 20 kids out side playing and about 8 parents. Some move out of the road others don’t or just step aside. When I get out and Im about half way to my door I hear hey you you need to slow down we have kids playing not being in the mood I respond to the woman I was not speeding I was going 10 to 15 mph and the speed limit is 25 (which is imposable to do in such a small area.) The husband standup and said hey buddy we have little kids trying to play, I said Im not your buddy or friend and I’v never seen you in my life. I said I don’t care this is a county owned road and I have the right to drive to my own house not your kids play basket ball in the street. My dad and my cool neighbor said they have a feeling something was about to go down they were right. I went into my house and the door bell rings my dad answers and the guy go’s off (this is a different neighbor who lives on the corner) on how he HEARD from other neighbors that I was driving to fast. Me and my dad tell the guy to get of the property he refuses we step out side to reinforce this then the man says to me “are you chicken” “you have a problem with me” I say sir leave now I step back because he looks like we wanted to fight” then my dad goes a gets my other neighbor because he has a felling this guy is tryin to fight me. I step to the edge of my lawn and the guy pursues until my dad and neighbor tell the guy to stop and corner him they stat to dial 911. I run about 100ft into the “play ground” calling 911 on my cell. I tell 911 some crazy neighbor is trying to attack me. They yell he would never do that and call me a liar while on 911. I thought he was calm so I said no to police assistance. The guy starts the chicken shit tryin to fight me again. I go in the house. The adult neighbors were drinkin in the street and the guy that came over was drunk. I left in my car and came back.

Next day

I knew the reason the neighbors were pissed is because my sister got a car and my dad and I moved the basket ball hoop which is in the street to the other side a few days earlier to have a place to park the car. They nazi neighbor moved it back were it was when my sister was gone and my friends and I tried to move it back. The hoop was bought in to by a lot of people including us. We contacted VDOT and they told us it is classified as abandon property and any one can take it. The neighbor directly across from the guy who gave me shit the day before told me not to move it back and he was calling the cops and argued with me and blab blab blab blab blab.

So any way I go to my house, then go into my garage to and see but the two neighbors walking toward my house asking to speak with my dad, I tell them not to step foot on the property like 5 time but they do my dad tells the like 4 times to leave until they finally do leave.

What do we do about the neighbors from hell, the street turned into a playground and the B-Ball hoop?

The days were saterday and sunday not fri

Dividing things into proper sentences and moving to another area where there aren't kids might help.

And next time someone tells you to slow down, ask them how fast their radar clocked you at.

Then learn how to start involving either the cops, as you should have to begin with if you think you are right, or your favorite local blunt instrument.

I asked the neighbor if he was a cop the one that came to the door, that just made him even more pissed.

What blows my mind is they are the same neighbors that call the cops on all my friends or other random people for nothing

First of all, who purchased the basketball hoop? If it was your family and you no longer use it, then get rid of it. Sounds like the hoop is a magnet for the kids.
When they asked you to slow down, I would not have responded. Since you were not speeding, it just seems that they were wrong to say you were. Does your sister ever drive too fast in the cul de sac? If so, they may just have a complaint about her and were taking it out on you. With the dads coming to the door wanting to fight you, you now have a full scale war on your hands. Since you were not speeding and you seem like you and your family want to keep peace on the block, I would write a letter or have a meeting about the poor manners of the neighborhood dads WHEN they are sober not after a day of drinking. Make sure your parents and your sister attend the informal gathering to discuss street safety and let them know the kids need to move out of the way when a car appears on their court. I have a feeling that these parents are gonna be forever "cold" to you but at least they will not be beating you up or threatening you. In the future, avoid any confrontation with them.

I know this will sound ridiculous, but send them a certified letter that states they are to stay off your property. Even though they live next door, send it. They will have to sign for the letter and you will get a receipt. Keep the receipt with a copy of the letter you sent. If they come back onto your property, go to a magistrates office and attempt to get a warrant for trespassing. Try to take a witness with you...

If you see them in the steet drinking, call the police. Its a chump charge, but they can be chargeed with drinking in public. Maybe it will be enough to get the message across.

