You just admitted to wasting your companies time watching others work. Really stupid, dipshit.

No, my company made it part of our duties to monitor the workman. There was an incident where a large pipe was left unsecured that broke its harness, fell down about 15 feet, and damaged some conduit. All because these union contractors were in a hurry to take their smoke break and didn't secure it properly. They were going to be fired, but the Union jumped in and complained. Even though our company had the electronic records for each of the union contractors when they came back into the building after coming back from their smoke breaks. (About a dozen times in an 8 hour day, and let's not forget lunch breaks on top of that).

That is so mean to say. Some of the employees knew Truland was in trouble but believed in the company. Maybe Karma will come full swing for such a mean spirited comment.

Mr. Truland routinely opened his home to families of his workers. Every year he would host a summer picnic for his employees and their families. He is an honest man and it is a shame that this has happened. If he was in a position to pay his employees for work done up until they closed, he should. Truland is a global company and their wages should be taken from other areas that are still in operation. This whole thing is wrong and something definitely isn't right.

How is that mean? I personally saw Truland workers goofing off, not just once or twice, every-freaking-day!

We should applaud anything, no matter how seemingly painful, that eliminates Union jobs, as it's the corrupt unions that consistently back the leftwing political candidates while moving the USA towards a North Korean-style socialist dictatorship.

Wasting your life watching others work is no way to go thru life.
Ouit acting like a rat and do something productive. Like getting a job.

Looks like because of your union friends, his management made it part of his job. Unions are made up of useless people.

I noticed that all the reviews for the company (Yelp, Yahoo, etc.) have been pulled down. There were 20 negative comments for the location in Reston alone. It must be that outstanding (or should I stay standing around?) customer service.

Probably one the maintenance boys with a pair of channel locks and four/one screwdriver in back pocket. They're already standing around. Hopefully he learned what's positive and negative about electrical work.

a couple thoughts: Truland was in business for over 100 years. In that time it pumped billions of dollars into the local economy, salaries, taxes, charities, and more. It survived multiple market corrections including the great depression. There are lessons to be learned that include not growing too fast, not putting too "many eggs in one basket," keeping greed and ego in check, etc.

It is not fair to blame the union for Trualand's demise, but it is fair to say that the disproportionately high union labor cost puts a strain on company resources, reduces profitability, and is a contributing factor to Truland's lack of liquidity and the outsourcing of millions of jobs from dozens of industries nationwide. While a well founded concept, unions have run their course and continue to negatively impact the manufacturing sector of America.

It is tragic to see a century old company come to pass and all that can be done is hope that the former employees find suitable employment in a short period of time.

As most of you know, we have experienced some unanticipated setbacks in our cash collection efforts. As a result, you may experience a day or two delay in getting your paycheck. But you will get paid. Our cash collections next week appear brighter, so we don’t expect to experience this again. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Thank you.

To All Truland Associates,

As most of you are aware, a number of non-union associates are awaiting payment of wages/salaries that was to be issued on Thursday, July 17. The intent of this message is to apologize for this situation, explain the cause, and let you know what we are doing to keep this from happening again.

First and foremost, I regret that this happened. I see the hard work and dedication that each of you has put forth in spite of very challenging circumstances. You and your families deserve to feel secure in the fact that you will be compensated for the work that you have performed. Every effort is being made to get everyone whole and to keep it from recurring.

Truland’s management and restructuring team work diligently on collections to maximize our receipts. Unfortunately, it is a rare project where payments are current and some owner or general contractor isn’t playing games with our money. This week, there were several large checks promised to us that never came in.

We now have sufficient funds to cover the outstanding wages which were processed today. Based on this schedule, direct deposits to associate accounts should hit Monday July 21.

Cash collections for the coming weeks are projected to be sufficient to cover payroll for the entirety of Truland’s workforce. Additionally, we are pursuing new sources of working capital to offset the singular reliance on collections to fund our operations.

