What are your favorite delicatessens in the area?

Celebrity Deli in Loehmans Plaza has been cited by a number
of people as a good place. The most recent things I ate
there were the "Milty" (hot pastrami and provolone) and
the "Goldberg" (pastrami and corned beef Reuben-like)
and their Reuben. And the chicken matzoball soup.
All very yummy!

The other place I've tried is the Chutzpah.
I had the “Fuggedaboudit”: a sort of super-Reuben of
hot corned beef and pastrami with chopped liver and swiss,
cloe slaw and Russian dressing. With some soup, and proper
pickles...it took me two meals to polish that off.
The best so far.

When I was a little kid in Annandale I used to go to the place
above the basement indoor shooting range on Columbia Pike, sort
of in front of Dawson's Gun Store. I didn't know "real" deli
food back then, not having spent time in NYC, but they introduced
me to pastrami. It was on a roll with pickles, slaw, swiss, and
mayonaise (!) called "The New Yorker". Probably their best thing
was "The Farmer", which I think was chicken, ham, swiss, and blue
cheese melted on a small roll. They later sold the place to some
people who didn't know how to make any of those things, and I think
the original may have been relocated in Vienna for a while, but that
was after I left the area.

My favorite New York place is The Carnegie. Some people think
it's a tourist trap, but when I go there I just see a busy place
of mostly locals. Occasionally someone famous drops in, usually
for take-out. I've been known to take road trips from Boston
(about 4.5 hours each way) to get take out, or rent a plane and
fly a few friends to dinner. The meats in the delis here in
Fairfax (or most cities in the country) are not as good as the
stuff in New York, for some amazing reason.

Most egg-creams anywhere are not as good as the ones I make myself.
You must have U-Bet and good fizzy seltzer to do it.

Spuntino's Deli in Burke Towne Plaza used to be the BEST! It closed years ago but my husband and I still remain hopeful that it will reopen somewhere, sometime. I think the owner's name was Yannis.

A place called Bernie's Deli just opened in Fairfax City (123 & School St) that makes a pretty good sammich.

The guy (and his family) that owns Bernie's allegedly operated Wagshal's Deli in DC since 1925.

Does anyone remember the deli/pizza place that was in the Culmore shopping center in the late 60's-'70's. There used to be a post office in the same center (maybe still there) haven't been by there in awhile. Anyway, that deli always had good italian subs.

There's a good Deli across from GMU, in the shopping center off Braddock, facing GMU. Sorry I forgot the name.

That'd be Elie's Deli, the quality of which far exceeds anything available on campus. Bernie's is great as well (I think it used to be the courthouse deli, no?)

Not really a deli, esp. if you are looking for a really good Italian sub or Rueben, but Harris Teeter has the best deal for sandwiches/"subs." It beats Subway and Quizno for size and taste, everyday something is half price and on Friday's everything is half price, running around $2.50. Meatball subs on their cheese bread is the BEST.

Has anyone from FXUG tried the Pica Deli located in Reston? The food is very good and the employees there are very friendly.

I worked in Reston years ago and frequently got food from Pica Deli. They used to have this turkey pita sandwich with poppy seed dressing- it was excellent! I thought I heard the place closed down, it's good to hear it's still open. Quality food, I recommend it.

PicDeli is indeed still open, they use boars head meats, which is top notch. Only open for lunch M-F till 3pm. Little hard to find, its in the strip plaza next to Exxon / Popeyes off Sunrise Valley.

Chutzpah is the closest thing to a Manhattan deli hands down.

"That'd be Elie's Deli, the quality of which far exceeds anything available on campus. "

I went in there about two weeks ago. Looks like it's been bought out by some Asian people. I don't even know if it's still called "Elie's"; I thought the sign over the door said "Best Deli" or something like that.

Anyway, the meatball sub I got was really bad; the meatballs were kind of rubbery and tasteless.

I don't know whether they were just having an off-day or what, but I'm probably not going back.

Ed's deli in Bayport, NY. Best Roast beef on rye you'll ever eat. Fairfax deli's suck balls.

The New York Deli's are good. The best Deli in FFX is herndon. It's an old style Italian deli. It's in the Kmart shopping center at the back of the lot, Just says "Deli."

I've always found that the best deli's have all sorts of Italian stuff for sale. Like stuff in bottled oils, meats and Italian candy.

I second Lurker's reccomendation. The Deli in Herndon makes what I consider to be the second-best Italian subs in NoVA. I haven't been there in years, but if I recall correctly, the sub they call "The Deli" is the real good one, with the mortadella and real italian hams. It is excellent. The only place that does subs better is The Italian Store in Arlington.