I don't get all the drama. If someone comes to your door and you don't want them there, just tell them to please leave once. If they refuse, don't go running out into the street yelling at 911, that is just stupid. Take a cordless phone with you to the door. After the first refusal, calmly call the police from right there, explain that you politely asked a person who is repeatedly coming to the door while intoxicated to leave, and that you would like an officer to come over to help difuse the situation. If the person leaves after the call, ask the officer to go speak to the neighbor.

If after this incident you still have problems with the neighbor coming to the door and refusing to leave, call the police again and ask that trespassing charges be filed.

I would also strongly recommend that you place a video camera on a tripod and mount it in an upstairs window facing down into the front yard where you cars are parked, and make sure your front yard is lit by existing outdoor lighting. Sometimes disgruntled neighbors like to get even by damaging property at night, and having video of someone approaching your property will help you get them arrested.

Don't escalate verbally, just make polite requests and call the police if they refuse. By the manner of your writing and responses here you don't seem like a very methodical person, so the above may not work for you.

Easy fix. Make sure there is a witness / neighbor who is in agreement with your side. Let the guy hit you. Call the cops. They will arrest him for assault and battery and trespassing. Then retain an atty. to sue him in civil court after the criminal matters have been resolved. He should learn his lesson.

Take the punches, don't retaliate, take photos, secure witnesses and sue. -§

Next time, just run over some of the kids on the way in to your driveway. A few squashed kids, and the parents'll probably get the hint and shut up. Here's a tip to avoid prosecution: smear some white greasepaint on the front of your car just before you get to your street. Then when the cops show up, tell them it's OK, you only ran over some juggalos. Then show them the paint. The cops'll let you off without even a warning, because in Virginia open season on juggalos is year-round.

You guys are ignoring a very important detail. How old is your sister and how does she look?

  here's an easy fix: make it unsuitable to play there. one idea comes to mind, broken glass on the street. also, i would cut the hoop into parts and have the garbage people get rid of it for you. if there are kids blocking your way when you return home, you can either swear like a sailor or you can blow your horn to no end. there are plenty of things you can do to make them not want to be there and once they are gone, clean up the place. if they return... well... you'll just have to cross that bridge when you get to it. the authorities have no interest in such quarrels, nor do i think it's the proper use of them... well, if you or they are calling the cops all the time. i like the broken glass idea personally.

Here is my 2c for what it is worth - and I have been around long enough to know...

Kids playing in the street is not a lawful act - IF it is indeed a STATE road. At the top of the stop sign at the end of the road, look for a little white sign w/ a route number on it - if YOUR street has one, it is part of the state roadway system and kids - or anyone canot play or otherwise restrict the movment of traffic - That is a POLICE matter.

Re: the basketball hoop - they cannot be in the street or VDOT right-a-way. VDOT owns the land up to and including the sidewalks - if you do not have a sidewalk, chances are they still own ~ 6 ft back from the curb.
If you want the hoop gone and it is in a VDOT right-a-way, call VDOT - they take them like they are trash. That is a VDOT issue.


True story - back in "my day," kids up the street played street hockey across the street, right in the middle of the road that led down to the cul-de-sac.
Dad did not like my "speed" and called the Police. Police dept. came out - maybe 3 or 4 cruisers incl. a Sgt.
Talked to them, talked to me and then went back, telling them not to play in the road again. The Sgt. liked my car - 1968 Charger ;-)

Last time i checked, the streets are made for cars to drive on. Tell your fucked up neighbors to keep the kids in the yard. If you see a little kid in the street....speed up to 25 and plow them!!

you should have dealt with the situation the easy way. after they hadn't left your property second time, run after them with a weapon and deal with them. right in front of their kids..

my suggestion is to just rid the hoop and if needed threaten the parents with the fact that if the kids just do not move that they will be run over. either that or just document (pictures) them blocknig the street, get the parents for negligence.

Kids, shmids. Anyone adult or child who plays, jogs or walks in a street is risking injury. Everyone knows how people drive in Northern Virginia. Only a moron uses the street as a sidewalk or playground.

