Forest Park graduate drowns in Fredericksburg quarry

Police have identified a Triangle teen who died Monday night swimming at a quarry in Fredericksburg as Anthony Mandel Johnson, Jr.

Johnson graduated from Forest Park High School last month. His death has been ruled an accidental drowning.

It happened about 7:40 p.m. at the abandoned quarry near the Rappahannock River off Wicklow Drive, said city police spokeswoman Natalia Bledsoe.

Johnson was swimming with a group of friends that included three young women ages 15, 17 and 21 years old.

“The victim and one of his friends were swimming toward a rope swing when the victim began struggling in the water,” Bledsoe said in a news release.

The friend and other people at the quarry attempted to save him, but could not.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes. Divers with Fredericksburg police and Stafford County found the victim in the water approximately 45 minutes later.

“As all available life-saving measures were applied, the victim was rushed to Mary Washington Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later,” Bledsoe said.

“Witnesses on the scene are to be commended for their efforts in attempting to rescue the victim,” Bledsoe said.

The old Fredericksburg Quarry is on private property and is posted with no trespassing signs. Despite this, and the “relative difficulty posed in reaching its location,” it’s a popular site for swimming, Bledsoe said.

Police plan to increase patrols around the quarry after Monday night’s incident.

Anthony Johnson Jr. was a 2014 graduate of Forest Park High School.

my daughter went to school with this bright young man and his death is a tragedy. He was a good kid that suffered from an accident ! please let this be a lesson for everyone! there is a reason its dangerous to swim in a quarry as this group of friends found out lets hope this can be avoided in the future by education pass it along to everyone you know. Again how sad for everyone that knew him as he was a well liked man that will be missed condolences to his family

i'm guessing there were TWO signs at the quarry

1) private property keep out or be prosecuted

2) hazardous to swimmers , no swimming

swimmers goofing around die more frequently at quarry than at lakes and beaches if i remember

This is such a tragedy. This wonderful young man happens to be one of my friend's son. He has always been respectful and polite. To the posters leaving negative comments, it would be courteous to refrain and respect a grieving family's loss. My prayers and condolences to the Johnson family.

Teach your Johnson to swim before allowing him to go after all that poontang. Lesson learned.

In my opinion this website is extremely repulsive. So many people just talking trash about one another, having no remorse or proof of the allegations being made. This site is filled with people who have nothing better to do than hurt other from behind a computer screen. Why this should be a website about helping others and passing information around a community not a war zone where people put other people on trial and say horrible things about people. This is no better than cyber bullying except the anonymous names prevent you from having to reveal who they are. This is like a middle school where people do nothing but start rumors about others to hurt people’s feelings.

Actually your point is pointless. If you can't drive a car correctly then you crash. If you can't swim good then you drown, which is what happened here.