In closing, I wish to thank each and every one of you for your loyalty throughout what has been the most challenging period in Truland’s long history. If it were not for your willingness to stay the course and continue to give 110% regardless of the obstacles, this company would not have been able to withstand the challenges it has.

Rumor had it the company was being sold. As this was going on the owners emptied out the cash. The sale fell through and Truland had no money to pay the bills.

Clark would hand out bonus gifts like carhart jackets, tools and gift cards for monitoring safety. We were literally supposed to watch other people. Our customer encouraged it. I also don't know if you know what its like to be on your feet all day long. But the last thing you want to do is stand around. 1. its boring as hell and time screeches to a halt. 2. You can be fired union or not. 3. It hurts your back and feet just standing there.

And The picnic was for his office workers and friends. Not the MASSIVE amount of workers, who put the work in around the clock, to get the job jone, so he could afford his fancy possessions. Ill tell you that 7 12s aren't all that great. neither are 7 10s. lol

Comments like this are un-necessary. Something tells me you were a part of SDS in college. This subject is about truland going under not how aliens are taking over the world or what you hear on npr. I bet you hope into all the forums and drop this radical neo American crap. Please people. Can we get to the point. Us guys go union because the "private" sector will not pay us healthcare and they don't care about safety nor will they have 401k, profit sharing or on the job training for confined space training, knife safety etc.. The unions protect us workers, because as you say the US or any other place is unjust. Because people are pigs. Im not going to work a physical job, get arthritis and not be able to afford health insurance when I retire. I guess its ok for everyone else to get these things but us construction guys?4

btw how is the aluminum hat working for you?

Yeah and all those non union office workers. You know I went there once for a pickup and I kept seeing the same guys going down for smoke breaks every 15 minutes. Must be nice. But if I could be serious here for a moment. The problem was not with the majority of office workers or majority of union workers. It was the fact that they tied all their money and assets in Utah. While they still had projects over here. They got greedy. They didn't want to be a local company, but branch out. Its really sad. Because now some other company has to come in and finish the job. I don't care about myself as much as I care about the families that needed that paycheck to eat. And what I am angry about is the possibility of not getting paid for my work or having to come in on a sat. to get the work done. But I am mostly distressed about the innocents. If its not bad enough of losing our jobs. Its the people who come on and kick us when were down. Disrespecting our wives. That's un-necessary, that when they divorce us you'll be ready to hook up with them. Do you have a soul? But us unions are obvious scum.

I remember this email. it was sent last week when they delayed our pay. I loved the choice words: "appear" and "expect". Sounded like they didn't even know. great pr. but that was before door closing. so we might not even get paid this week. im crossing my fingers. because I need to eat. Unfortunately the area I grew up in has a cost of living that requires you to make at least 20 dollars an hour so you can have car insurance, pay for gas and eat. I love NOVA but because of a higher cost of living, the union protects us. and gives us a livable wage. the fact that people make 8.50 an hour still in this area. blows my mind. but I guess some people ok with that. as long as it lowers the cost of their frappachino.

Chances are that without unions, their predecessors and political movements that sought to achieve the same ends, you'd be a peasant working in a field or the factory equivalent.

The problem is not union v. non-union. It goes back to the basic human frailties. A person of weak moral character and/or poor work ethic is going to undermine things whether he is running the company, running the union or working for the company. A greedy investor intent on sucking as much money out of a company as possible can kill it off just as effectively as a bunch of greedy workers demanding far more in compensation and benefits than the company can afford to pay.

Another victory for the job-killing Unions! Hooray! How's that union membership (protecting jobs? riiiiiight!) working out for you?

Fact - unions kill businesses. Killing a business does NOT generate jobs. When will libtards ever learn this?

Of all the people bashing unions on here, I have a question? Do any of you personally know any non-union electricians whose opportunity for work has been affected in any way by a Truland electrician.

I am not an electrician (Truland or otherwise). I don't have a strong opinion on the union debate. I am just curious about any direct evidence that shows that the people who lost their jobs this week have done harm to any non-union job seekers by going to work and choosing to do it as a union worker.