Yep once its in the hands of VDOT the fight to get it back would be as fast as service at the DMV

VDOT came today the neighbors argued with them and VDOT moved it 6ft into the lawn, the neighbors were clueless and some came home 3 hours early from work. They moved it back to the edge of the street and were out playing B-Ball for like 6 hours.

I thank VDOT will take it away during the next complaint.

Why is it so hard to just be civil and try to work it out? Pride and testosterone leading to calling police and getting government involved on something that mature people should be able to work out civilly.

Kids were playing in the street. Why does that piss you off so much? The guy was wrong to confront you about it; he should have tried to talk to you civilly. But then you escalated it. Then he escalated it. And soon nobody's happy.

You sit down and talk about it like reasonable people. You say you'll slow down, even if you were already going slow, and then everyone's happy and gets what they want.

PS - they're not neighbors from hell. They're concerned about their kids. They may be rude and needlessly confrontational, but let's keep this in perspective, OK?

It's well after rush hour. They should be able to expect to use the cul-de-sac for outside play within reason and far enough from parked cars. If they have little kids in the street, they have a responsibility to supervise them so they don't get in the way of cars. If their kids don't get out of the way, the adults need to go out and clear them out of your way. You both should be able to share the street.

This reminds me of a time I was backing out of my driveway. There was a man with a small child who was riding a Big Wheel coming up the sidewalk across the street. As I pulled out the kid rode her Big Wheel into the street. Her being so low to the ground I could not see her out of my rear window. The man came out and pounded on my trunk and yelled that I was going to run his kid over. I just about lost it. Here he was letting the kid drive out into the street and he was giving me shit. My wife had to grab me from getting out the car.

Fuck sharing the street. The roadway is for cars, not children to play in because they need a hard suface to bounce their obnoxious basketballs around peoples cars. Pedestrians are not allowed to randomly mosey about the streets. This is why we have J-walking laws, and why we install crosswalks at intersections. If one of these basketball bouncing babies gets hit in the future, it should solely be the defiant parents fault for allowing their children to play in a public roadway. The problem here is, it sounds like the OP was white and the ignorant parents were black (and racists). There's your real issue.

There is nothing worse than some little punk back from college driving his car too fast because it makes him feel like hot shit. Is it not common sense BECAUSE they are your CHILDREN.. and I am assuming they are your "world", that you would have to teach them not to run into the street and play it safe.

There are signs that say Children At Play.. but for children its the parents responsibility to get that through their heads. Stupid parenting is what that is.

I realize the thread is ancient, but if the basketball hoop was "bought in to" by homeowners, including the OP, he has no reason to complain about kids using it.

The OP's trespass and parking space gripes sound legit (although by allowing the hoop to remain on that spot he set himself up for this problem).

Hey pissed.....you have every right to be pissed. Your cul-de-sac is a great spot for parents to dump their kids while they get drunk. As the mom of a few kids, I think you are in the right. I would look up what the laws are that govern your situation. I live on a pipestem, at the very end, and I have teenagers! Since my driveway is private property, I cannot stop the kids from blocking. I have taught my kids to slow down and watch for kids. Their friends are another story.

What it ultimately comes down to is the law. OP WAS doing the speed limit. Pedestrians do have the right of way but if kids playing in the street are obstructing traffic, that is a problem. Drunk in public is against the law. Being an asshole should be. Basketball courts in the public street are against the law. Call VDOT and report it. Going onto a neighbor's property and threatening them is not lawful. Call FFxCoPD non emergency or 911 if it gets dangerous.

It's one thing if you play IN the actual cul-de-sac itself, but playing in the middle of the general roadway is stupid as hell. There are these dumbasses near the top of my neighborhood who put a basketball hoop right next to the sidewalk, facing the street. You come into the neighborhood, and it'll even be nearly dark outside at dusk, and their idiot kids are standing right around the curve, smack-dab in the middle of the roadway. I've almost hit them a few times before, and so have others (Despite the fact that I drive below the speed limit). Their family is full of jerks though, and their little girl used to run in front of cars and flick them off, scream at them, and do that "Suck it" crossed arms sign.
