3 questions:

1.Strayer is a tier 5 or have they gotten better rank since the 90's?

2. Was marymount always a tier 3 or is OP making his own ranking?

3. What is this ranking based on, are we talking about for certain majors or what criteria?

You are a close minded person. What college did you attend?

Einstein was spot on. Anyone with a small brain can manipulate the college statistics to achieve a desired outcome. The easiest one is to give added weight to the alumni donation factor in the equation.

What college do I attend right now? Salisbury University. It's miles ahead of the institution I was at.

If my kid's life dream was to be a network engineer or PC support technician, and nothing else, I'd absolutely send him/her to ITT Tech. Harvard would be a total waste of time and money.

Let's be honest. This point is absurd. There are a number of valid reasons why a typical kid might want a trade school over a traditional or non-traditional college. However the chances of a kid with the intelligence, knowledge and experience to get into MIT, Cal Tech or a few other top tech schools is going to fall into a category where a trade school is the better choice is extremely remote. The only situations that might apply would be cost or family obligations. Even then there are likely going to be more affordable schools with strong tech programs that would be available alternatives.

I love the haters banging on JMU. That usually tells you their boss or someone who is telling them what to do went there and they cannot stand it.

OR

They wanted to go so bad and could not get in so now they can hate on it because they ended up at one of the other schools being mentioned.

VT is better for engineering than Uva. Architecture is an investment in unemployment. Law and Med school are not comparable in a discussion about undergrad. try focusing. probably a uva grad who got in on daddy's connections.

They should eliminate economics as a field. There are only three types in the field: Democrats, Republicans, and salespeople for Wall Street firms who pretend to be economists. It's rare to find who hasn't been bought out.

I thought this was some kind of ethnic slur. But there really is -- or at least used to be -- such a place. Sounds like a terrible fraud, and unknowing students were the victims. Of course, the U.S. shouldn't have been issuing visas for people to attend an unaccredited scam school either.

GMU has been "up and coming" for over a decade. At some point you have to arrive, and Mason has failed to do so. Depending on your area of study, you might want to go to Tech, to Mason, to JMU, to VCU, to Richmond, to W&L, etc. However if you are looking to go to a school based solely on general reputation, there are only two in Virginia that matter: the University of Virginia and William & Mary.

Read US News list. It is fairly objective. Outside of engineering Tech sucks. Was called VPI. Can someone post what SAT scores it takes to get into these? That's a pretty objective measure. By that measure you have UVa and W&M at the top, but JMU might be ahead of Tech there, and PLEASE don't give us the SAT you need to study engineering at tech, only a small percent of students what's the overall average?

The average combined SAT score for the math and critical reading subsection of the 2012 freshman class at VT is 1250. The mid-50 percent SAT range is 1160-1340. Although 25 percent of VT students scored below 1160 on the SAT, a score this low makes admission considerably more difficult.

Not sure what JMUs avg combined SAT is. Tech's athletic programs likely drag it down. Lots of thuggery there. JMUs likely less as they are 1 AA.

UVAs athletes have some of the highest SAT scores so they haven't dumbed it down.

UVa and W&M clearly in a class by themselves, and I went to JMU and admit that.

Unless you study engineering or something technical, Tech is below Mason. It's a technical school, everything else there sucks.

what is your purpose for going to college? WM grads are not marketable after 4 years. uva does not turn engineers as good as tech. uva and wm do not offer vet or forestry programs.

Spoken like a true privileged UVA frat douchebag who thinks UVA is all that. "It must be...because it is so hard to get into." Remember, it's a state school inhabited by rich, entitled losers afflicted with serious cases of selection bias.

stop with the class system. they aren't in a higher class. wm is full of relationship challenged smart kids. is that a special class? uva is full of cheaters. jmu is full of blonde, flat ironed, black eyeliner rimmed girls. va is an odd state with the people imposed class/tier system. people from other states think it is weird.

Both UVA and W&M are public ivies and the ONLY ivies in Virginia. There are only 8 widely recognized public ivies and VA has 25% of that them. If you can get into one of these two schools, you'll be hanging with future 1%'ers.

When I was in the USMC, had a boot Lt that was a UVA grad. Real piece of work, ended up getting spanked for being dumb as shit.

Ok...one off. No need to tar an entire school for one example.

Fast forward 10 years...I'm a junior at GMU, working while attending. Had a UVA and VT grad(s) working under me. Dumbest pair I'd ever run into.

The Ivy League schools are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale. There are eight of them and none in Virginia.

It's ridiculous to assign "tiers". The end result is only as good as what you put in to it. They are different schools with different characteristics. For example a lower level class at Virginia Tech might have 100+ students whereas the same class at Radford might have 20 students.

Where you go to law school might make a difference depending on what you want to do, but undergrad not so much.

The entire University of California system was included as one entity. If you were being accurate California has several. Also anyone who thinks that W&M, UVa or UNC are superior to or even on par with non-Ivy Stanford, University of Chicago, Duke, MIT or Cal Tech is suspect.

My son got into Tech and Jmu and can't decide where to go. He likes Tech better but he's majoring in liberal arts- probably something english or history related. Which school is better for these majors? Opinions?

Wrong. The only ones that matter are UVA (top public school) and W&L (top liberal arts college) -- these top-25 caliber schools compete with Vanderbilt, UMich, Cornell and other serious academic institutions while the rest are a way to avoid entering adulthood for four years. The other schools could be shutdown and it wouldn't make much of a difference. Any degree from UMW, VCU, or JMU is probably worth as much as it cost to print the diploma, and don't get me started on Radford and CNU.

Liberal Arts? Why waste your money? If he wants to be a homeless leech on society, he can just vote for Bernie or Hillary tomorrow!

Bill, the fact that you know the names of certain schools doesn't mean you know anything about them. As a graduate of both UVA and an Ivy League institution, and as not infrequent lecturer at places like Duke and Columbia, I can assure you that UVA, W&M, Cal Berkeley, Michigan students are "on par" with Stanford, MIT, Duke, Chicago, even Columbia, Dartmouth, Williams, etc. etc.

The term "Ivy League" has been around for at least 80 years. It refers today to the same eight schools that it did originally -- Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale. One can say that the Ivy League isn't what it once was, or that other schools now compete on an equal academic footing as the Ivies, but they AREN'T Ivies. Just the eight are.

The term "ivy" was introduced into this discussion in reference to "public ivies" - a term that has been around for at least 30 years. It is regularly used in pedagogical circles.

If you plan on having a worthless career, you want a business degree from UVA so you can be pre-pre-med but drop out, do some coke, get some money from mom and dad and eventually a job from your uncle at some local shit business.

If you are an engineer, you go to tech. If you are a research scientist in materials sciences, aerospace, or want to build cool shit as a general life goal, you go to tech, where people actually do things.

Agree that other majors aren't as difficult to get into as the engineering department at tech, but who gives a fuck, its an engineering and sciences college dumb asses. Enjoy middle management, I'd rather invent shit that your bosses boss will pay me 40 million dollars to purchase rights to.