If so, then it is a very ssslllooowww way to kill a business, taking decades.

More telling is the following statement from the CEO: "Cash collections for the coming weeks are projected to be sufficient to cover payroll for the entirety of Truland’s workforce. Additionally, we are pursuing new sources of working capital to offset the singular reliance on collections to fund our operations."

Cash collections? What successful business of any size manages their cash flow via "cash collections"? A century of being in business and it's management has never heard of a line of credit?

Evidently this business was either being run by people lacking the business acumen to operate a profitable lemonade stand on a bike path; or people with the scruples of Gordon Geeko.

NOVA-EC nailed it. I resigned fron the Company two years ago after working there for over 20 years... It's very sad.

A serious of bad decisions, allowing the thieves to run the company and the non involvement of the Owner is what killed it.

a couple thoughts: Truland was in business for over 100 years.

Very well said. I couldn't agree more. IT is tragic what the unions have done to our work force and even more tragic that the employers have countered the high cost/low productivity of complacent American Workers with a work force willing to work for far less because they are Illegal or half wadges are still better than what they left. Half the people on any construction project in the metro area are illegal but are willing to work for nothing.

Some of the Truland people will find employment with other electrical contractors but they will have to be willing to take the cut in pay and be competitive in the work place. It will be a real wake up call for them. It's unfortunate and I have watched happen day by day for the last 30 years in the DC area.

Many of the guys will retire through the union and will receive the benefits they have earned over the years. The yong guys will have to go to work for real now and compete with the general work force that many of the employers have created. Some will find employment with other union electrical contractors and will be OK or start their own shops and have to decide how their shops will stay competitive with the non union shops. It's how the world turns.

As for labor unions they need to spit their balls out and go unionize the chinese work force. But then they have to get off their fat asses and work for a living. Guess that won't be happening any time soon.

Rob Truland is still expecting a sizeable check from the government to be paid for the Utah Datacenter project. This is in the 8 figure range.

That bastard better not cash it and hide in the Cayman Island. We must do everything in our power to make sure all the employees that were due a wage are paid.

Don't forget to file a claim with the Department of Labor for unpaid wages. This will also open up an investigation into Truland.

You don't know what the fuck you are talking about. I've been building the greater metro area for 35 years. Hospitals, office buildings, Metro, schools, malls and hotels for some of the biggest developers in the area. Name them and I've built for them. Union labor is and always has been a drain on productivity and efficency. It's caused cost over runs and schedule delays and turned what were fairly strait forward projects into legal battles. Dealing with unions is always a pain in the ass because they make demands that are no longer representitive of the real work place.
The union guys always cause friction with the non union guys which further hampers productivity.
So carry on loacl 26, 208, and 28 listen to Henro and see how long it takes for your precious union to find you another job. As far as local 28 goes there isn't a painter out there work 40+ dollars and hour. Not one!

whether you are on the side of the union or not, petitions filed by the union has forced truland to file for a chapter 7 liquidation not a chapter 11 reorganization. This may be a standard operating procedure for the union, but it left truland no chance for a reorganization.

I really don't see how unions cause cost overruns. It's not like the cost of union labor changes unpredictably. I know what an electrician costs when I bid a job or price a change order; as do my clients. Cost overruns are caused by design issues, indecisive owners, mismanagement of the project by unqualified people on my side (the management side), bad estimates, or mistreatment of employees; pretty much anything other than the field, union or not. If you see a job where the field drags their feet, I guarantee it is because of the management's inability to work with the field; union or not. A manager's responsibility, as well as the foreman's and the labor superintendent's, is to control the variables in the field, and prevent these scenarios in the first place.
As for schedule overruns, all the schedules I've seen dragged out were due to mismanagement of the project above the subcontractor level; either with the owner, CM, or GC (or more likely one or more of the GC's other subs).

