I agree. This season that is what I have been doing every game. In previous years I have transfered from Metro Center and ridden the 20 second ride to Gallery Place/China Town. But it's much easier and quicker to just walk the few blocks (and its 10 cents cheaper!).
WMATA actually had planned to put an underground tunnel with moving sidewalks between Metro Center and Gallery Place, to encourage people not to transfer trains for that 3-4 block ride. It's been a few years since I heard about that and I'm guessing they don't have the money for it. It totally makes sense though.

Or is there some specific reason or benefit from buying them at CVS?

Take 395

I have Capitals season tix, so I drive there all the time. Take I395 north through Alrington, and into DC. First exit after the river puts you on 12th Street (there's a sign for Verizon Ctr). Take 12th street north and turn right on F Street. Arena is at the intersection of F and 7th. Many parking garages around. I like one at 6th and C, though you have a few blocks to walk from there.
I was at VC last night and had no closure/parking troubles
