As far as I can tell most of the above is bullshit. I got Lyme a couple months back and just went through the treatment. You can go to the CDCs website and what I tell you now is what they have as the course of treatment.
Unless you have an allergy you will do 100 mg of doxycycline twice a day for 3 weeks and then they test for antibodies. If it comes back dirty you do 3 more weeks. If that comes back dirty you sit on your hands for 3 months praying it doesnt come back because in the immortal words of Rooster Cogburn.."I can do nothing for you son."
Extending antibiotic treatment beyond the above has not proven effective.
The doxy is a bit of a pain because you have restrictions on when you can and cant eat in relation to when you take it.
They watch more for symptoms than rely on tests. In my case I had the flu like stuff and then the classic "bulls eye" rash.
The only thing my doc,who is an ID guy and internist asked about was joint pain, if I get it, I need to come back STAT.
Most people the ABs dont work on have weak immune systems like the real young or old.
Something like 20% dont get the rash and thus arent treated, those are the ones who you tend to read about on the Internet that have weird lingering symptoms that pop up down the road. The virus goes to ground and then comes back and among other things wreaks havoc on joints.

Good luck,it sucks I know.
One last thing, find out who your doc uses for the test. I will save the long story but I had my first done at Sunrise Medical Labs(I am a pay as you go patient). I thought my tests were covered in my doctors bill...I got a nasty surprise when I got a crazy bill from Qwest, it was 150% MORE than my previous tests. The tech said she had worked at both Qwest and LabCorp and they rape you. Dont take my word for it call and compare. Maybe it doesnt matter under your insurance but if it does check