I work for a union contractor, but I am not a union employee; and I have to say that I feel pride in the project teams that I work with. I know when I go in to sit with an owner or GC to explain a change order, I can do it with confidence because of the quality and professionalism of my team, and I have never had a client that didn't see the value they have received for the cost. I have never had a field team delay a project; and anyone who blames schedule delays on the field is just looking for a scapegoat, union or otherwise.

The below post is just nonsense. The petition was filed as a result of Truland closing their doors. Here's a question - what odds would Truland have had of restructuring, when now the bonding companies have taken over the projects and have become a ridiculously large creditor to the organization?

Truland owed the union, vendors, creditors, and non-union employees a lot of money. It's not appropriate to say a creditor has caused a company problems because they are going after the debt that is owed to them.

Chapter 7 is and has been the only option since Monday. And anyone close to the situation knows that Chapter 11 is not productive here, considering they have tried every restructuring plan imaginable, and I don't know a creditor that would agree to any recovery plan Truland could present.

Did Mr. Truland write the below post? Sounds like it.

Fuck us? Uh no, fuck you pal. Oh and...how's your Mother?

Do you know why I've never "booted up" and "headed into a dirt hole" or never "topped off a building" or "lit up a stadium"?

BECAUSE I FUCKING CHOSE NOT TO...YOU FUCKING UNIONIST FUCK!

I never booted up because I fucking degreed up and busted my ass to get a proper education. I never headed into a dirt because I thought it was BETTER IDEA to head into a classroom. I never topped off a building because I was too busy topping off my class rank. I never lit up a stadium because I preferred to watch the games get played FROM MY SKYSUITE!

Nobody when they're growing up says..."I want to be a union electrician". You know why? There's no fucking money in it. Nobody ever got rich knocking out 40 years screwing outlets into a wall and running cable. Nobody. That's a job that chooses YOU because all of your true hopes and dreams went down in flames and then you woke up one day and realized if you were going to put food in your belly, a roof over your head and clothes on your back that you'd better get out there and avoid the live wire.

There is money to be made as a union electrician -- eventually. However, in the skilled trades, you start off as an apprentice, work your way up to journeyman, and then master, where the money is. Apprentices do not make the big bucks.

At least, that's the way I remember it...

People are entirely at liberty to have a personal ideological objection to unions and unionism, however in this case the facts simply do not bear out that the union was the root of the company's demise.

In the DC metro area, a commercial/industrial Journey-level electrician will cost the contractor roughly the same regardless of union affiliation or not. Also keep in mind most of the large-scale projects in the area are subject to the Davis-Bacon Act and/or other prevailing wage determinations, further standardizing the cost of skilled labor across the board, whether subcontracts are awarded to union shops or not.

People like NOVA-EC have articulated in great detail how Truland fell apart, but we keep coming back to the Right/Left "talking points".

If you understand how the industry works, the cost of wages is rarely an issue when the project was bid at the appropriate labor rate and the contractor staffs the project with composite crews of various classifications and apprentices. Unproductive or unqualified workers should be reprimanded and summarily terminated (You can do that with the building trades unions, believe it or not).

Beyond that, any problems completing projects within schedule and hitting profit margins are because of mismanagement and issues with engineering, estimation and design. That's not a "blue vs white collar" bias, its simple fact.

I look here for all kinds of topics, but wouldn't it be nice if all the crap was monitored. I don't mean legitimate opinions, regardless of where they fall, just all the crap. It's really too bad.

I've never been on this forum before. It came up on google when I searched Truland and it was nice to see people actually noticed our situation. But I just clicked through the forum and it looks like every thread gets flooded with more meaningless posts than real posts.

Thanks to everyone who posted genuine thoughts. I won't be back here after this post because it looks like anything true or interesting will be buried with bullshit. Good luck to everyone, there WERE actually a few of us who worked this week to make this easier for you all.

All the best,

Nope. It's not going to happen here. The mod/owner/admin of the site founded it on the principal of free speech. It's very difficult to get your content deleted here and...we like it that way.

