This is just another way to show how inhospitable the county is to new immigrants by taking away one of their local gathering places. What next? Bulldoze Culmore?

Yeah that place is in serious need of renovation. The only good thing about it right now is their "spend $250 and get a $25 gift card". Buy stuff for >$250; ask for 2nd copy of receipt(s); get $25 gc for first receipt(s); return item(s); get $25 gc for second receipt(s) one week later. Profit = $50/week. Pretty sweet deal, even if the mall is nasty.

Yep, it includes all the stores physically part of the mall (inc. Macy, Sports Authority, Target, etc) and Men's Wearhouse which is a separate building but in the same lot. Home Depot and Best Buy do not count though, since they're across the street.

No way in hell on earth am I going near that mall until the redevelopment is complete. I'll buy my clothes elsewhere or on line. That place is too dangerous for a woman shopping alone. Just this past weekend a woman was kidnapped at the mall and killed! Read the story in today's Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/14/AR2008091400009.html

In my opinion, the mall is partially to blame for her death for failing to provide a safe environment for that poor woman to shop. Bet her family sues the mall.

Why not kill two birds with one stone - Fairfax County can adopt a revenue sharing agreement with Vornado and build a jail/prison facility adjacent to the new mall - the logistics would be perfect due to the concentration of criminals within the immediate area, and it would spare the nanny-states of DC and PG,Montgomery and Arlington counties the guilt they feel for having to prosecute the criminals involved.

Damn....kidnapped, then killed while the scum were trying to get away from the cops! I occasionally go to Springfield Mall, but only during daylight hours. Now I see that even daylight doesnt deter crime. That could have been you or me. I will never go there again, thats for sure. Other shoppers even realized there was something wrong and called the cops. That was very clever, although it still had a tragic ending. So sad.

They need to close down that cesspool NOW!

There was no mall cop (pussy is too scared to work by himself) that day and even then there is only one of them on weekends. mall security is a joke and sells weed on the side. Fairfax county WILL turn into PG county at the rate its going. Too liberal, too few real cops.

And what investors are stupid enough to put up the kind of money needed to build and operate that, knowing what the surrounding community has become (violent illegals and lots of criminals in Section 8 housing)?

Whoever they are, they deserve to have their hats handed to them for their financial idiocy.

Springfield Mall needs to be remade as a parking lot.

The crime problem, although down, comes from the fact the mall as a ton of escape routes. It is a perfect place to commit a crime. A couple of turns and one easily disappears into the NOVA ether.

Inner or Outher Loop, 395, 95, FFX PKY, Old Keen, Franconia Rd…even the Metro.

Re: Bye Bye Sprinfield Mall
Posted by: Bill ()
Date: September 23, 2008 02:36PM

Hmmm... I seem to remember the mall having just as many exit routes (less the Metro) 10 or 15 years ago, and crime there was almost non-existant.

It's the people who moved into the area that created the crime, not the floor plan.

All I've seen is talk about some vague Hispanic threat, as opposed to actual facts/figures about crime rates in FFX.

Is crime higher, lower, or the same in FFX as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago?

Our memories tend to forget the bad stuff for the most part -- studies have been done showing most people regard their 16-25 year old time as 'the best.'

Now, with stats:
http://www.disastercenter.com/virginia/crime/13791.htm

While crime has gone up some, it's nowhere near as bad as it was in the 1980s and early 1990s.

-- The question is not in FFX overall but Springfield. The surge in crime there has happened over the last ~7 years if you choose to research those statistics. And MS13 was not in the area then, so that "vague Hispanic threat" is new too. Some recent examples, none of them vague, especially to the grieving families:

Bill, I'm sure the victims of (higher rates of) crime in the 1990s were grieving just as much as the victims of crime in the examples you cite. Of course, the victims of crime today are ill consoled by the fact that crime rates are much lower now than in 1995.

Or do Hispanics commit special types of the same crime that are worse? Are Hispanic-committed crimes not counted in the stats I cite (which are the #'s the various jurisdictions report to the FBI)?

If you have any stats for the Springfield area of FFX specifically, I'd be glad to look at them. I don't doubt this could be the case, that Springfield has gotten worse while other areas have gotten better. In that case, what areas have improved since the late 1990s?

One data point I *do* have is Herndon, another town that's supposedly gone down the tubes in the past 10 years. It has lower crime now than in 2003.

Another alternative would be a rash of people not reporting crimes, but this is by definition impossible to measure.

