They recorded most of their stuff in Arlington, so technically they're NoVA-related

Henry Rollins came out of DC, although Black Flag was not a DC band...

When did this area become a bastion of emo punk and death metal?

Someone in another music thread mentioned BOB, and it seems like they're doing well for themselves. Which is surprising to me, because I thought rap-rock died with Fred Durst...

Most influential - Bad Brains for sure. Henry Rollins and his incarnations to be sure, if he counts.

Other faves, Razz - a pre-knack power pop band gone long before their time.

And I was at a 9353 show years ago and met a girl, we exchanged some kisses and phone numbers. She turned out to be very schizophrenic. Later I saw the lead singer at the old 930 and started a conversation. I told him about the girl and he laughed and said something like "we attract a lot schizophrenics for some reason".

And who could forget the Slickee Boys?

These guys went to Georgetown University together and claim to be a "DC band." Hardly great, but I do like this song. Call it a guilty pleasure...

This is funny. Henry Rollins real name is Henry Lawrence Garfield. Sounds like he came from a pretty ritzy background...

Emmet Swimming got it right with this song.

Arlington

Ivana's a sculptor and she's tending
bar she's piercing her nipples in the name of art.
Rick's an accountant and he likes tattoos.
He keeps them all hidden so his boss approves.
It's the suburb of the week Arlington,
There's beautiful people in the bar tonight.
Not much of a looker, she does all right. He says he's an
outlaw and he always scores. They all have a motto, be rich, dress
poor. It's the suburb of the week. Arlington.
French kiss when we meet. How'd we ever get so chic? Who's your favorite

the suburb of the week. It's just like on TV. Greenwich Village

I listened to "Get In The Van," where he reads from his journal during his Black Flag days. He admits to being a manager at an ice cream parlor or something, and doing well for himself, but giving it all up to travel across the country in a shitty van with his favorite band.

If even half of what he says is true about his touring days back then, it's still pretty awesome to me, even though I've never heard a Black Flag song in my life. I don't even like punk.

Jawbox and Nation of Ulysses are 2 DC bands that deseve a mention, bands from an era when Dischord was actually a relevant record label.

Regarding Rollins, in the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life", Ian Mackaye talks about hanging out with Rollins when they were in high school, somewhere in NW DC, near Friendship Heights, I think. There's also a chapter on Black Flag that has some amusing descriptions of when Rollins joined the band- he was basically some dude rocking out in the audience, and the band thought he was cool so they asked him to join the band.

Henry Rollins, formerly kown as Henry Garfield, attended The Bullis School in Maryland, back when it used to be a military academy. He and Ian worked at the Haagen-Dazs and The Key Theatre in Georgetown (back in the Georgetown Punks days), where they used to do the Little Shop of Horror screenings.

Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings - and I am pretty sure much more is made of that and the ice cream parlor than actually happened.

Henry was the roady for Ian's first band, Teen Idles (Dischord Band #1); Bad Brains use to rehearse in the basement of Nathan Strejcek, lead singer of Idles and later (DC) Youth Brigade, back in those days; it was the Idles that imported "straight edge" from California prior to Minor Threat.

My bad... thanks for the correction. They did the screenings into the early nineties. I know because I went a couple of times. They also used to show it at Fair Oaks.

As far as straightedge goes, The Teen Idles were not straightedge per say, they may lived it, but not preached it. Nor did they did they sing about it, did they? Neither was Minor Threat, but they coined the term and sang about it, so they are credited with it, not The Teen Idles. Youth Brigade was way later. My faovrite straighedge band was Shelter, Verbal Assault, and Earth Crisis.

Also straightedge didn't come from Cali. Ask anyone who was in the scene. What Henry and Ian did bring back from Cali, was the Hardcore/slamming intensity. Everybody was just pogoing around before that. Californis didn't start straightedge, nor did the Idles import. DC created straightedge, cali started the hardcore slamming shit. This is common knowledge.

Yeah. At one point, the other Minor Threat bandmates complained to Mr. holier-than-thou, goody-two-shoes, Ian MacKaye, about the straight-edge attitude. Something to the effect of "Hey, we understand that you don't like drinking, or smoking, or sex out of marriage- BUT MAYBE WE DO!!".

Minor Threat was fucking great, I'm gonna have to crank that up here in a few!

It is Marvin "Gaye."

Let us not nitpick, we are talking musical successes from the DC area. And speaking of success, five time Grammy winner Mary Chapin Carpenter grew up here as a tween and a teen.

Some more people from Virginia (but mostly from Tidewater):

Ella Fitzgerald
Pearl Bailey
Wayne Newton
Roy Clark
Patsy Cline
The Carter Family
Statler Brothers
Dave Matthews Band
Bruce Hornsby
Gary "U.S." Bonds
Lamb of God
Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)
Robert Cray
Chris Brown

already mentioned:
Duke Ellington (DC)
Eva Cassidy
Keeley Smith
Jim Morrison
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Marvin Gaye

some 70s bands:
Starland Vocal Band ("Afternoon Delight")
Peaches & Herb (DC) ("Reunited")

Steely Dan is not from around here, and "My Old School" is
about Annandale On The Hudson (NY), not Annandale, Virginia.

I'm sure there are lots of other (and I'd slap myself in the head for
forgetting them) artists and bands from the area, or who at least
lived here as transients during some formative period, but few major
bands seem to have come from Northern Virginia per se. NoVa is not
really the kind of scene where musicians meet up and incubate bands.
You need a more intimate (and geographically smaller) area for
that. This is not a special area that artists move to because it is
"interesting", and it's not the right kind of college-aged scene for
hooking up, and it's not some historic musical innovation nexus.
More common places are Nashville, New Orleans, Boston, New York City,
various California scenes. I'm sure there's a musicology/sociology
thesis in there for someone who is interested. (You might research at
some place like Berkley in Boston to see who has already done this...)

FYI, Jim Morrison did not live in McLean. He lived in Falls Church for a brief time when he was in elementary school, and then came back to the area (Old Town Alexandria) during his sophomore year until he graduated from high school while his dad was stationed at the Pentagon.

Yeah, I could never figure out why that apartment complex that sits on 7 next to Pimmit Hills was called "The Peachtree of McLean". I thought maybe the 22102 zip code boundary made some odd curve down that way, but looking at a map, it's clearly in Falls Church. Maybe they're trying to secede?