Don't like how this forum is run? Change the channel. There are many overly-moderated internet forums that cover issues of NOVA. We don't need more of that. What we do need is more forums devoted to supporting free speech. We're willing to shift through the shenanigans (and they happen hourly here) in order to get internet forum gold.

Speaking of changing the channel and "What we need is more sites devoted to free speech".....that I can agree with.

The problem here is the amount of crap/junk that is on every thread. The equivalent of a one hour TV program, that has 3 minutes of content and 57 minutes of ads. Saying you are supporting "Free Speech " is hiding behind a BS curtain...no one is referring to legitimate opposing views, no matter how crude they may be. It is the nonsensical, non-related posts, the off topic crap that is in every thread.

And you are correct, it's about changing the channel, no news there, unfortunately I am not aware of these "overly-moderated internet forums that cover NOVA."

Problem #1 you never work for Clark Construction they get you into bids you cannot
even begin to honor and then they do not pay on a regular basis. They are so busy protecting themselves you sometimes wait 75 to 120 days for a single check and then its always short.

Funny I have been a Union Member for over 30 years here in Richmond and was a happy employee for Truland here and to tell the truth, It was the best company I ever worked for. On a second note, There is no way One Million dollars would bring this company down. Try checking out that big data Center out in Utah. You might find the truth

Nope...wrong again, Sherry. I didn't use one cent of my parents money to get my education. I worked full-time throughout my educational years. Paid in full...now do you have anything else to say or are you just going to stand there and bleed?

Rob Truland has millions upon millions. Just bought a brand new Lamborghini to celebrate shedding the elecrical contracting company started by his grandfather over 100 years ago. Unions killed the company - could not compete with non-union competitors.

You contradict yourself - indicating first that the owner wasted millions, and then attributing blame to the unions. This is nonsense in its finest form. You union basher(s) have no argument if you're going to rely on idiocy; you just continue to make management look stupid.

Rob Truland did not waste millions of his own money. His personal fortune is unaffected by the Truland Corporation situation. Nor did he waste the company's money. Profits were nonexistent and accordingly couldn't roll profits back into company to run a financially efficient operation. This is a labor intensive business and if labor controls profit then can't continue operating.

Why then are there any successful union contractors? How was Truland successful and profitable the first 100 years in business? Several people- obvious insiders, have explained how the company went under. New information is being released on an almost daily basis, and it paints an increasingly puzzling and complicated picture. Truland was a signatory union contractor in the region for decades, they didn't go union last year. Read the previous posts.

I can guarantee you the people on here posting the incredibly elementary assessment "the union killed the company" are in no way involved in commercial/industrial electrical contracting, and have zero experience in dealing with any of the building trades unions in this region.

Unions were formed to protect the workers. How quickly we forget:

The Triangle Shirtwaist Company Fire, 1911
Printer Friendly Version >>>

A majority of the immigrants that landed on America's shores made their way to the tenement sections of the teeming cities of the Northeast. Often illiterate and with a limited knowledge of English, they found jobs wherever they could, often taking the lowest paying and most menial employment. The Triangle Shirtwaist Company located in New York City exemplified the working conditions these new immigrants often encountered.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Company occupied the top three floors of a ten-floor building in the heart of Manhattan's
Bodies of victims liiter the street
March 25, 1911
Garment District. The company employed over 500 women ranging in age from thirteen to twenty-three and mostly Jewish or Italian. The majority labored at sewing machines turning out clothing for which they were paid "by the piece." To encourage the seamstresses to stay at their machines and to inhibit stealing, company management routinely locked the exit doors. The hours were long (9-10 hours per day), the work monotonous, the pay low - in short, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company epitomized the "Sweatshop."