Again, while crime in FFX has increased overall since 2000, the total number of crimes is still 60% of what it was in 1995, while Fairfax's population has increased 15% since then. There really was no halcyon time for public safety in Fairfax except maybe before 1960 or during Clinton's second term.

I don't know what the numbers are, but Fairfax County
seemed a lot safer back in the 1960s up into the 1970s.
I don't know if the rate has changed, but your chance of
encountering danger is not related only to the rate, but
also to the density. There is always crime, but when I
was growing up in Annandale in the 60s, we would always
leave our house doors unlocked, and you didn't need to
lock your car when you went into the grocery store.
And there were absolutely zero carjackings or machette attacks.

Re: Bye Bye Sprinfield Mall

Bill, there are fewer reported crimes in Fairfax County today than in 1995. This is a simple fact.

You can argue that (1) there's more unreported crime, (2) the crime is either more concentrated in formerly good neighborhoods such as Springfield, or (3) the crime is more widespread now than in 1995, so more people are generally uneasy, whereas in 1995 the crime-ridden areas were clearly marked and were known to be avoided. It seems you're arguing (2), in which case there's some neighborhoods with even less crime to live in.

Spacy, my numbers only go back to 1980, which was a pretty dismal time for America, what with Jimmy Carter lecturing that wanting a good life was somehow bad and our international reputation at (then) lows. Your recollections of life in the 1960s may well be correct, or it may be colored by the rose-colored glasses of time.

Either that, or the halcyon Fairfax of which you speak was available only to White, middle class and higher residents. Negroes and the poor need not have applied. (I'd recommend reading The Way We Never Were.)

Re: Bye Bye Sprinfield Mall

I don't know why you're arguing about crime and race there. If it was just a lot of white people, there wouldn't be any crime, face it. Immigrants from other cultures come here and think they're anonymous and can do whatever they want, and if they can't, we're racist.

Re: Bye Bye Sprinfield Mall

Bacon, I suspect the low(er) crime of areas like Japan, the Dakotas, and West VA are a result of cultural homogenity.

Of course, that has a price -- suspicion of the outsider.

Is it irreversible human nature to be clannish and suspicious of outsiders? Perhaps.

Our 50-year experiment with multiculturalism has had some successes and some failures. It is, however, better than the alternative, which would be reverting to 10,000 years of form and being suspicious of The Other. Likewise with our 150-year experiment with social democracy.

Springfield Towncenter:

Details from thier webiste that is now online:

Overview
The proposed Springfield Town Center development will replace the existing Mall with an urban, pedestrian-friendly environment that will be a magnet in which people can live, work and play. Upon its completion, Springfield Town Center will be a true metropolitan community with a reinvigorated regional shopping center, new Class A offices, a hotel, and urban-style retail, as well as an integrated residential component, all of which will extend the life and activity beyond traditional mall hours by attracting a variety of new patrons. One of the first steps in this proposed redevelopment will be a complete transformation of the Mall to rejuvenate the existing interior retail areas. A new internal layout will reduce and realign the confusing corridors and consolidate the two movie theaters and disjointed food options into one more unified design.

Timing
The development of the Springfield Town Center is a multi-year, multi-phase project that will reinvigorate a tired, isolated shopping mall. Renovation work on the mall is expected to begin in the spring of 2009 with a fall 2010 opening.

The office buildings and residences are part of the longer-term development plan, which will take between 10 and 15-plus years.

Size
Today, the Mall measures about 1.8 million square feet. Approximately 175,000 square feet of new retail space is proposed, bringing the Mall’s total to 2 million square feet. A hotel and approximately 2,200 homes also are included in the redevelopment, as well as +/-1.1 million square feet of new office.

Re: Bye Bye Springfield Mall

Springfield mall and the entire area all need to be torn down and remade into government offices, and then all that shit that's going up by 395/Seminary Road needs to go there instead. Put up blast walls and make the outer parts parking lots if you're worried about security.

This way people can take the metro and walk to work and we don't get 395 jacked up.

"replace the existing Mall with an urban, pedestrian-friendly environment "

"reinvigorated regional shopping center, new Class A offices, a hotel, and urban-style retail"

Two "urbans" in a short paragraph. I take that to mean "don't be surprised that the crime rate is high - we're urban!"

I was in a wedding last Oct at the Waterford in Springfield. We (wedding party) were staying at the Springfield Hilton, and most of the Bride/Grooms family was from the Northeast. While we were all congregating in the lobby of the Hilton, a man ran in through the front doors and was trying to hide. The police swarmed the hotel looking for him- turns out he was responsible for a stabbing that had just occured over at the mall. Highly doubtful that the out of towners will ever return.
