Is Empire carpet a rip off? Anybody have any good suggestions?

There's about 3-4 places in Merrifield, I think Bell Carpet is one of the ones I've used. Affordable and labor wasn't a rip at all..

Dont let the installers use your bathroom. I hear they are big fans of upper deckers.

Where's a good place to have a carpet installed? Let's see; I'd suggest installing carpeting on a floor in any room in a home except wall-to-wall carpeting in a kitchen or bathroom. I suppose you could carpet a ceiling if you were building a music studio and needed sound-proofing.
/end smart ass, snide comments.

I think you are trying to convey a question like, "What carpet company/companies would you recommend in the local area? I'd like carpet installed in my home."

When I read that subject, I thought of pretty much the same smart-ass answer -- "on the floor"

Any of the local carpet stores are good. The one in Vienna near Merchant's tire is good, I think it's Custom Carpet -- my parents have used them, and they installed a runner on my stairs about 4 years ago. Clawes Carpet in Twinbrook is also pretty good, I went to high school with the owner's kids (who now run the place.)

I believe all Empire does is contact a local installer and either has the carpet delivered overnight or just uses a local shop's inventory. If that's what they do, you might as well cut out the middle man and the extra cost and just buy direct from a locally owned business.

I had a great experience with B&B Flooring in Springfield. They are located on Alban Street right off 95 South.

It's a small family owned place but they were really good, I had 5 bedrooms done about 6 months ago. Decent prices, fast installation and freindly people.

Quick story....I paid half up front. When the guy came to install, I had left my receipt at work so I wasn't sure how much I owed them. I took a rough guess and promised that if I was short to call me and I would stop by the store to pay the balance. As it turned out, I was $85.00 short. The next day I received a copy of my receipt with a note reading "Paid in Full - enjoy dinner on us"

I thought that was cool.

I've actually had good success with Lowes, of all places. Decent price and they are pretty good about follow-up to make sure the job was done right. Home Depot's service, on the other hand, has been laughable. Not sure if it has changed in recent years, but the few times I tried them back in the day I had to cancel because they just couldn't get their shit together.

Will it match the drapes?

Try Carpet Yard in McLean. (They also have a Merrifield location.) We used them first to install a hardwood floor. Empire gave an estimate of $20k, which they lowered to $10k after supposedly talking to the manager by phone. Home Depot's price was $7,400. Carpet Yard charged $5,700 and they did a very good job. We subsequently used them to carpet our basement. The scary thing about Empire, besides their "rug merchant" tactics, is that they will actually install hardwood the next day. Most people I talked to said that you should leave the wood in the room for a couple of days so that it adjusts to the humidity. Carpet Yard put the wood in the room a couple of days before installation.

Some people say the carpet should match the drapes, I don't see this as a big flaw.

I think this was covered in a previous thread. Evidently, it is more popular with the ladies to remove the carpeting altogether.

Louis Zinzi carpets.

Cheap and family owned (they want to please their customers, rather than rake in the most money).