On Saturday March 25, 1911 disaster struck. As the women approached the end of their workday, a small fire started in the cutting room on the eighth floor. It was 4:30 in the afternoon. Within minutes, flames fueled by loose cloth lying in innumerable piles engulfed the area and spread to the floors above. Panic spread with the flames and smoke. The women madly dashed to the exits only to find them locked. They furiously pounded on the doors to no avail. The one fire escape at the rear of the building collapsed, killing many and cutting off that route of escape. Some attempted to slide down the elevator cables only to lose their grip and fall to their deaths. Others, their clothes afire, jumped in groups from the top of the building or from open windows on the lower floors.

Bessie Gabrilowich ran frantically first to the locked main door and then luckily found an open stairway near the freight elevator. Groping her way through the smoke to the street below, she looked up to see many of her co-workers leaping from the windows of the upper stories. Among them was a friend, Dora Wolfovitch, aged 15. Years later Bessie recalled: "Everybody was running to get out. And there was this beautiful little girl, my friend Dora, I remember her face before she jumped." Dora did not survive.

Firemen search for victims
Firefighters arrived quickly but found their way to the building hindered by bodies lying in the street. Their ladders reached only to the sixth floor and their safety nets broke as they tried to catch groups of women jumping from the flaming building.

In less than 30 minutes, the fire had spent itself. In its wake it left 147 dead - the worst factory fire in New York City's history. The tragedy, and the working conditions it revealed, inflamed public opinion leading to reform of working conditions for women and children. It also fueled the union movement adding impetus to the organization of the International Garment Workers' Union.

The owners of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company were tried for manslaughter but acquitted. Three years after the fire, a court ordered the owners to pay $75.00 to each of twenty-three families who had sued for the loss of family members.

D.C. region's largest electrical contractor files for bankruptcy
http://www.wtop.com/149/3668719/DC-regions-largest-electrical-contractor-files-for-bankruptcy

Reston-based electrical contractor Truland Systems Corp., which had been reorganizing in hopes of selling itself to investors in the three months before its abrupt shutdown on Monday, filed for bankruptcy protection Wednesday.

Truland Systems and two of its affiliated companies, Truland Service Corp. and Truland Walker Seal Transportation Inc., filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Alexandria, ending days of speculation and setting the stage for a possible sale to other interested parties. In their filings, the company noted pending bankruptcy cases, including that of its parent company, The Truland Group Inc.

Truland Group is the D.C. region's largest electrical contractor with $371 million in 2012 revenue. Its decision to shut down its operations shocked many in Washington's commercial real estate industry, impacted more than 1,000 employees and dozens of active projects across the region.

According to the filings, Truland's board of directors met on July 22 and voted to take the companies into Chapter 11 and to appoint Tysons Corner law firm Leach Travell Britt PC to represent it in the proceedings. Its vote comes roughly three months after the company retained restructuring firm Protiviti to help reorganize with the intent to sell, as I reported Wednesday based on an interview with a company executive. Leach Travell Partner Stephen Leach, who is representing the companies, could not be immediately reached for comment.

It is telling that the company filed for Chapter 11, setting the stage for a court-regulated reorganization, rather than a Chapter 7 liquidation that would have set the stage for a sell-off and dismantling of its business. The Truland entities that filed for Chapter 11 have not yet filed supporting documents detailing the extent of their finances. In their initial filings, Truland Systems and Truland Walker Seal each listed between $10 million and $50 million in assets and between the same amount in liabilities. Truland Service listed between $1 million and $10 million in assets and between $10 million and $50 million in liabilities.

Wednesday's filing is the latest in a series of events since last Friday, when company officials, having missed making payroll, promised that employees would be paid on Monday. Then, on Sunday, a restructuring expert retained to help sort out the company's finances told top officials to tell their employees not to show up for work the next day because the company was going to be shutting down.

Since then, claims have started to mount against the company, including one by the fund manager for several funds representing Truland union workers that filed an involuntary bankruptcy petitions seeking the company's liquidation. Truland's Chapter 11 filing trumps those petitions.

Forced into liquidation? So if you don't pay your credit card bill, I suppose that's the credit card company's fault too, right?

Obviously, the majority of people on here would rather hear themselves preach than understand what actually happened from the people affected.
