Best Indian Food

I've only tried a few places: Ragga in Bailey's Crossroads (lunch buffet, score: 3/10), Minerva in Fairfax City (Friday, dinner, score: 5/10), and Delhi Dhaba in Arlington (Friday dinner, score: 2/10).

Compared to the selection I'm used to (Cambridge, MA),
it's rather weak around here, but my sample size is small.
Where should I try next around here?

I think Minerva is great, that's probably my pick for the best, so I'm not sure if my suggestions would satisfy you... but, Haandi in Falls Church is really good too IMO.

I agree with TheMeeper: Haandi, 1222 West Broad Street, has a good variety and offers a luncheon buffet that is most pleasing with something for everyone.

for dinner we tend to use

reston
http://www.mayurimahal.com/

herndon
http://www.supperclubofindia.com/

haven't tried the buffet at either - its also still more fun to cook your own at home

hint:
if you keep comparing the quality or variety of food here to Cambridge, MA, you'll just keep upsetting yourself

I will try Haandi thoug...

I'm pretty lazy, so I usually go to Preet Palace in Centreville (they even deliver). Has anyone tried Saravana Palace in Fairfax? I believe it is vegetarian, but so are my favorite Indian dishes.

For cooking at home, I suggest The Curry Secret by Kris Dhillon. I believe it is out of print (and the measurements use the English pint/cup). But many Indian cookbooks are more authentic and therefore not like the British influenced Indian food served at most restaurants in the area.

I stumbled across a new buffet style Indian restaurant in Centerville called Rasoi of India, its next door to the Hunter Mill Deli.

http://www.rasoiofindia.com/

It is a real simple looking place, but they serve really good food. Its seems very clean, and the prices are reasonable. 9.95/10.95. The bread is made to order, I just wish some dishes were spicier, more curry maybe?

It saves me the drive to Minerva from West C-ville.

Bombay Bistro (corner of 123 and Main St.) in FFX City is one of the best I have been to.. and I would also agree with Haandi being great as well

It looks like the worker bees from Connaught Place (god rest it's soul) moved over to Raaga. I rather like that place so suprised that you like Minerva better. In fact, I prefer the Minerva in Herndon over the one in Fairfax but both are inferior to Raaga IMO.

Not a buffet but "My Karma" located in the Lorton shopping center is excellent. Its an Indian/Chinese fusion. Top class service and food. They are located directly off the i-95 Lorton road exit.

Another good place I've been to was Harvest of India in Herndon. I thought it was really good actually.

Question: What gives Cambridge, MA an advantage in Indian cuisine compared to here? I've always been impressed with the quality and quantity of indian restaurants in the DC area. There are tons of them around here.

Generally, because of the high student population there's a lot of varied restaurants at most price points (including really good southern bbq). To be honest good Indian is still tricky all over the US - IMHO but that's a personal view

This area has certainly got much better over the last 10 years for Indian food - but its still not great compared to the UK or the bay area. The area is good for afgan etc, although I'd hoped we'd begin to see more African, Caribbean, Cuban, Moroccan etc out here in suburbia

The Chicken Place and Edy's must be one some of my favorite places to eat - so the area still gets bonus points!

We love Punjab Dhaba in Loehman's plaza--not much to look at, but wonderful food (highly recommend the chicken tiki masala, butter chicken, and masala daba). I'm getting hungry. Also we love the eggplant (can't remember the Indian name but it is two words, both begin with "B") and the Okra dishes at Saran Foods in Arlington (near Hildeberg Bakery). Note that Saran is vegetarian, but awesome.

Back when Punjab Dhaba (Loehmann's Plaza) was on my commute home, I would do carry out from there about once a week. I can not remember all of the dishes that I had, but nearly all were chicken (butter chicken was one), and they were all great. I am glad to hear it is holding up.

Bombay Bistro--Rt. 123 and LEE HIGHWAY (not Main St., but maybe now called Fairfax Blvd. in that area)(actually up 123 toward Oakton because a gas station is on the corner) is also quite good in my opinion, and in the opinion of some neighbors of Indian descent who came to this area via the U.K.

Cafe Taj in McLean, on Beverly Rd off Old Dominion is pretty good. It probably isn't the best in the area, but it's relativlely inexpensive and the butter chicken is really good. They also have a good mago lassi.

I've never been to their lunch buffet, but I've seen them setting up the tables towards closing for the next day and looks like it's pretty decent sized.

If you want to pay for some "upscale" indian, there's Bombay Club across from the Oval Room on 16th between H and I st. in DC. The food is good, but definitely more westernized (I think the motif is of a British Officer's club in India or something.

Take A Stand, I think most indian restuarants will be happy to make their food a little spicier for you, if you ask. They probably figure you've had authentic inidan food in their homeland or somethg, and have a little more respect for you for asking.

dickwad. Don't tell my girlfriend about my blow up doll.

6am is the end of the nightshift for nurses at Bles, Gorman, and CCC.

I love waiting until about 7:30, when my best friend comes home and I cook her 5 scrambled eggs, and then we spend the next two hours undressing, taking a shower and then going to bed.

Yeah, I do sometimes do enjoy a little masturbation fantasy with pictures of her, as she does the same with pictures of me.

In fact, I've got about 3 hours before I can pick her up outside the pasqueralla entrance. I might just strip down and wear a bathrobe, and she promised to wear scrubs with no underwear or bra underneath. We might even drive up Macarthur past Sibley, and park on the side of the road and get a little funky.

If I have to, I'll bring a doll into the equation.

No, wait. Neither of us need dolls. We adore each other, and we're going to fuck and suck and have a good time because we actually enjoy sex and we have figured out how to work out our conflicting schedules to make for some awesome sexual adventures.

hey, inkahootz

Ask Tavis about Nestor Cruz.

Nestor was a barback at Sequioa, when Tavis was working there. I guess you were working there at the time, too.

While you and Tavis stayed on at your hourly wage jobs working food service, Nestor got a job working for his cousin at United Press International, making $65.000 a year.

He was an IT guy, who supported us WebDev folks making $85,000 a year.

Now Nestor is making 79,000, and we're all making 95 to 110k a year.

Sadly, you are still sucking your head waiters's dick just to make around 60k.

I never worked there. Like I said in the previous post that you deleted, I worked for a public school system for almost ten years and then resigned. I never worked on the waterfront or in a restaurant or club, ever, period.

Due to your lack of maturation ( and mine as well), and since you continue on with your sophomoric behavior based on untruth and deletion of posts, I have no other recourse:

Try Minerva in Herndon, in the Clock Tower shopping center. Lunch buffet is great, and from the menu is even better for dinner.

Also, I recommend Aarathi in Vienna - on Maple Avenue, across from Beulah Rd.

When I lived here a long time ago, there basically wasn't any
ethnic food to speak of. Now there's all kinds of stuff, and
I can't help but think that in a major metro area like this,
there's some really excellent stuff...if only I knew where it was.

We went to My Karma this evening in Lorton, VA. Delicious food and nice ambiance. One appetizer, one drink (non-alcoholic), two entrees and some naan cost us $43, but it was definitely worth it. We also like Samrat in Landsdowne (Beulah and Telegraph Road).
