As a FRD member if someone is smoking in your presence you are supposed to leave. You should never be in the situation where someone is using drugs around you. You don't have to drop a call to the cops on them, but you are not supposed to be there.

Professional Standards monitors this page, let's have them explain the rules so everyone knows.

Why? Pay is better, hours are better and the badge bunnies are more plentiful.

Those other departments don't have the tick problem we do.

Don't disagree the pay is better and the badge bunnies are as well. I was just pointing out that there's no reason to back the Vollies. My point is 1) there are many more of them in the fire service and b) they die more than we do.

Now, what I will say is there are Vollies that have no business doing interior attack or even be on a truck/engine. They are grossly overweight and poorly conditioned for the rigors of the job, other than surround and drown.

They should be held accountable to physical standards that allow them fit for duty. Meaning protect lives and property. I'm in my late 50's and I still could do the job I did in Newark because I never gave up the physical fitness that comes with the fire service. We had a 20 and out so I took it.

On that, I have a problem with the volunteer force. And that's my only issue. Where that shows is you have to rely on your brothers and sisters to cover your back and get you out if you go down. Yes, sisters. One of my best partners was a woman. Pulled me out as I went through a stair case when it collapsed.

Remember, we all die the same. When you lose a brother, you'll never forget it. I certainly don't.

Paid staff uses actual Fire instructors who are career members of the FRD. Volunteers use volunteer instructors who are less than part-time but are paid by the county.
